Guys exit season at Sectional Play

Guys Lose in Sectional Play

The Guys of Nitro Soccer played a hard fought contest against So. Charleston in  State Tournament Sectional play on Monday but lost 0-1 in the double overtime match.  Both teams played an aggressive game which resulted in multiple hard fouls and three SC players being yellow carded.

Nitro played all out from beginning to end and the game was decided on a fluke goal by SC with 6 minutes left in the second overtime period.

A season that had both highs a lows, the Nitro Guys put together some very impressive performances over the season.  They had some of the highest ranked teams in the state with the backs against the wall before coming up short of a victory.  They also played another ranked team to a 1-1 tie.  The team continued to improve and get better as the season progressed.  The youth of this years team will have a very positive effect fore the next few years.  Nitro consistantly started 3 freshman all season and played as many as 6 on the field at a time.

The season ends for the team with a record of 2-13-2.

Congratulations to the Guys from Nitro High School.  You represented Nitro Soccer in a positive way all season!

Sectional Play Begins

Cats Take on Eagles in Sectional Play

The Nitro Guys will begin Sectional Play on Monday when they take on the Eagles of So. Charleston.  The match is scheduled to begin at 8pm and will be played at Schoenbaum Field.  WHEN the Cats defeat the Eagles they will then take on George Washington on Thursday in the Sectional Semi-final match.

The Guys have shown a number of times over the season that they are capable of playing with the best teams in the state.  They took top ranked Hurricane to the wire in a 0-1 loss as well as pushing 3rd ranked Parkersburg in a 0-2 loss.

Play your best soccer of the season and make a run for the State Title and repeat what the Girls did last year!

GO WILDCATS !!

Cats Push Parkersburg Before Losing 0-1

Cats Push Parkersburg in 0-1 Loss

The Guys from Nitro pushed 3rd ranked Parkersburg for 80 minutes on Tuesday night before bowing out in a 0-1 loss.  Nitro played their best match of the season against the Big Reds and showed not only the fans but themselves that they can play with anyone in the state on any given day.  Nitro was able to move the ball around as well as play solid defense against a much more physical team.  The Big Reds took a 0-1 lead into half time.

The Wildcats came out in the 2nd half as determine as they were in the first, and continued to give Parkersburg all they could handle.  Nitro had a great opportunity to tie it up with less than 5 minutes to go in the game when Senior Jacob "Grimmy" Grimm took a shot on goal that looked to be in.  But the Parkersburg goalie was able to make a diving deflection and barely tipped the ball sending it just wide of the net.

GREAT EFFORT GUYS!    LET'S KEEP IT UP!

The guys next match is Thursday at 7pm at home when they take on top ranked AA Charleston Catholic.  This will be their last regular season match.

The Cats then play again on Friday at 5pm at Underfield Field when they take on Lincoln County in the MSAC placement game.   You won't want to miss this match since the regular season game involved lots of action, yellow cards and a near fight between a coach and a ref.

Nitro is then off for a week to get prepared for Sectional play.

Come out and watch the Cats as they try to become the Cinderella team of the 2009 State Tournament!

Wildcats Drop 1-4 Decision to Timberwolves

Wildcats Drop 1-4 Decision to Timberwolves

The Gentlemen from Nitro traveled to Spring Valley this past Thursday to take on the Timberwolves in a 6pm match.

In the first half Nitro passed the ball effectively and was able to penetrate the Spring Valley defense often but were not able to put the ball in to the net and went into the second half down 0-2.  The Cats continued to control the game in the 2nd half, but could only get one goal, which came off a header from Freshman Evan Eich on a beautiful cross directly in front of the net.

The loss brings Nitro's record to 3-10-2 going into the final week of regular season play.  The Cats next match is Tuesday @ 6pm at home against #3 Ranked Class AAA Parkersburg.  They then close out regular season on Thursday at home against #1 Class AA-A ranked Charleston Catholic at 8pm.

Come out the cheer the Guys on to big upsets in both these matches!  GO WILDCATS

Seniors Celebration Highlights Game

Gold

Seniors from the men's and women's soccer teams were honored on Tuesday night during half time of the girls soccer match.  The decorations and the underclassmen lineup served as a lovely backdrop to celebrate the accomplishments of Margit Biros, Nikko Bowden, Ryan and Courtney Coleman, Emily Cooperrider, Monica Elswick, Jacob Grimm, and Mallory Scarbro.

