The Fighting Irish are a community based team that does multiple volunteer services throughout the City of Troy. Including past and upcoming events such as the Capital District Pop Warner Challenger Flag Football League, the Albany Equinox, and the Capital District Special Olympics.
The City of Troy is located in the Capital District area of New York State. Troy’s Fighting Irish is the newest minor league football team in the Capital District area, dedicated to excellence on and off the field! The Fighting Irish were established in 2007 by a Not-For-Profit volunteer board of directors.
Irish-Americans played a significant and defining role in the cultural and industrial development of the City of Troy throughout the 18th and 19th centuries and are the largest self-reported ethnic group in Troy at 23%. This is where Troy’s Fighting Irish board of directors came up with the team name.
Troy is known as the birthplace of Uncle Sam, as well as the home of HVCC, Russell Sage College and world renowned RPI. Troy also hosts multiple other great activities.
In 2007 the Irish went 4-5 in the regular season, earning them an NYAFL playoff berth in their first season of operation.
In 2008 the Irish went on to a (6-4) regular season earning a second straight playoff birth in the NFA. After loosing in the opening round, to the soon to be NFA Champions, the Fighting Irish received a bid to play in the XII National Harvest Bowl Tournament vs. the Charlestown (MA) Townies.
