Monday, June 26 Gems Place Second At N.H.A.S.A. States The Gems completed a very successful weekend at the N.H.A.S.A. State Tournament in Rochester during the weekend of June 23 through 25. We won our first two games (one each on Friday night, and early Saturday morning), and then had to sit around for six hours for our third game, late on Saturday afternoon. After the long layoff, the girls were lethargic, and the New Hampshire Invasion gave us a pretty good "shellacking", dropping us down into the losers' bracket, and necessitating an early Sunday morning start time. Sunday proved to be a different day, as we knocked off three very good teams in succession, with the third win coming in the losers' bracket finals against the tenacious New Hampshire Junior Hawks. The nail-biter win propelled us into the finals against the undefeated Invasion club. The Invasion scored 2 runs in the top of the first, and we put three on the board in our half of the third. They then tied it up, but we forged ahead once more, only to have them tie it up yet again in the top of the seventh. We failed to score in the bottom of the seventh, so the game went into the "international tie breaker". The Invasion were able to score in their half of the first tie breaker inning, but we left our runner on third. While it certainly would have been nice to win, it became obvious that the girls are coming together as a team, and that the Gems will soon be a very good team, indeed!
