Newtown One celebrated the I-84 Travel League championship following a win over Newtown Two.
Members of the Newtown One 11-year-old I-84 travel league baseball team completed their season with a championship game victory on August 2.
The team placed first in the regular season and went undefeated through the playoffs to capture the championship and post a 24-3 record. In addition to league play, Newtown played several A teams and a 12-year-old team. Newtown averaged 14 runs per game. The team only allowed, on average, four runs per game and posted five shutouts. Given the league pitching restrictions, eight different pitchers were used throughout the season.
Members of the team included, Jared Brady, Stephen Brittin, Chris Calo, Sam Czel, Joe Duero, Matt Elias, Matt Hess, Devin Luzietti, Shawn McCarthy, Mason Melillo, Nick Samuelson and Declan Sullivan. The team is managed by Ed Brady and coached by Bob Elias and Jim Luzietti.
In the championship game, Newtown One beat natural rival Newtown Two, 10-3. Newtown One exploded for five runs in the first inning. Czel doubled in Luzietti who had singled; Hess drove in Czel; and Elias had a big two-out single to drive in Brittin who was hit by a pitch and Calo who had walked. Samuelson closed out the rally by driving in Brady. The team tacked on two more runs in the second inning. Czel again doubled in Luzietti and Hess drove in Czel. Team One put the game out of reach with three more runs in the fifth inning, with Calo driving in two. Melillo, Luzietti and Elias pitched two stellar innings each. Brittin and McCarthy made several nice catches in the outfield.

Newtown Bombers Capture New England Title - On to the World Series

Newtown Tens Win Second State Championship
Danbury, CT. Ron Schmidt
Newtown’s Ten Year Old Babe Ruth Baseball All Star team prides itself on playing tournament games that are dominated by pitching, stellar defense and timely hitting. This formula held true to form through the first three games of the State Tournament, allowing Newtown to take a 3-0 record into the final round, outscoring the opposition by a combined score of 21-8. No one would have predicted that the Bombers would then have to survive one of the highest scoring final round games in State Tournament memory against a hitting juggernaut from Woodbridge on a humid night at Rogers Park in Danbury. But survive they did, prevailing 14-12 in an exciting back and forth contest.
After uncharacteristically falling behind by four runs in the top of the first, the Bombers calmly went about their business in the bottom of the frame, plating eight runs to take an 8-4 lead. Gary Braun started the rally with a triple that scored Dan Poeltl, who had doubled, and Nick Barreto, who had worked a one-out walk. Andrew Kelley and Dean Demers then hit successive singles to plate two more runs, tying the game. Jon Hull then singled driving in Colton Sposta with the go-ahead run. The Bombers had now batted around and went to work on taking the game back from Woodbridge. Lead off man Reid Schmidt worked a two-out walk and Poeltl singled, driving in Sposta and Hull. A bases loaded walk to Braun scored Schmidt making the score 8-4 Newtown after just one inning of play. Woodbridge got one run back in the top of the second, and the damage could have been a lot worse if it wasn’t for a brilliant 6-4-3 double played turned by Poeltl and David Gerics with no outs and the bases loaded. The Bombers countered with a run in the bottom of the frame as Joe Davis took one for the team, getting hit by a pitch leading off. Davis eventually came around to score on a bases loaded sacrifice fly by Schmidt.
Woodbridge would simply not quit however and scored five more runs in the top of the third to take a 10-9 lead and steal the momentum from the Bombers. The Newtown coaches, feeling a bit of unease at this turn of events, took it as a positive sign that the players were not concerned at all; in fact one was quoted as saying: “Coach, isn’t this a great game?!”. That statement sums up the mental toughness of this group of players; they are not bothered by pressure and believe in themselves as a team. Sure enough, the Bombers pushed three more runs across in the bottom of the third to re-take the lead 12-10. Barreto led off with a walk and scored on a two-out double by Davis. Gerics then walked and Sposta stroked a clutch two-out single scoring Davis and Gerics. Poeltl was given the ball for the top of the fourth and responded with the first scoreless half-inning of the game, stunning the large crowd.
