The Southern Rugby Conference forms Small College Division

The Southern Rugby Conference (SRC) invited Western Carolina University and Davidson College as Division II teams and formed a Small College division at the conference’s annual meeting, held September 22 in Wilmington N.C.

The Small College division will include teams from Guilford College, East Tennessee State University, Wingate College, USC-Aiken and Belmont Abbey.

“All of these teams are very new or have just formed,” said SRC Commissioner John Roberts. “Folding them into a league helps give them some structure while providing them an opportunity to play for a conference championship. As high school rugby continues to grow in the Carolinas, we anticipate adding more colleges to this division.”

With the addition of Davidson and Western Carolina, there are now a dozen division II conference teams, all located in the Carolinas. “Davidson and WCU have long-standing programs. In recent years, they have made strides to become better organized and are putting together stronger programs,” said Roberts.

The conference commissioner’s cabinet, too, opted to reorganize the division II teams into three regional divisions.

The Mountain Region will include Appalachian State, Western Carolina, Furman and Lander. The Piedmont will be made up of teams from UNC-Greensboro, UNC-Charlotte, Davidson and Elon. The Coastal Division will include Coastal Carolina, Citadel, UNC-Wilmington and the College of Charleston.

The winner of each division and a wild card team will complete in championship final four tournament with the winner to advance to the USA Rugby Division II national play-offs.

In other conference news, members of the Southern Rugby Conference general assembly re-elected John Roberts as Commissioner. Roberts, the head coach at Furman, helped found the conference two years ago. Jim Wiseman (UNC-W), Randy Akerman (App State), Chuck Wurl (Elon) and Paul Collie (UNC-W) were elected treasurer, competitions chair, public relations chair, and discipline chair respectively.

The conference also formed a new officer position, Small College competition chair and liaison, and elected TD Maze (Lander) to fill that slot.
