NEWTOWN ALUMNI EVENT A HUGE SUCCESS
After months of careful planning, the first annual Newtown Baseball Alumni event was a big success. Over 40 former players attended the gathering, many of them with their families and friends. The alumni reunion included players from as far back as 1969, as well as the entire team from the 77-78 season.
Probably the most important figure at the event was a very emotional Warren Albert, who coached most of the players that were in attendance. Coach Albert openly admitted that he wore sunglasses because, "I don't want the guys to see me getting teary eyed." Coaches Albert and Rosenblatt threw out the ceremonial first pitches to kick off the softball games.
The event was designed to create a scholarship fund for future Newtown baseball players. Special thanks to former Newtown catcher and current NY Mets General Manager Omar Minaya for donating autographed jerseys, hats and bats that were raffled off. The raffles raised over $1800.
Many others contributed greatly to this event, including: HSBC Securities, The Supper Club, F.A.N.T. Corp., Spalding and Tony Santiago. Without their generosity, this event would not have been able to happen.
Last, but not least, a HUGE thanks to Alfred Pedraga, Peggy Musa and Jose Musa. The event was their idea, and they made sure that it ran flawlessly.
