New Jersey Mavericks Basketball Club, Inc.: My Site News
Mission Statement
Many AAU programs recruit “Star Players” to win basketball games and showcase their player’s talents to college coaches. Our program recruits young players and teaches them how to be a star player. Our mission is to help each player become the best basketball player and person that they can be.
The New Jersey Mavericks Basketball Club is a Girls AAU Basketball Club. Our players range from 10 to 17 years old. They come to us not to win basketball games, but rather to become more fundamentally sound players. Their understanding and desire to do the little things in basketball better, is why they will be tomorrows champions.
Our club’s name was chosen as a tribute to a good friend and great NBA fundamentals coach, Gary Boren, free throw shooting coach with the Dallas Mavericks. Coach Boren believes, and rightly so, that the Free Throw is the foundation of all shooting. He believes that the ability to shoot straight is the most important skill to learn in shooting a basketball. There are four ways you can miss a shot - left, right, short and long. By learning to shoot straight you eliminate two of the four. That is the foundation upon which all of our players develop the skills.
Fundamentals are the foundation of success. Understanding that and working at it will make every player a more desirable prospect for every coach who will ever evaluate their talents. This will be true whether they tryout for their grade school team, their high school team or for a chance to play in college.
New Jersey Mavericks Basketball Club, Inc. is permitted to draw players from within the state of New Jersey. We have divided our The New Jersey Mavericks into 3 regions to better meet the needs of our coaches, players and parents. The 3 regions are the Gateway Region (Bergen, Essex, Hudson, Middlesex, Passaic, and Union counties), the Shore Region (Monmouth and Ocean counties) and the Skyland Region (Hunterdon, Morris, Somerset, Sussex, and Warren counties) , . Our season begins in March and will continue through June/July. For the current season we anticipate hosting 14 teams and about 150 players. Each team will play in 6 to 7 tournaments between April and June/July. Our National high school teams will participate in College Evaluation Showcases. At these tournaments college coaches will be in attendance to evaluate the players’ abilities and recruit those players to play for their respective colleges/universities.
For many years there has been an increasing conflict between high school coaches, the schools athletic directors and the AAU coaches. The New Jersey Mavericks Basketball Club, Inc. was founded to turn the tide on this problem. We are not a feeder program for any high school team. In fact this year we will have more than 15 coaches involved with the program, who are or have been head high school varsity coaches. We have several coaches who have coaching experience at the Division I, II, & III college level.
We maintain an open line of communication with all of our high school age player’s coaches. We work with the high school coaches to avoid conflicts. We let them know where and when the players are practicing. We let them know where and when the players are playing in tournaments. We keep them informed of local shootouts and showcases for the players. We work together with the high school coaches to help our mutual players to get the opportunity to play at the next level. We are all in this together.
We are constantly looking to expand our relationship with college coaches at the division I, II and III schools. There are some very fine schools within a four hour radius of our homes. These coaches are becoming increasingly aware of our players and their abilities. We provide these coaches with a fair and honest assessment of our player’s abilities and shortfalls when we speak to them. Likewise, it is important that parents develop reasonable expectations about their child’s ability. Players must also become honest about their own abilities. This should not start in their senior year of high school, but rather the first time they step on a basketball court. Not every player is able to play for the big Dl teams. Notwithstanding there are many fine schools that can help our players get a great education and have some fun playing college basketball along the way. A copy of our schedule is available to all college coaches upon request.
