Benedictine Holds Off Wayne State to Advance in NSCRO PacWest Playoffs

The Black Monks of Benedictine College of Atchison, Kansas hosted Wayne State College (Wayne, Nebraska) in the opening round of the NSCRO Men's PacWest Region playoffs on Saturday, Nov. 10. Benedictine held off the Wildcats of Wayne State to win 19-17.

Referee Aaron Huehne filed the following report.

"General match atmosphere was excellent with Benedictine having about 200 actively engaged spectators in attendance. I conducted captains meeting 65 minutes prior to kickoff and personally interacted with both sides to answer questions and provide clarification during pregame warmups.

The match itself was spirited with Benedictine scoring the first 12 points. Wayne State fought back hard to tie the game and ultimately took a 5 point lead before Benedictine scored center post and converted their try, kicking with the wind.

Wayne State fought hard and strong ultimately choosing not to try a 20m penalty kick into the teeth of the wind. Game ended with Wayne State running a set penalty play and the ball being knocked forward in tackle. Only issues I witnessed were Benedictine struggled with allowing the ball carrier to place the ball at tackle and entering rucks from the side. Wayne State struggled in set pieces with their loose head boring in and their tight head standing up when driving. All issues were managed through instruction and penalties where appropriate. Benedictine's scrum half did receive a yellow card for dissent with 19 minutes remaining in the 2nd half. Upon his return we had no further incidents.

Both sides conducted themselves extremely well, played hard and were respectful of the opposition, the officials and the game. The team captains represented their clubs in an exemplary manner and both sides should be commended for their intensity and professionalism."

As a result of their win, Benedictine will participate in NSCRO PacWest Region Championship on April 6-7, 2013 in Glendale, Colorado.