The Wildcats jumped to 1-0 lead early in the first half after a forward pass from Katilyn Gilham found Emily Ross and she put it in from the right side.  Parkersburg South struck back with less than a minute of play.  In the second half, Mary Lewis connected on two corner kicks to complete her hat trick.  Ali Scarbro took a free kick from Emily Cooperrider into the goal to make things interesting.  The final tally was a 3-2 loss.  Mallory Scarbro had eight saves.

Wildcats Maul Panthers

Wildcats Maul Panthers 10-0

The Nitro Guys put on in the win column on Saturday when they beat the visiting Lincoln County Panthers by a score of 10-0.  Junior Nathan "Skippy" Barnett got the Wildcats off and running when he scored the first goal only 15 minutes into the match. From there on the Cats scored often.  Lincoln County played very physical defense with more than one Nitro player ending up on the ground in a heap.  It all came to a head late in the second half when Eric Judd drove into the box and bumped the Lincoln County Goalie which resulted in multiple players pushing and shoving.  The all ended as the Referee threw out a Lincoln County Coach who displayed less than acceptable behavior towards him.

After the incident, both teams settled down and the remainder of the match was completed without any additional incidents.

The wins takes that Guys record to 3-10-2 with their next match at Spring Valley on Thursday starting at 6pm.

Don't forget Senior Night this Tuesday, October 6th when both the Guys and Lady Wildcats will be reconginized during half time of the Lady Wildcats v's Parkersburg South match.

Guys Come Up Short Against Woodrow Wilson

Guys Lose to Woodrow Wilson 0-5

The Nitro Guys dropped their record to 2-9-2 with their lose on Tuesday evening to Woodrow Wilson by a score of 0-5.  The Flying Eagles scored 5 five minutes into the match and never looked back.  Nitro's defense was put to the test all night and was able to shutdown the Eagle offense on many occassions but could not stop the explosiveness of Woodrow Wilson for the full 80 minutes of the contest.

Nitro's next match is this Saturday at home against Lincoln County.  Game time is set for 11am.

Wildcats Get Second Win

Wildcats Win Against Cross Lanes Christian

The Nitro Wildcat Guys got their second win of the season on Saturday against Cross Lanes Christain on a puddle covered field in heavy rain.  Freshman Evan Eich scored from the left side when he pounded one into the back of the net just 10 minutes into the match.  Junior Matt Bowyer scored 15 minutes later on a corner kick that got suck in water in front of the net and he pushed it past the goalie.  Both teams had many other opportunites to score goals but neither could tally one, largely due to the field conditions.

After a roll of thunder just as halftime started, the 2nd half was delayed.   Just before play resumed, both teams coaches, captains and the refs, met and agreed to play a shorted 2nd half because of the conditions.

The win takes Nitro's record to 2-9-2.  The Guys next match is Tuesday when they take on state ranked Woodrow Wilson from Beckley in a 6pm start at Underwood Field.  GO CATS!  GET THAT 3rd WIN!

Cougars Down Wildcats

Courgars Beat Wildcats 2-4

Thge Nitro Wildcats traveled up the Elk River on Thursday evening to play the Capital Cougars in an MSAC match.  Nitro held the contest close through most of the evening before falling short by a score of 2-4.

The first half was a well played  40 minutes by the Guys who went into half-time tied 1-1.  The goal was scored by Freshman Angelo Sirianni.

Shortly before the close of the half, Junior Richard Engle and a Capital both went for a loose ball which resulted in Richard suffering a season ending injury.  Richard was taken by ambulance to CAMC General where he is scheduled for surgery on his leg/ankle on Friday morning.

The second half was a back and forth battle as Capital went up 1-2 and then 1-3 before Junior Matt Bowyer took a ball down the sideline before feeding it to Freshman Corey Tornes for a shot into the back to the net, pulling Nitro to within a 2-3 score.  Capital sealed the victory with less than 10 minutes to go in the match on a goal that made the score 2-4.  Nitro's season record now stands at 1-9-2.

The Cats make the short trip to Cross Lanes Christian this Saturday to take on the Warriers in a 10am match.  GOOD LUCK GUYS!

Soccer Banquet- November 8th

The Annual Nitro Soccer Banquet will be Sunday, November 8th at Cross Lanes United Methodist Church.   This event is a fun evening that celebrates the season for both teams.  There is always some great stories that are told as well as the presentation of player certificates and "letters".  The banquet will end, as usual, with the season in review presented by Cooperrider Productions.  Trust me when I say you will not want to miss this!

