First Ever Battle of the Unis

Waikato-1 University Blue Devils-11

On Sunday, the University-based Waikato Lacrosse Club played its third game of the season against the University Blue Devils (UBD) in the first ever inter-university lacrosse battle. The UBD started well by pressing home the advantage from their mobile midfield, but as Eric the goalie and the defence increased their communication, Waikato’s defensive slides began to limit the chances the UBD had. Waikato’s offence again created plenty of chances but could not capitalise on several fast breaks. Cam, Morgan and Jared worked tirelessly all afternoon at attack and during the occasional midfield run. One part of Waikato’s game that was working well after training on Thursday was the clear; at times they cleared like a team who had been playing for a lot longer (than just a few weeks!). As the game continued, UBD had to work harder for their goals; defensemen Josh , Spanky and Luke all proved solid, once more, knocking both balls and men to the floor (uh, lacrosse balls, that is). By this time, as you might expect with one sub, Waikato was beginning to tire, but kept fighting. Middies Dave, Sid and Sturky, having pretty much ran to Hamilton City and back, kept going and worked hard on defence. The last quarter was probably the best that Waikato have played this season, the authors think the score for the last quarter was 1-1 a credit to the effort of both teams. Thanks to the Blue Devils for the game and to the referees. Bring on the Wildcats next week!

Waikato Downed by Titans

In last week’s game against the Titans, Waikato lost 11-0 but saw a lot of positives from their defence and plenty of hard work on ground balls from all of the players.

Waikato Enters the NZ Lacrosse League

Waikato began its season with a default victory over the now-show Ardmore Marist side.

Marist short of players, played the game with make up players from other league teams but in doing so defaulted the match 5-0 to Waikato.
