National Small College Rugby Organization LLC: Latest News: NSCRO On the Rise
NSCRO On the Rise
In the below handout you will find an overview of NSCRO about the role we are playing in the development of collegiate rugby for young men and women in the US. We plan to continue our efforts and look forward to the support and cooperation from everyone who cares about collegiate rugby.
I recently received the email below from Mike Farley, past head coach of Salve Regina University RFC (Newport, Rhode Island) and current head of alumni and fundraising for the club. I share this so everyone - who doesn't already know - can understand the importance of collegiate rugby and how hard work by both organizations and clubs can yield such positive results. If you don't know, on April 29, Salve won the NSCRO Men's D3 National Championship at Infinity Park in Glendale, Colorado.
"Just wanted to share with you how much your organization means to me. I stepped away from coaching college rugby 3 years ago. I've remained close to the school though and I help run the alumni and fundraising efforts with a great deal of support from Salve Regina. It is from that perspective that I have seen NSCRO's impact on the school and it's athletes.
The annual rugby alumni weekend is now the largest alumni gathering of any group or class. It is also by far the most successful fundraising sport. It is also the closest group of players I've ever met. Much of that is due to the team's NSCRO exposure.
Over the last 2 weeks, the team has been honored by the school, the Mayor and City Council, the Governor, the State Senate and the State House of Representatives and, today, US Senator Jack Reed. They were shown deplaning when they landed at TF Green Airport and featured on the evening news.
They've been the subject of articles in several newspapers in the city and state.
The trophies are prominently displayed, and an NSCRO Final Four banner hangs proudly in the gymnasium with the dates 2009 and 2011. (I think they need a whole new banner for 2012!!)
And this year, the ruggers ordered National Championship rings!
Because of your effort and commitment to the sport, these young men were able to achieve something unforgettable in an unforgettable location, against unforgettable competition."
