NFWB: NFWB Scholarship
Friday, January 25NFWB Baseball/Softball for Youth announces NFWB/Bernadette Sarafa Memorial Scholarship.
The North Farmington/West Bloomfield (NFWB) Baseball/Softball League for Youth is pleased to announce the formation of the NFWB/ Bernadette Sarafa Memorial Scholarship. Funds will be used to award scholarships of no less than $500.00 to eligible high school seniors entering a four year college or vocational school and who have participated in the NFWB Baseball/Softball League for a minimum of four (4) years.
Alan Borsen, former NFWB President, suggested the scholarships and said “The league has been trying to figure out a way, for many years, to help make an impact on NFWB players/participants even after they left our organization and this is an excellent way to do it.” The scholarship can be obtained by filling out the necessary application which can be found at the bottom of this page. A scholarship selection committee, chaired by long time NFWB Board Member Tony Agosta, will determine the annual winners from the various applicants by June of every year and payments will be made to the winner’s schools that September. “We hope to award anywhere from 2-4 scholarships every year.” Mr. Agosta said.
The award is named in remembrance of Bernadette Sarafa who was tragically killed in an unfortunate accident in June, 2006. Bernie Rubenstein, current President of NFWB, said “The scholarship is named for her because of the volunteer work that her son, Haithem K. Sarafa has contributed to NFWB Baseball/Softball over the past 10 years.” NFWB is contributing $1,000.00 per year for the scholarships and the Sarafa family is matching every year’s contribution. NFWB Baseball/Softball for Youth is one of the areas oldest and largest non-profit volunteer sports organizations with over 1,300 players participating in house baseball/softball as well as tournament and travel programs.
High School seniors can contact NFWB for eligibility and application requirements. Call the League Secretary/Administrator Janet Warsh at 248-865-6392 for more information on the scholarship.
