New Kent Denied Trip to State Tournament by Chancellor

The New Kent High School Lady Trojans ended their season with a three-game loss to the Chancellor, the Battlefield District Champion and #2 seed in the Region 1 tournament. New Kent jumped to an early lead in the first game, taking advantage of Chancellor hitting and serving errors to score off their own attacks. But Chancellor got over their early game jitters and finished strongly with tough serving to take the game 25-21. In the second game Chancellor dominated the Lady Trojans with a strong serving game that completely took New Kent out of their offensive system. But the Lady Trojans, who's hallmark has been to never give up, battled back in the third game, again getting some aces and kills of their own, while not quite being able to secure the win and extend the match.

Chancellor advances to the Region I championship match against Jamestown on Saturday. The Daily Press indicated on Friday that the match will be played at Jamestown High School at 2:00 pm, but this should be confirmed.

The 2008 Lady Trojan volleyball team ends their season with a 20-5 record, the best record achieved by a New Kent volleyball in Group-AA and the fourth-best record in the 23 year history of volleyball at New Kent.

JV Rallies in Second Game to Beat York, Varsity Wins in Three

With the New Kent JV team down a game and York serving for the match, both varsity teams were lined up and anxious to take the court and start their warmups. But the Lady Trojan JV team rallied behind the serving of Rachel Baldwin to win four straight points and the second game 26-24, sending the Varsity teams back to the auxillary gym while the JVs played the deciding third game.

New Kent won the toss and Court Captain Amanda Branch elected to serve in the third game while the York Falcons decided to switch sides to the "winning" court. But the Lady Trojans took full advantage of the serving opportunity and moved out to a 11 to 1 lead in the 15-point third game behind the serving and setting of Megan Weaver (3 points) and Rachel Baldwin (8 points). York rallied briefly behind their second sever who got them to 11-6, but the Lady Trojans required only two more rotations to close out the win 15-7 with three serves by Sarah Barnett.

The win improves the New Kent JV record to 6-3 going into the final match of the front half of the season, away at Tabb next Tuesday, September 23rd.

In the second match of the night, the Lady Trojan varsity won in three including 25-4 in a near perfect second game that saw only on digging error and two errors on jump serves. The first game saw an even attack distribution from the Lady Trojans with Sharda Braxton recording 5 kills, Ashton Wallace 4 kills, Courtney Jamerson 4 kills, and Hillary Metheny 2 kills. Setter Rachel Day benefited from her hitters' performance by tallying 12 assists and a .414 setting efficiency for the game.

The second game was a "serve fest" with jump-server Jessica Phaup finding a grove that resulted in 15 New Kent points including eight aces. Braxton and Wallace added another 4 kills each while Day contributed 3 and took credit for another 7 assists. New Kent's attack efficiency for the game was .750 as a team.

The third game saw Head Coach Cyndi Burnett switch to a 6-2 offense with sophomore Lena Ciaravino sharing the setting responsibilities with Day. Directing a balanced attack that saw six players tally kills, Ciaravino recorded 4 assists on 7 sets for a .571 setting efficiency. Junior varsity rookie Jalesa Johnson swung for 4 kills, junior Karianne Burcham recorded 2 kills and 2 aces from the MB position, while sophomore Meagan Clark also recorded a kill from the outside.

With the win, the Lady Trojan record improves to 8-1 and they remain in second in Bay Rivers, one match behind leader Jamestown. The Falcons fall to 8-2 and ninth place in the eleven team district. They are off on Tuesday.

Both New Kent Teams Take Poquoson in Straight Games

Both the New Kent varsity and JV volleyball teams staved off final game runs by the Islanders of Poquoson High School to secure 3-0 and 2-0 victories respectively in their matches at New Kent High School on September 16. The Poquoson JVs started the match with a 5-2 record and ended tied with the Lady Trojan JV who improved to 5-3 with the victory. The Poquoson varsity entered the gym with a 5-2 record in sole possesion of third place in the Bay Rivers District and left the gym in a four-way tie for third with Grafton, Lafayette, and Tabb. Meanwhile the Lady Trojan varsity moves retains a firm grip on second place with a 7-1 record just a game behind district leader Jamestown.

New Kent Head Coach Cynthia Burnett commented, "The coaches were happy to keep this match to three games. Poquoson has been a spoiler this season, taking Grafton and Tabb five games and winning a game from Jamestown. Winning this match puts us two wins ahead of the four teams tied for third and only one loss behind Jamestown."

Varsity stats leaders for the night included Rachel Day with 26 assists, 3 kills, 2 blocks, and 4 aces; Ashton Wallace with 11 kills, 6 digs, and 1 ace; Sharda Braxton with 7 kills, 2 blocks, and 3 aces; Jessica Phaup with 6 kills, 10 digs, and 10 aces; Courtney Jamerson with 5 kills, 1 assist, and 1 ace; Hillary Metheny with 2 kills, 1 assist, and 1 ace; and Casey O'Leary with 13 digs.

New Kent hosts the York High School volleyball teams on Thursday, September 18th at the new New Kent High School gym. See the Locations section of this web site for directions ot the new NKHS gym. The Falcon varsity enters Thursday's match with a 2-7 record in ninth place in the Bay Rivers District.

New Kent Varsity Wins All Three Matches in Tough Week

The New Kent varsity volleyball team survived two close matches to sweep their opponents in a rare three-match week.

The week started with the Lady Trojans hosting Warhill in a game that was postponed from the second week of the season due to both school's gyms being out-of-commission. Warhill entered the match with a 2-2 record having beaten Southampton and York while losing to Jamestown and Grafton. Midway throught the first game, New Kent appeard to be in control of the match with a seven point lead when Warhill setter Michelle Bottles rotated to the service line. Before the Lady Trojans could get control of a Bottles serve and win a sideout, Warhill had surged into the lead, winning the game 25-22.

