2000 PIAA Championships-A Close One! Ladies Finish 2nd!
The Lady Tigers entered the PIAA Championships as the best team in the West. We were the defending PIAA Champs. Could we do it again? We were not the favored team by outsiders looking on but in our hearts we knew we could make a run for the title once again. We were young but the desire was there! Watching the race, it was tough to tell whether or not we pulled it off. It was neck and neck with Parkland, a team from the East. When the final scores came in, the Lady Tigers came up 18pts. short and brought home the Runner-up trophy. But fear not. They are ALL back in 2001!!
2000 PIAA Championships - Stephanie Madia Finishes 2nd!
Junior, Stephanie Madia lived up to expectations once again as she finished 2nd behind Paige Miller. With about 1/2 mile to go Stephanie came down the final hill in 4th place. Lauren Bricker from Hempfield was in 2nd and was fading fast. Steph turned on the burners and past Katie Haterstad and Bricker to bring home the silver!
1999 PIAA Championships DE JEVU Girls win 2nd PIAA Title!
Expectations are often hard to live up to. But the 1999 Lady Tigers not only lived up to the expections of winning their third WPIAL Title and second State Title but they did it without being 100% healthy! As the season progressed doubt began to creep into the girls minds. Hucko had mono, Dis hadn't been feeling well, Bart had a strained hamstring and our number three runner from last year, Caitlin Jones, was out with a bad knee. How could any team survive all these adversities let alone win another State Title? Most teams wouldn't, but the NAXC Lady Tigers aren't most teams! They were not going to throw in the towel that easily! Getting Huck and Bart some rest and getting Dis on medication was the best we could hope for. It proved to be enough. The determined Lady Tigers gave all they had and came home with their second consecutive PIAA Championship!
1999 PIAA Championships NA Boys BEST IN THE WEST
The season began with Sabad telling the guys that there were
five teams that could win the WPIAL title. As the season progressed it became apparent that Baldwin was the team to beat. Sabatos kept telling the guys that they weren't out of it. He said "Baldwin only has five guys. If one of them lets down and we run well, we can beat them". At the WPIAL Championship the Tigers gave it their best but saw Baldwin capture the title with NA finishing second. We had one more chance...States. Could we win States? Probably not but our goal was to finish in the top five. Race day. The guys just learned of the girls' victory. They were going to do their best to make sure Sabatos' last State meet was successful all around! After a hard race they anxiously awaited the results. They were in. NA and Baldwin ...223 points. A tie! In order to break the tie the officials went back to the sixth place finisher. Charles Scheerbaum's place of 129 broke the tie. NA fourth, Baldwin fifth! "I kept telling the guys that our consistency and our ability to pack would do it for us. Baldwin finally had a guy let down and our pack attacked and came home the BEST IN THE WEST" said Sabatos.