Tickets will be available at all home matches and are $13.00 per person.  This year, the Top Spot located in Sissonville will be preparing the food-- so it should be yummy.

If you want to help in making this evening its usual success, please contact either Lisa Scarbro or Sherri Richardson to see what you can do to help.  There are many details to be done and a little help by a lot of people will make the event more enjoyable for everyone.

Patriots Shoot Wildcats

The Lady Patriots came out fast on Tuesday night en route to a 9-1 victory over Nitro (2-7-1).  George Washington scored early and often to build a 6-0 lead by half time.  Emily Ross scored the lone goal for the Wildcats.  Mallory Scarbro and Madeline Southall shared goal-keeping duties.  No statistics were available for this game.

Wednesday, September 23
Cats lose to GW

Cats Lose to GW 0-5

The Cats lost to George Washington- ranked 4th in the State) on Tuesday evening by a score of 0-5.  The guys had a few chances to push the ball into the back of the net, but could not capitalize on any of them.

The highlight for Nitro came with 15 minutes to go in the game when Coach Wardell put Freshman Lee ... in for Senior Nikko Bowden and moved him to the center forward position..... at least I think that is where he was suppose to be playing.  With appx. 5 minutes to go, Bowden came barreling down the field with the ball, weaving in and out of Patriot players, passing to his right and then receiving the ball back in the front of the goal.  As he moved the ball into striking position, he found himself with nothing but the GW goalie to keep him from scoring.  After some twinkle toes movement, he send his shot wide to the left causing the home fans to groan in dissappointment.  Drats!

The guys next travel to Capital on Thursday for a 7:30pm start against the Cougars.

Good Luck Wildcats!

The Nitro girls (2-7-1) squared off against top-ranked Sissonville in a Saturday afternoon match at Schoenbaum Stadium in Coonskin Park.  The game was a defensive contest through much of the day with each team getting opportunities to convert.  Lydia Murray scored the only goal of the day in the first half.  Sissonville finished with nine shots on goal and ten corner kicks to Nitro's one shot and four corner kicks.

Girls Get Two In a Row

Allison Scarbro became the second Nitro player in as many games to get a hat trick as Nitro (2-5-1) handed St. Albans a 6-2 loss on Thursday night.  Scarbro scored twice in the first half and got her third goal ten minutes into the second half.  Emily Ross, Emily Cooperider, and Morgan Richardson joined the attack with one goal apiece.  Strong passing and aggressive midfield play contributed to a decisive 20-3 shot advantage.  Maggie Downham and Katie Asbury scored goals in the last two minutes of the game for the Red Dragons.  Mallory Scarbro and Madeline Southall combined for one save.  Marissa White had seven saves for St. Albans.

Saturday, September 19

Nitro Downs Huntington St. Joe

Guys Get First Win Against Huntington St. Joe
The Guys traveled to Huntington on Thursday night and returned to Nitro with their first win of  the season.  Nitro went up 2-0 by half time and added another goal in the second half to seal their victory.  Scoring for the Wildcats were two members of the "Freshman Front", Angelo Sirianni and Evan Eich, Junior Nathan "Skippy" Barnett scored the other Nitro goal.  Assists are credited to Senior Ryan Coleman, Sophomore Ian McGill and Freshman Evan....  Nitro's record is now 1-7-2 half way through the 2009 season.
Nitro's next match was to have be this Saturday at home against Fairmont East, but the match has been cancelled due to illness amoung the East players.  As a result, the Guys next match will be at home on Tuesday, September 22nd against the highly ranked George Washington Patriots.

SC Beats Nitro Boys

SC Beats Nitro Boys 5-2

Nitro dropped their season record to 0-5-2 on Tuesday losing to So. Charleston by a score of 2-5.  Nitro got on the board first ten minutes into the match on a free kick by Freshman Alex White, but SC answered with a goal of their own 10 minutes later and never looked back.  Nitro went into the locker room at half time down 1-3 and Coach Wardell made some big changes.  Starting an all Freshman line up in the second half, except for Senior Jacob Grimm the Cats allowed two goals in the second half and added one to their total on a PK.  Nitro stuck with their second half line up only rotating two sophomores and two other seniors in on a very limited basis.  The experience should pay dividends down the road for the team.

Nitro's next match is Saturday at Greenbrier East at 2pm.

Tuesday, September 8
Boys Tie Winfield

Boys Tie Winfield 1-1

The Nitro Boys Soccer team traveled to Winfield on Monday evening to take on the Generals.  Winfield entered the match with a record of 2-2-2 and Nitro entered 0-4-1.

