Occidental College Dominates the PacWest 7s

The PacWest 7s tournament was held at Infinity Park's Desso Pitch on April 27-28.

The 6 participating clubs came from all over NSCRO's large geographic PacWest Region as follows:
Colorado College (Colorado Springs, CO)
Occidental College (Los Angeles, CA)
Sonoma State University (Rohnert Park, CA)
South Dakota State University (Brookings, SD)
Southern Methodist University (Dallas, TX)
Wayne State College (Wayne, NE)

After Saturday's pool matches were was evident that both Occidental and Sonoma State were very well prepared for 7s rugby as they dominated their opponents. Then again on Sunday morning in the semifinals, the Tigers of Occidental and the Seawolves of Sonoma State, kept the tries coming with 36-7 win by Oxy over Wayne State and Sonoma's 24-5 over Colorado College, despite a 5-5 tie at halftime.

The final was played inside Infinity Park after the NSCRO 15s 3rd Place match and in front of hundreds of rugby fans. A real thrill for the players. Oxy got off to a slow start but Joey Maloney - who would become the Tournament MVP - scored the first of his 4 tries in the match as he led Oxy to a 40-21 win. Oxy showed what quality 7s coaching can do for fine athletes with rugby skills. What coach? None other than USA Eagle 7s Dallen Stanford.

Occidental's next stop is Philadelphia for the NSCRO National 7s Championship on June 1-2.
