Northwest Austin Pop Warner Longhorns: History

Our History So Far ...

Northwest Austin
Pop Warner was founded in the spring of 1991 in direct response for an organization to assume the Williamson County Pop Warner franchise that had been vacated by the Town and Country Optimist Club. The group's objective was to offer organized football and cheerleading to the youth in the Northwest Austin Highway 183 corridor. Dwayne Toomey was elected as our first President.

Northwest Austin's colors were black and white and games were played at Grisham Middle School
. The team's mascots were the Braves and the Tomahawks, and teams were fielded in the Junior Midget and Peewee divisions in both football and cheerleading.

In 1993, due in part to the efforts of President Ron Doss, the organization changed their name to the Longhorns and adopted the
Orange and White colors. In 1993, we added a Junior Peewee team to the program. An equipment rental program was initiated and today we outfit up to 130 football players. Also at this time our Home games were moved to Canyon Vista Middle School
.

In 1994 the organization added its first Flag team, and our Home field was moved to the present site,
Deerpark Middle School
.

1996 saw the addition of an additional Flag and Junior PeeWee team. In 1998 a tackle Mitey Mite program was started.

Northwest Austin
Pop Warner has evolved from 40 football players and 20 cheerleaders in 1991 to its present day numbers of 120 and 80, respectively. All of our teams, at one time or another, have participated in local and statewide playoffs and placed in cheer competitions.

Like many other youth associations, we receive no public funding. Our registration fees and fundraising money goes directly back into the program, purchasing equipment, renting our Home and practice fields, paying for referees, and providing trophies and medals for the kids.

Each and every President and Board of Directors has made an honest effort to provide the youth and adult participants with the best experience possible and ensure that our league is operated fairly and with integrity. These volunteers have worked hard to maintain a sense of teamwork and community spirit in the
Northwest Austin
area.

Northwest Austin is a steady and active influence in the Central Texas
Pop Warner Association, striving to impart the same principles that we as an organization uphold.

We believe in our kids and continue to be blessed with dedicated players, parents, and volunteers who make the future of
Northwest Austin
Pop Warner Football and Cheerleading very bright.