New Kent recovered in the second game, just managing a 25-23 win. The momentum continued to swing throughout the match with Warhill winning the third game 26-24 while New Kent finally managed a more comfortable 25-20 win in the fourth game. In the deciding game, New Kent started off fast, but Warhill fought back with the Lady Trojans just prevailing 15-12.

New Kent had an easier time in the second match of the week on Tuesday, September 9 when the Lady Trojans swept the Southampton Indians 25-8, 25-13, 25-20. Commented New Kent varsity Head Coach Cynthia Burnett, "While the competative games like yesterday's [Wahill match] are great for the fans and players; coaches live for games like tonight's. We got to play everyone, practice some different lineups, and move some players into alternate positions. The game scores got closer as the match progressed, but our bench got some good playing time which will prepare them to step in later in the season."

But the third match of the week at Lafayette High School was another nail biter with New Kent falling behind 1-2 at the end of three games 25-23, 21-25, 18-25. With a "do or die" situation facing them, the Lady Trojans rallied in the fourth game to win by a more comfotable eight-point margin 25-17. In the deciding game, New Kent again moved into an early lead only to see the Rams challenge late in the game and work back to two-point margin before losing 15-12.

For the week, stats leaders were: Ashton Wallace with 35 kills, 3 assists, 16 digs, and 3 blocks; Sharda Braxton with 27 kills, 2 assists, 5 digs, and 14 aces; Rachel Day with 88 assists, 7 kills, 29 digs, 3 blocks, and 14 aces; Casey O'Leary with 36 digs, 3 assists.

New Kent Varsity Shows Well at James River Jamboree

The New Kent varsity volleyball team showed strength and depth during their season premiere at the James River High School Jamboree this Saturday. In their first competition of the season, the Lady Trojans tallied a 5-3 record against four Richmond-metro AAA schools. After a slow start against Cosby, the Lady Trojans only lost one other game in three matches, winning games against James River, Hermitage, and Atlee High Schools.

In the first game of each match, Head Coach Cynthia Burnett employed the 5-1 (single-setter) offense the Lady Trojans used during the 2007 season using 2007 first team all-district setter Rachel Day. Seniors Shardä Braxton and Ashton Wallace filled the M1 and O1 positions while seniors Hillary Metheny and Casey O'Leary filled the Opposite and Libero positions respectively. The first game lineup was completed with the addition of juniors Courtney Jamerson and Jessica Phaup at the M2 & O2 positions.

In the second game of each match, Coach Burnett employed a 6-2 (two-setter) offense with sophomore Lena Ciaravino taking on the second setter duties while a variety of players including juniors Karianne Burcham and Grace Belcher and sophomore Megan Clark saw action as the sixth hitter. Senior defensive specialist Brittany Strimple saw action as both a Libero and backrow sub while junior utility player Jalesa Johnson filled in as both DS and OH.

Assistant Coach Stuart Burnett commented, "We had trouble setting up a scrimmage this year due to our two main gyms being under construction. Midlothian Head Coach Mary Allen told us about the James River Jamboree at the VCU Team Camp. We called the James River coach that night. Micah (JRHS Head Volleyball Coach Micah White) needed one more team and was excited to add a 'new face' to the mix. Micah coaches for the Diamonds club and was familiar with the New Kent Juniors teams, so he knew we could compete with the AAA schools already committed to attending."

"It was a great opportunity for us to get in some real match play early in the season," said Head Coach Cynthia Burnett. "We got to see four different teams, work on both of our offenses and defenses, and everyone got good playing time. I was especially pleased with the performance of our juniors and sophomores. We were able to sub and keep our level of play at the high standard set by last season's starters."

Assistant Coach Stuart Burnett continued, "It was nice to show the Richmond volleyball community what a good team New Kent has. Many of the coaches at the Jamboree are friends going back over 20 years to our playing days at RVC or my ref'ing days when Group A & AA used to play in the winter and I ref'ed at the AAA schools in the fall. And we've already had one inquiry about scrimmaging one of the teams at the tournament next year."

The Lady Trojan varsity will next see action in a scrimmage at Mathews HS at 6:00 pm on Thursday, August 21. The JV team will also scrimmage Mathews, but they will play at another Mathews school gym at the same time. Check the Locations page for directions to Mathews High School.

Seven players are returners from the 2007 team, while six JV rookies will join the program.

Sophomores returning to the team include: Rachel Baldwin, Amanda Branch, Ashley Falls, Megan Weaver, & Shelby Wightman. They are joined by new comer Ashley Jones.

Freshman returners Sarah Barnett and Makenzie McNamara will welcome classmate Krystal Jones.

Head Varsity Coach Cynthia Burnett conducted the JV tryouts this year with the assistance of first-year JV Coach Holly Dent. Coach Burnett commented, "With four of the six newcomers already having a season of competitive volleyball behind them from the NKMS team, this team will be much more experienced than it looks on paper. I expect Coach Dent will be able to move quickly through the skills remediation and will have these girls working on their team offense and defense within the week."

The JV team's first competition will be a scrimmage at Mathews on August 21st.

Our six seniors bring more than 40 seasons of high school and club volleyball experience to the team. Our returning juniors and sophomore will be competing for starting positions and give the team depth at every position. Our two new team members are picking up the varsity systems quickly. With this strength and depth, the coaches are looking forward to the best NKVB season since our 2004 state quarterfinal appearance."

The varsity team's first competition will be an eight-team Jamboree on Saturday, August 16 at James River High School.