Newtown managed to squeeze home two insurance runs in the bottom of the fourth making the score 14-10 Bombers. With two outs, Michael Allwein walked and went to third on Braun’s double. Kelley then hit an impossibly high fly ball to deep center that left the range of the light towers, disappearing into the night sky and eluding the Woodbridge center fielder. Allwein and Braun both scored and these runs were needed as never-say-die Woodbridge responded with two more runs in the top of the fifth, making it a 14-12 ballgame. After Newtown failed to score in the bottom of the fifth, despite a one-out double by Chad Magoulas, Poeltl again strode to the mound and with an exhausted crowd still cheering on both teams, calmly struck out the first two batters. After a two out double by Woodbridge brought the tying run to the plate, Poeltl took a deep breath and threw the last pitch of a long game to Woodbridge’s number nine hitter. The result was a weak grounder to Poeltl, who scooped it up and flipped the ball to Schmidt at first, ending an epic battle for the State title.
Newtown’s State title run began with a well-played 8-2 win over a scrappy Greenwich team that held the Bombers to two runs through the first three innings. Starting pitcher Sposta hurled two scoreless innings and Hull a scoreless third, which allowed the locals to go up 2-0 on an RBI double by Braun in the first and an RBI single by Gerics in the third. The floodgates opened in the fourth however and Newtown put the game out of reach by scoring six runs. Demers led off with a walk, Poeltl singled and Allwein doubled scoring Demers. Successive singles by Braun, Kelly and Davis drove in three more runs and the sixth run came in on a fielder’s choice by Gerics. Greenwich scratched out runs in the fourth and fifth, but Hull and Poeltl persevered on the mound and preserved the win.
Game two pitted the Bombers against a Danbury team that had won a thrilling 1-0 seven inning affair against Woodbridge the night before, but couldn’t keep Newtown off the scoreboard this day as the Bombers pushed across seven runs and won 7-4. Danbury fell behind 3-0 in the bottom of the first as Poeltl scored on a wild pitch and Kelley knocked in two more with a double, scoring Barreto who had singled and Braun who walked. Sposta again worked two scoreless innings to start the game, striking out three, and was aided by a spectacular over-the-shoulder catch by Gerics in the top of the first. Danbury closed the gap to 3-2 in the top of the third, but the Bombers answered quickly and plated three more runs in the bottom of the inning. Braun and Kelley both doubled leading off the inning, scoring the first run and Gerics drove in Braun with a double of his own with one out off of reliever Deivi Nunez. Sposta delivered the third run with an RBI grounder to second. Danbury scored two more runs in the fourth making the score 6-4, but Newtown answered with an insurance run in the fifth as Gerics drove in Demers who had led off with a double. Hull and Poeltl combined for a scoreless fifth and sixth, sealing the win for the Bombers, but needed a key play by Kelley in the fifth, who tracked down a long drive in right center for the first out of the inning.
Newtown now had to face a tough Brookfield team in game three and proved they were up to the task in a workman-like 6-2 win. Sposta was ‘lights-out’ in this one, hurling three brilliant scoreless innings to start the game, holding onto a slim 1-0 lead that resulted from an RBI double by Kelley in the first inning. Brookfield scored two runs in the bottom of the fourth to take the lead 2-1, but the Bombers came back quickly in their half of the fifth, plating three runs on an RBI single by Kelley and a two-run double by Davis. After Poeltl hurled a scoreless bottom of the fifth, Newtown added two insurance runs in the sixth. Schmidt singled leading off and came home on an RBI single by Braun. After another single by Kelley (4 for 4 on the night), Davis picked up his third RBI of the night by singling in Braun for the sixth run. Poeltl pitched a scoreless sixth, aided by a nice play on a hard grounder to Hull at short, who made a strong throw to first that was short-hopped by Schmidt. Newtown was now 3-0 setting the stage for the dramatic final game with Woodbridge.
