NSCRO News : Over 200 Men's Small College Started the Race

The 2013-14 NSCRO Men's Small College National Playoffs are underway. What started with a field of 218 teams is narrowing down.

Two of NSCRO's 4 Regions - Northeast and Central - consist of 108 teams that participate in league play solely in the Fall. In the Mid-Atlantic South Region, 31 teams play solely in the Fall with 10 Dixie Conference playing a split Fall/Winter season and 13 other South-based teams playing a Winter/Spring season. In the PacWest Region, 18 teams - Mid-America and Pacific Northwest - play a fall only NSCRO league with 30 teams from the Lonestar, Gold Coast (formerly SoCal) and Eastern Rockies playing a split Fall/Winter season and 8 NorCal teams playing a Winter/Spring season.

The Regional summary presently shows.....

Region 1 - Northeast
2012 National Champion Salve Regina won the Colonial Coast Conference and heads north to Henniker, NH for the Northeast Regional hosted by New England College (NEC) on November 16-17. NEC won the NERFU Championship and after having finished 3rd in the Small College Nation this past April, is looking to keep its National title hopes alive. This past weekend the other 2 participants were determined. The Empire Upstate Champion, Union College, hosted and edged Bowdoin College (NERFU Runnerup) 17-15, while Central Connecticut State sneaked by host Westfield State 18-15 in the New England Wide CRC Championship final. CCSU will take on NEC in one semifinal pairing while Union battles Salve Regina in the other semi.

Region 2 - Mid-Atlantic South
The Regional event is scheduled for March 29-30 in Jacksonville, FL.
The only teams to qualify this Fall for it with be the East Penn Champion and the winner of the Nov. 23 match between the East Penn Runnerup and Empire Downstate Champion. East Penn semifinal results from Nov. 10 were Penn State Berks (2010 NSCRO National Champion) dropping an 18-5 decision to Widener while Susquehanna hosted and beat Bucknell 38-26. Widener will face Susquehanna in the final on Nov. 16. The Empire Downstate final held on Nov. 10 saw Montclair State edge New Jersey Institute of Technology 12-8.
In the Potomac Conference playoffs held at the Mount St. Mary's in Emmitsburg, MD on Nov. 9-10 and host MSM convincingly defeated Catholic University in the final 60-20.
The Cardinals Conference playoffs are set for Nov. 16-17.
The Potomac and Cardinals Conference winners play each other on March 1 to see who travels to Jacksonville.
The Dixie Conference started league play on Nov. 2. In the Est Division. Tennesee Tech leads the way at 3-0, while the West Divison currently has a 3-way tie between North Alabama, UAB and Harding - all at 2-0.
Florida, Georgia and Deep South Conference won't start their league action until January.
The Champions from Florida, Georgia, Dixie and Deep South Conferences will meet on March 16-17 in Pensacola, FL in the South Cup to determine the final team in the Regional.

Region 3 - Central
The NSCRO Central Region Championship is set for Nov. 16-17 at the Moose Rugby Grounds in Elkhart, IN.
The NSCRO playoffs kicked off on Nov. 3 when the WISCARFU Champion, Wisconsin-Parkside traveled South to Evansville to take on the University of Southern Indiana. USI avenged its 2012 NSCRO playoff loss to Parkside last year with a close 24-17 win to earn a trip to Elkhart.
In the inaugural Great Lakes Cup, Wittenberg University edged Baldwin-Wallace 17-10 to earn a place in the Regional.
In Minnesota, defending National Champion St. John's University knocked off nemesis St. Thomas 37-7 in the Union's final.
In the Three Rivers Conference, Franciscan University squeaked by Robert Morris University 20-17 to return to the NSCRO playoffs. In 2011, Franciscan won the Central and finished 3rd in the 2012 National Championship. Are the Barons worthy of a return trip to Infinity Park? We shall soon find out.

Region 4 - PacWest
Occidental College will be the host of the PacWest Region Championship on April 6-7 in Los Angeles, CA.
Will they return to this event in 2014? This past Spring Occidental lost out on a trip to Nationals when the University of Denver scored a try on the final play of the match in the PacWest final.
John Brown University of Siloam Springs, Arkansas won the inaugural Mid-America Conference Small College championship with a 34-10 win over Wayne State last weekend to earn a trip to LA next Spring.
The Cowboy Cup featuring the top 2 teams from the Eastern Rockies and Lonestar small college leagues will take place in Texas on March 22-23. Both leagues has begun play this Fall and so far the University of Denver and New Mexico Highlands University are undefeated in Eastern Rockies league play with a 5-0 record.
While in Texas the Lonestar Conference is well underway. St. Edward's University has come out of the gate fast with 3 wins, while Texas-San Antonio and Angelo State sit at 2-1 in the South bracket. In the North bracket, defending Lonestar Champ Texas-Dallas has a 4-0 record, with Southern Methodist at 3-1.
The Gold Coast Conference (formerly Southern California RFU) kicks off its league action on Nov. 16.
The Northern California Conference doesn't start league play until January 26.
In the Pacific NW Small College leauge, Gonzaga surprised defending champion Puget Sound 12-7 and qualify for the March 22-23 Pacific Coast Cup to be hosted by Cal Maritime Academy in Vallejo, CA. Teams from both NorCal and Gold Coast will round the field of 4.
