NEWTOWN TO FACE SUSAN WAGNER IN FIRST ROUND OF PLAYOFFS
The Pioneers 9-7 finish in Queens West earned them a 24 seed, and a trip to Staten Island to face 2nd place Susan Wagner in the first round of the playoffs.
Wagner, who finished 16-2, should really test the abilities of Newtown. Wagner has the distinction of handing second seeded Tottenville their only loss this season.
Newtown's hopes will rest in the competent hands, or should I say arm, of junior Andres Caceres. Caceres has been as good a pitcher as anyone else in the league this year, and hopes to lead the Pioneers into the second round.

NEWTOWN WRAPS REGULAR SEASON PLAY, AWAITS POST-SEASON BID
The Pioneers closed out league play on Wednesday, May 18, with a 6-2 win over Long Island City. The victory improved their record to 9-7, and clinched a playoff spot for them.
Newtown was led by junior pitcher Andres Caceres, who picked up his 5th league win, fanning 14 Bulldogs along the way.
Playoff matchups will be announced Monday, May 23, with games slated to kick of on Wednesday, May 25. Newtown figures to be seeded somewhere in the low to mid 20s, and would certainly be among the prime candidates for a first round upset.

NEWTOWN BATS STAY HOT DURING GEORGE WASHINGTON TOURNAMENT
The Pioneers continued to hit the ball extremely well during the 2nd annual GW Tournament, even though they finished with an 0-5 record.
Standout players at the plate included Andres Caceres (6/14, 9 RBIs), Jeffrey Gomez (6/15, 4 RBIs) and Jimmy De La Cruz (4/8, 2 RBIs).
Comeptition in the event was stiff, as all 5 opponents are expected to qualify for the playoffs in May.

NEWTOWN CLOSES OUT WEEK WITH 2-1 RECORD
The Pioneers split a home and home series with Bryant HS this week, winning the opener 6-5, but falling in the second game 5-4.
Newtown victory over Bryant came in dramatic fashion. Down by 1 going into the bottom of the 7th, Newtown loaded the bases before Andres Caceres scored the tying run. With the bases still full, Jeff Gomez delivered a single to right to score the winning run.
As sweet as the come from behind victory was, the loss the next day was just as bitter. In the 5th, 6th and 7th inning, the Pioneers stranded runners at 3rd with less than 2 outs, keeping the Owls in the game. Bryant executed a squeeze play in the bottom of the 8th to hand Newtown its first league loss of the season.
The Pioneers got back on the right track with a 6-5 win in non league play over Francis Lewis. Pitching and defense were the name of the game. Alexis Garcia notched his first career win with 4 solid innings of relief. Yordis Veras and Delvy Fernandez combined to drive in 5 of the Pioneers 6 runs.
Newtown is back in action on Tuesday against Franklin K Lane. It is the Pioneers first home game in over 18 months, floowing the renovation by the Take the Field organization.

MADISON ENDS PIONEERS SEASON IN PSAL PLAYOFFS
Lack of offense by Newtown and excellent execution by Madison proved too much for the Pioneers as they bowed out in the first round of the playoffs, 5-1.
Newtown was hurt by the absence of clean up hitter Jeff Gomez, who was nursing a badly sprained ankle, as the Pioneers managed only 4 hits against Madison.
Newtown finished the season 10-7 in PSAL play, a 5 game improvement from last season. The Pioneers only graduate 4 seniors this season, and should only improve on this season's performace next year.

PIONEERS QUALIFY FOR POST SEASON FOR FIRST TIME SINCE 2001
After finishing the regular season with a 10-6 mark in the Queens A West division, Newtown was invited to the big dance, the PSAL playoffs.
The Pioneers came away with the 27th seed, pitting them against 6th seeded James Madison in the first round. Madison should provide the toughest test for the Pioneers this season, as they will field a well-seasoned playoff tested team.
Senior Tommy Mejia (3-0, 3 complete games in his last 3 starts) will get the start for the underdog Pioneers, who will have to play the game without junior captain Jeff Gomez. Gomez, who suffered a badly sprained ankle against LIC, will be out for the remainder of the season.