The Bombers now move on to the New England Regional Championships in Marlborough, MA. After the opening ceremonies on Friday night, Newtown will play a minimum of three games this weekend and if successful, would vie for the crown on Tuesday, July 26th.
Bombers Off To A Great Start
Ron Schmidt
Bombers 3-0 in Districts; Finish Third in Leonard Tournament
Newtown’s ten year old Babe Ruth Baseball All Star team kicked off its summer season by going 8-2 in its first two tournaments. The defending New England Regional Champions are now finding out what is like to be the ‘team to beat’ and this year’s competition has definitely been more challenging than what the Bombers saw in 2004.
The Tens began their travel season in Bethel’s annual Leonard Invitational Tournament and after a first round 12-2 win against New Canaan, it was deja-vu all over again as a very improved Woodbridge team tossed the Bombers into the losers’ bracket for a second straight year by a score of 11-6. In the New Canaan game, David Gerics (2 for 3, 2 runs), Michael Allwein (2 for 2, RBI), Nick Barreto (single, BB, 2 runs, RBI), Reid Schmidt (single, 2 runs, RBI), and Dean Demers (single, RBI) led Newtown at the plate, while Jon Hull (3 innings of effective pitching) and Dan Poeltl (2 scoreless innings) shut down New Canaan’s bats to notch the win.
In game two, Woodbridge used a nine-run second inning to effectively end the Bomber’s fifteen game winning streak that dated back to last year’s District Tournament. Newtown did battle back to score six runs, but it was not enough to avoid a return trip to the losers’ bracket. Schmidt (2 for 4, 2 runs, RBI, double), Andrew Kelley (2 for 3), Gerics (single, 2 runs), Barreto (single, run) and Hull (single, 2 RBIs) helped fuel the comeback effort while Chad Magoulas pitched three innings of effective relief, allowing Newtown to stay within striking distance of eventual Tourney champ Woodbridge.
Newtown now faced a tough Danbury team featuring the hard throwing Deivi Nunez, who allowed three hard-earned runs over the first three innings. The key hit was a double by Kelley that scored Joe Davis and Gary Braun in the first inning, providing all the runs the Newtown pitching staff needed as the Bombers prevailed 9-0. Poeltl (3 for 4, RBI), Braun (2 for 2, 2 runs), and Demers (single, 2 RBIs) all contributed big hits for the Bombers. Newtown’s ace Colton Sposta made his successful return to the mound after a brief stint on the disabled list (sore arm) with two scoreless innings of work and five strikeouts, while Poeltl, Magoulas and Hull provided four more innings of shutout ball to seal the win.
The Bombers now had to face host team Bethel in the next round and once again came out on top with a convincing 8-1 win that featured more exceptional pitching and team defense. The trio of Sposta, Hull and Poeltl combined for six innings of one-run ball, while Kelley (2 for 3, RBI), Allwein (single, 2 RBIs), Magoulas (double, 2 RBIs) and Davis (double, 2 RBIs) provided the run support.
New Fairfield was now next in line and Newtown continued its run by winning 9-3. Schmidt (2 for 4, 2 runs) and Poeltl (2 for 4, run) hitting in the lead-off and second positions in the order, set the table for Demers (2 for 2, double, 2 RBIs) and Braun (triple, 2 RBIs), while Allwein chipped in with a double and an RBI and Gerics singled and scored in the fourth. The three-headed pitching combo of Sposta, Hull and Poeltl once again shut down the opponent’s bats and combined for 6 K’s. A much improved New Milford team now stood in the way of the Bombers reaching the finals of the losers’ bracket, but superb pitching once again kept Newtown alive as the boys prevailed 5-4 in an exciting, down to the wire contest. Sposta hurled three innings of perfect ball, striking out three and Poeltl hung on for three more pressure-packed innings, striking out the final batter with the tying run on second to end the game. Poeltl also led the Bombers at the plate, going 3 for 3 with a double and 2 RBIs. Davis (single, RBI) and Kelley (single, RBI) chipped in with key hits and Schmidt (single, 2 runs, 3 SB’s) continued getting on base and scoring runs from the lead-off spot.
