WHALLEY MOURNS AGAIN

The article below is from the Surrey Now newspaper

Whalley grieves coach's passing

Club fixture Joe Burns gone at 47

Michael Booth, Surrey Now

Published: Tuesday, August 26, 2008

Less than six months after the death of club patriarch Chuck Bailey, Whalley's baseball family is reeling again with the sudden passing of Bailey's successor, Joe Burns. The 47-year-old was admitted to Surrey Memorial Hospital on August 16 suffering from pneumonia. He appeared to stabilize but on the night of August 18, he suffered a respiratory failure, which was followed by cardiac arrest. He died peacefully Friday evening, August 22, surrounded by family."Shocking is really the way to describe it; I have no idea what happened," said Mary Ann Ricci, Burns's sister. "I just can't believe it. On Monday night he looked fine; we were joking around with him and he was just like the usual Joey. Then some time that night, something went wrong."

Burns leaves behind his wife of 22 years, Diane, and their three sons -- Ryan, Taylor and Mitchell.

Born the seventh of 11 children, Burns grew up in Vancouver before later moving to Surrey. He was involved with baseball throughout his life and was one of the driving forces behind Whalley Little League's recent successes. In addition to coaching, Burns served as vice-president of the Whalley organization for several years before taking over the presidency from Bailey earlier this year. He also served as a District 3 administrator.

"He did everything he could for Whalley Little League," said parent Herb Fischer. "When Chuck died, Joe took over the reins of a lot of the extra work that had to be done. We really didn't deserve him for the amount of work that he did. He and Chuck were the heart of the organization so this is an immeasurable blow to Whalley."

Fischer added Burns was a special coach for the kids in Whalley, a status that was reflected in the large number of visitors who came to see him in hospital. "Joe was always fun and the kids absolutely loved him," Fischer said. "It didn't matter what happened -- win or lose, the kids adored him. That's rare because he had to make tough decisions about playing time but the kids still absolutely adored him."

Ricci agreed with this assessment and said she was always impressed with the impact her brother had on youngsters.

"It's funny talking to all the baseball people because they describe him just like we would," she said. "Sometimes people are a lot more fun around their friends than they are with their family but that's exactly how Joey was all the time.

"With my kids, rather than take one of their friends with them to a Kiss concert, they'd prefer to take uncle Joey. And he wouldn't just take them to concerts; he would dress up with them too. He was amazing but that's just the way Joey was."

Funeral plans had not been finalized at the Now's Monday deadline. More information will be posted at www.thenownewspaper.com as details become available
