RACING RULES OF THE NARRAGANSETT BAY SLED DOG CLUB
BEFORE THE START:
1. The race marshal along with his or her
assistants shall be elected by the
board. This committee will serve at
each race.
2. The race marshal may disallow any dogs
for any just cause.
3. All dogs must be vaccinated against
rabies, parvo virus and distemper. The
driver must be willing to provide proof
of vaccination for all dogs under his
control upon request.
4. No dog shall be brought from a kennel
where any sign of a contagious disease
exists.
5. The race marshal may cancel any class or
shorten the course length if he feels
conditions warrant such.
6. All rigs must have a working locking
brake and a snub line/brush hook. All
sleds must have a snub line and a snow
hook.
7. All equipment is subject to the approval
of the race marshal.
8. Whips, chemicals and other such articles
are NOT allowed.
9. Class sizes are:
8 dog-no more than 8 dogs
6 dog-no more than 6 dogs
4 dog-no more than 4 dogs
2 dog-no more than 2 dogs
1 dog-no more than 1 dog
10. Junior classes will be held in the 1,
2 and 4 dog classes.
11. Ages of the drivers shall be:
8 dog-16 years and up
6 dog-16 years and up
4 dog senior-16 years and up
4 dog junior-12 years to 16 years
2 dog senior-16 years and up
2 dog junior-10 years to 16 years*
1 dog senior-13 years and up
1 dog junior-5 years to 12 years
*Drivers in the 2 dog junior class
between the ages of 10 years and 12
years of age must prequalify. Pre-
qualifying will be held on a date
in the fall preceding the new race
season. Every effort will be made to
accomodate these children.
12. Junior drivers under 8 years of age must
wear protective head gear.
START AND FINISH:
1. Starting position will be determined by a
draw.
2. Front of the rig/sled will determine the
start point of the team.
3. A late team will be held to the end of
the class and started with a new time.
4. All teams must come to a complete stop
at the start line.
5. All teams will start at one minute
intervals.
6. A team not clearing the chute before the
next team starts may be disqualified.
7. A team may receive help in the start
chute in handling the dogs.
8. The finish of a team will be determined
by the first dog crossing the finish
line.
In the event a loose team or dog crossed
before their driver, the time will be
determined by the driver crossing the finish
line. Any driver accepting a ride with
another team or trail vehicle will be
considered disqualified.
ON THE TRAIL:
1. A team and driver must run the full
marked course.
2. If a team leaves the trail a driver must
return the team to the trail where it
left it from.
3. The trail shall be marked as follows:
A) RIGHT TURNS will be marked by two (2)
RED markers to the right hand side of
the trail slightly before the turn.
B) LEFT TURNS will be marked by two (2)
RED markers on the left side of the
trail slightly before the turn.
C) STRAIGHT AHEAD will be marked by one
(1) BLUE marker on either side of the
trail but generally on the right.
D) CAUTION will be marked by an ORANGE
and BLACK marker.
E) 1/2 MILE TO FINISH will be posted
with a sign indicating such. This
is a NO RIGHT OF WAY ZONE. In coming
teams must be given the right of way
by outgoing teams however.
4. A driver may ride, pedal or run with the
rig/sled.
5. A driver accepting a ride on anything
but his own rig/sled is disqualified.
6. Any dog unfit to continue may be left
with trail help without penalty.
7. Once out of the starting chute, handlers,
trail help or others help is limited to
holding the rig/sled except in the case
of a loose dog/team or a team so
unmanageable as to create a hazard or
injury.
8. A driver may request assistance from the
trail help, otherwise trail help should
stand quietly out of the way.
PASSING:
1. When teams are passing in opposite
directions on a single trail:
A) The team traveling downhill has the
right of way.
B) On level ground the incoming team has
the right of way.
2. When one team intends to pass another,
the passing driver may request the right
of way by calling TRAIL.
3. The overtaken team shall make way for
the passing team by moving to one side
of the trail and by slowing or stopping
if requested by the passing driver.
4. Once a team has been passed, that team
must allow the passing team a two team
lead before proceeding at full speed.
5. A driver may only call TRAIL once on any
given team.
6. If a passing team tangles, as a result of
the pass, the driver may not hold the
passed team for more than thirty (30)
seconds so that he may untangle his team.
7. A driver coming upon two (2) or more
stopped teams may pass all such teams.
Teams that are stopped shall allow that
team to pass.
8. No team may call TRAIL in the last half
(1/2) mile of the race.
RESPONSIBILTY AND SPORTSMANSHIP:
1. All drivers shall be responsible for the
conduct of their dogs, handlers and
themselves.
2. Common sense and good sportsmanship shall
prevail on and off the trail.
3. All litter and dog droppings must be
cleaned and removed before leaving your
parking area.
4. Abuse of a dog with or without an
implement WILL NOT BE TOLERATED and is
prohibited.
RULES AND VIOLATIONS:
1. Anyone wishing to make a complaint
against another driver may do so to the
race marshal or the committee.
2. Any decision by the race marhal will be
enacted before the awards ceremony. All
persons involved in the complaint will
be notified of the decision before the
awards ceremony.
3. Posted times are official. Descrepancies
must be reported to the race marshal
before the awards ceremony. If changes
are made all parties involved will be
notified.
4. The race marshal's decisions are final.
FAILURE TO ADHERE TO THESE RULES AND REGULATION MAY RESULT IN DISQUALIFICATION AND/OR LOSS OF FUTURE RACE PRIVILEGES!
