The Girls Of Summer Are Back And Better
06 Teamwork 8U
Union Township, IN- It’s almost April and the sun is showing its warm face a little more frequently and a little longer these days. There is still a little bite in the air, but today looks like a terrific day for a ball game. Soon, the girls will be practicing outside with their teams if they haven’t already been doing so. Then, the uniforms will arrive to either squeals of delight, or the groaning of disapproval. Either way, they will be worn with pride. Soon after that, the teams will be on the field and ready for action. The first pitch will be thrown sooner than we think, and not soon enough.

On the ride home these days, I see more and more girls in the yard with their Moms and Dads playing catch, working on the wind up, or taking some BP. Sure, there are some broken windows in their future, but they are the future faces of Northwest Indiana softball. Practice makes you better. The best players know that. They are the best players because they practice. Very few physical limitations cannot be overcome with a steady diet of practice. I’ve been fortunate to have been taught on occasion by a terrific softball coach, Gil Arzola who once told us at a clinic; “Softball is a very democratic sport.” It is truly for everybody. Everybody can play it. Everybody can play it well if they make the effort. There is no substitute for practice, especially the practice of sound fundamentals.

So, when I see these young enthusiastic kids in the front yard playing ball, I get a sense of joy and pride. Pride, because I have been associated for a number of years with the people of the local softball organizations that created this enthusiasm and I am proud of them for making it all happen. I get real joy from seeing a kid practicing a sport that I’ve loved for a lifetime, and I am confident they will too. It is a slice of Americana. It’s Rockwellian at its finest, right out of the Saturday Evening Post. And, it’s all happening right here in the 21st century. We should all take a deep breath and enjoy it right now.

Soon, I’ll see you around the ballpark again…

UGSI Is In The Air- Online
WHS Spring Training

Wheeler HS Hopefuls

St. John, IN- The organization that Mary built has now taken its inevitable first step into cyberspace. By carving out this piece of online real estate, the organization will be able to make numerous amounts of information conveniently available to its members and associates around the area. It's not revolutionary, its just timely and incredibly useful in the dispensing of news and information about recreational girls softball in NW Indiana. This new site www.nwisoftball.com is the new home of information, news, and photos about UGSI events from around the area. Also in the plan, is to offer some news and photos about Girls High School Softball as well. This will lead us right up to and even overlap the UGSI seasons by a couple of weeks. The high school news is relevant because most of the girls competing in the IHSAA got started in UGSI leagues. The current UGSI recruits will find themselves competing against each other at the high school level eventually. UGSI is the foundation for all girls fastpitch in NW Indiana and the success of these high school teams owe them a debt of gratitude for supplying the building blocks and the interest at a very early age. The best high school coaches keep a sound relationship with the rec leagues.

Stay tuned for more news and information as we go. Being that this is the off-season, and this site is just launched I am not sure how often the site will offer fresh information. But, I assure you that this site will be very active and dynamic very soon. So, stay tuned, because you never know what you are going to find.

If you have information that you would like to share or would like me to report, please send it to me at brian@nwisoftball.com. Photos are also welcome. I am especially interested in reports on the high school teams right now. If you can have your local high school coach send me some information about your high school team, I would be happy to post it. Who are the brightest prospects, etc. E-mail me some scoop- Click Here

I look forward to reporting to you on this site. Remember, this has been made possible and brought to you by Mark Levin and Linda Henrickson and the rest of UGSI organization. I thank them for joining me in this effort, and I know it will be a blast.

I'll see you around the ballparks of NWI...

UGSI 2007-2008 Mission Update
Red Hat
UGSI Update 1/20/07

The UGSI Executive Board is trying to enhance the level of play for the recreational players in the Northwest Indiana region. We were founded over 40 years ago as a not for profit organization, for the purpose of providing a place for these young ladies to meet new friends, learn the game and provide parity in tournament play. We are responsible and dedicated to upholding the mission that Mary Connor and her team established for Untied Girls Softball.

The Executive Board of 2007-2008 has refocused our efforts to give the players, leagues and umpires more for less.
We, as a not for profit organization are interested in providing: additional tournaments, parity of play, supporting league affiliates and ensuring a safe environment of play.

Our business plan goals include:
1. New rules
2. All inclusive league/umpire Insurance coverage
3. Establish annual membership fee
4. Umpire training program at a reduced cost
5. League Umpire/UIC support
6. More awards for ALL Players

The Not-So Off Season Bustles

UGSI 1st VP Mark Levin provides us with an update on the 2007 season...

UGSI MEMBERSHIP
We have 7 leagues that have become 2007 members to date and we thank you for your continued support !

We still have a few leagues that have not sent in their 2007 membership fees. This is a reminder that 3/1/07 is the cutoff for membership's, where you would be eligible to request to host a 2007 tournament.
If you choose to not host a tournament and want to join to be eligible to play in the MC Classic and UGSI events,
you may still join after 3/1/07.

We want to finalize our tournament host selections before 3/15/07.

So if your interested please indicate on the attached spreadsheet with your 1st and 2nd choices for either of the MC Classic weekends in June or the UGSI All Stars in July. Please forward a check for $ 100.00 and your selections to Shirley Mudy 14209 Wicker Ave, Cedar Lake Indiana 46303.

UMPIRE CLINIC

Additionally, we have only received a few registrations to date for the March Umpire Clinic's. Please visit the UGSI website at : NWISoftball.com for the registration flier and more information.
Dates 3/17-18   Cedar Lake (Registration cutoff 3/12)
Dates 3/24-35   Hobart (Registration cutoff 3/17).

RULES COMMITTTEE

We want to thank all of you who participated in the Rules Committee meeting's and teaming together to formulate our 2007 Rules. This is a great example of how organizations grow and become more efficient. We will have an Executive Board Meeting to review your recommendations for the MC CLassic, UGSI and General Rules next week. It is the Rules Commissioner's wish to publish these in whole by the 15th of March. We will start by sending these to the NWISoftball.com website and follow with distribution to our members. Again thank you for your efforts, for you truly make a difference!

Insurance

We are close to having a great source for you to consider for your League and Umpire insurance needs. Dave Budzielek from Budd Insurance has been working diligently to find the very best coverage for a great price and in terms that everyone can understand. I have spoken with him several times and met with him last Friday to provide more information for the last steps of building an all inclusive policy for UGSI and it's members. Dave is very excited on how this policy will read and the coverage that it will provide. Thank you Dave for your efforts in trying to possible save money for the leagues and to provide a FULL COVERAGE alternative.

If you have any questions, comments or concerns please let me know.