Nitro got on the board first only 10 minutes into the game on a PK by Senior Ryan Coleman.  The PK was a result of hand ball by a Winfield player in the box.  Nitro applied pressure on the Generals throughout the first half and went into the half time still up 1-0.  Winfield came out in the second half much more aggressively and had the Cats playing back on their heels much of the second half.  Winfield had their own PK opprotunity and converted it to tied the match.  The PK was a result of a shove in the box by a Nitro player.  After the PK by Winfield, both teams had great opportunities for goals but neither could covert them into points.

Nitro's "Freshman Front" (Geoffrey Bevil, Evan and Matthew) applied pressure on the Winfield defense all night and kept the much more experienced Generals in disarray throughout the game.  Nitro's young squad has made significant improvement since the first game of the season with each match resulting in more of a "team effort".  Their record is now 0-4-2.

Nitro returns to action tomorrow, Tuesday, against So. Charleston at Oaks Field.  Game time is 6pm.

Friday, September 4
Boys Lose to Hurricane

Nitro Boys Lose to Hurricane 0-2

The Nitro Boys Soccer Team took on undefeated and unscored upon Hurricane on Thursday night at Underfield Field.  Nitro hung tight but dropped the contest 0-2.  Hurricane scored both their goals in the first half.  Nitro had a great opportunity to be the first team in 2009 to score on the Redskins on a shot by Freshman Alex White but the ball came crashing off the upper right corner of the cross bar.  Nitro's Senior Keeper Nikko Bowden stayed busy and had a total of 20 saves for the Cats.

The young Wildcat teams continues to mature each game as the many underclassmen get experience.  The team's record stands at 0-4-1.

Nitro's next match is Monday, Sept. 7th when they travel to Winfield for a 6pm varsity start.  A JV game is scheduled to follow the varsity contest.

Keep up the hard work Boys.  The wins will come.

The next match is Thursday, at home, against undefeated Hurricane.  Play hard and aggressive Cats and send the Redskins home with their first lose of the season.

Nitro Boys Lose Home Opener

The Nitro Boys played their home opener on Thursday night against Huntington High at Underwood Field.  The game started with both teams trying to feel each other out and set strategies that would translate into goals.  Nitro took a hit only 8 minutes into the game when Senior and Co-captain Ryan Coleman went after a loose ball and collided with a Huntington High player.  Ryan had to be carried off the field by Coach Wardell and did not return to the game.  Huntington scored shortly after and it proved to be all that they would need.

Going into half-time, Nitro was only down 0-1.  The Highlanders came out hard in the second half and scored two quick goals, one 5 minutes in and another 4 mintues later and the Wildcats could never mount a comeback effort.

All members of the team got considerable playing time, a fact that should bode well for the young Cats as the season progresses.  The team record is now stands at 0-2-1.

The Boys next match is Tuesday at home against the Ripley Vikings.  Varsity is set to start at 6pm with a JV game to follow.

Boys Lose to Cabell Midland in Home Opener

The Nitro Boys played their home opener on Tuesday evening at Underwood Field.  The contest was tight throughout but the Wildcats ended up losing to Cabell Midland by a score of 2-0.   The Cats were down 1-0 at halftime and could not put a shot in the net, despite many excellent opportunities.  A penalty kick in the second half for the visiting Knights sealed the deal and dropped the Boys records to 0-1-1.

The Boys are back in action on Thursday night against the Huntington High Highlanders.  Game time is set for 7:30am at Nitro.  The match will be preceeded by the Lady Wildcats taking on Winfield at 5:30pm.

Nitro Boys Tie Riverside 1-1

The Nitro Boys Soccer Team traveled to Riverside on Sat. to play their first match of the season.  In a game where skills were evenly matched throughout, both teams scored goals in the second half after playing to a scoreless halftime.

Riverside got on the board first when they scored 15 minutes into the second half on a Nitro defense that broke down on a Riverside run.  The Wildcats knotted it up at 1-1 on a ball that was fed into the Riverside box by Jacob Grimm and bounced of a number of Riverside players before Alex White got a foot on it and scored.  With 10 mintues left in the game, both teams had chances to get a victory but neither could find the back of the net again.

Nitro's next match is against Cabell Midland at Underwood Field on Tuesday, Aug. 25th.  Varsity game time is 5pm with a JV scheduled to follow.