The Bombers had now run their tourney record to 5-1 and fought their way back to the final round of the losers’ bracket. Unfortunately for Newtown, another much-improved team, Brookfield, had accomplished the same feat and were the better team this day, ending the Ten’s title hopes by a score of 8-4. Sposta and Hull, working with Schmidt behind the plate, kept the Brookfield hitters off balance through the first four innings with a masterful combination of fast balls and off-speed pitches. Schmidt accounted for two runs by tripling and scoring in the third and singling in Hull (on base all three times up) in the fourth, allowing Newtown to build a 3-2 lead after four innings. Barreto stroked a clutch single in the third inning plating Poeltl, who was 2 for 4 on the day. The Brookfield bats came alive in the last two innings however and Newtown could not answer with a rally of their own, allowing Brookfield to advance to the finals against eventual champ Woodbridge.
District Tournament
The Tens now headed for New Milford and the District Four Tournament and faced Bethel in the opening game. With the offense running on all cylinders, the Bombers lived up to their name, hitting two long home runs on the way to an 11-1 victory. The first inning proved decisive as Reid Schmidt led off with a double and was brought in to score on a single by Nick Barreto. Gary Braun then stroked a double setting the stage for a long three-run homer by Andrew Kelley to left center field making it 4-0 Newtown. After a walk to Jon Hull in the second, Barreto made it 5-0 with a single, plating Hull. Consecutive doubles by Kelley and Colton Sposta in the third produced another run and then in the fourth, the floodgates opened and five more runs came in, ending the game via the mercy rule. Hull and Schmidt led off with consecutive walks and Dan Poeltl’s single scored Hull. Michael Allwein’s sacrifice fly then scored Schmidt and a walk to Braun loaded the bases for Kelley who came through with another sac fly. Chad Magoulas then strode to the plate and sent an 0-2 fastball over the left centerfield fence scoring the last three runs of the inning. Sposta was brilliant on the mound for the Bombers, pitching three runs of one-run ball and Hull pitched a perfect fourth to seal the win.
Game two pitted Newtown against a young and inexperienced team from Redding and the final result was a 19-1 four inning win. Poeltl (4 for 5) and Schmidt (3 for 3) led the attack while Braun (2 for 4), Barreto (2 for 5), Dean Demers (2 for 4, double) and Michael Allwein (single, 2 RBIs) all hit the ball hard. Poeltl pitched two perfect innings striking out three, while Braun and Joe Davis closed out the win with two strong innings of work.
In the pivotal third game, the Bombers faced the very tough team from Brookfield that ended Newtown’s run in the Leonard Tournament. The boys came to play this day however and turned the tables on Brookfield, winning 8-4. A fast start in the first inning set the tone: Schmidt walked leading off, Poeltl singled and Braun walked to load the bases for Kelley, who drove a double to the fence scoring two runs. Demers then walked re-loading the bases, followed by another walk by David Gerics driving in the third run of the inning. Schmidt and Poeltl both walked in the second and came in to score on wild pitches pushing the Newtown lead to 5-1. Gerics led off the third with a perfect bunt up the first base line and went to third on an overthrow and eventually scored on a fielder’s choice grounder by Hull, making the score 6-2. The Bombers scored two more runs in the fourth on a singles by Poeltl, Kelley and Demers. The pitching trio of Sposta, Hull and Poeltl kept the potent Brookfield bats contained for most of the game and were backed up by outstanding defense on the field.
The Bombers will now face Brookfield in the final round and will need to win one of two games to capture the District crown.
