On a beautiful fall day, the Mustangs advanced to the State Tournament with 2 victories at Regionals in the Loveland Fairgrounds complex. Seeded # 13 in 5A, the Mustangs faced a scrappy Cherokee Trail (#20 in 5A) in the opening game. Ponderosa scored a solo run in the 2nd inning and two more runs in the 3rd inning to take a 3-0 lead. Cherokee Trail fought back with a solo run in the 4th inning and another in the top of the 7th, but could not get closer than the 3-2 final score, sending the Mustangs to the Regional Championship round. Facing #4 seed, Chatfield, the Mustangs jumped to an early 2-0 lead in the top of the 2nd inning. A solo homer in the 3rd increased the Mustang lead to 3-0, which held up until the 6th inning. Chatfield bunched together a hit, a Mustang error and 3-run homer to tie the game in the bottom of the 6th. Neither team scored in the 7th inning and the game went into extra innings. Ponderosa put the pressure on in the 8th inning scoring 2 runs on 2 hits and 2 Chatfield errors to take a 5-3 lead. Chatfield went quietly in the bottom of the 8th, giving the Mustangs the win and the Regional Championship. The 2 wins improved the Mustangs record to 16-5 overall, and a #9 seed in the State Tournament, where they'll face Rocky Mountain on Friday at 10:00am.

With a playoff berth on the line, the Msutangs took care of business with a 3-1 win over Douglas County on Friday evening. In the season's final home game at Sedillo Field, the Mustangs win earned Ponderosa a spot in the Regional Tournament next weekend in Loveland. Excellent pitching kept DC off the scoreboard until the 5th inning when the Huskies scored their lone unearned run on two hits and a Ponderosa error. The Mustangs scored 2 runs in the 3rd inning on 3 hits and a sac bunt and another run in the 4th inning on two hits and a sac bunt. The win moves the Mustangs league record to 7-3, good for fourth place in the competitive Continental League, and 14-5 overall for the season. Congratulations, Mustangs, good luck at Regionals !!

Neither team had a very good offensive performance, but the Mustangs made the most of their few hits enroute to a 5-0 shutout victory over cross town foe, Legend. While Legend hardly threatened through the whole game, as they mustered jsut 4 singles, Ponderosa was tyrning their few hits into runs. In the third inning, the Mustnags turned a double, two legend errors and a suicide squeeze into 3 runs to take a 3-0 lead. In the fifth inning, a double, a walk, another suicide squeeze and a wild pitch added two more runs for the Mustangs, increasing the lead to 5-0. The win moved the Mustangs record to 6-3 in league and 13-5 overall, setting up the final game of the regular season against DC to determine the playoff berths and seeding.

Ponderosa struggled on offense and defense Wednesday afternoon, resulting in a tough 8-4 loss to cross town rival Chaparral. The Mustangs committed 3 critical errors and coupled with Chap's 9 hits, the Wolverines never trailed in the game. Chaparral got on the board early with 3 runs in the first inning. Ponderosa answered in the second with a solo run to close the gap to 3-1. In the third inning, the Mustangs scored another run to get within a run at 3-2. Chaparral responded with 2 runs in the bottom of the third to increase their lead to 5-2. While the Mustnags went quietly in the 4th and 5th innings, Chap added another run for 6-2 lead. The Mustangs battled back in the 6th inning with 2 more runs to close with 6-4. But as had been the pattern in this game, Chap answered back with 2 runs to increase the gap to 8-4. In the 7th inning, Ponderosa loaded the bases with no outs, but could not score, ending the game on a strikeout and double play to snuff the rally. The loss moves the Mustang record to 3-3 in Continental League play and 10-5 overall.

In a battle for fourth place and the final playoff spot in the Continental League, the Thunder Ridge Grizzlies and Ponderosa Mustangs squared off Monday evening with much on the line. However, the Mustangs cruised to an easy 10-1 win over the Grizzlies to improve their chances for making the playoffs in two weeks. Ponderosa jumped to an early 2-0 lead in the first inning on three hits. Solo runs were added in the second and third innings to increase the score to 4-0. In clearly their best game of the season so far, the Mustangs put all the pieces together in a dominating 12-0 victory over Castle View. Maybe it was payback for their 6-5 loss to the Sabercats in the Don McCall tournament, but more likely it was the Mustangs starting to come together as a team that's getting better at the right time. Excellent pitching, timely hitting, crafty baserunning and bunting by Ponderosa were all too much for Castle View to handle as they never threatened thoughout the game, limited to just 2 hits. Meanwhile, the Mustangs "got their swing on" early and often, scoring 1 run in the first, 3 runs in the second, 6 runs in the third, and two runs in the fourth to complete the mercy rule win. The victory moves the Mustangs record to 2-1 in League play and 9-3 for the season.

It was a busy afternoon - the heartwarming tribute to the Behn family and Morgan, our fallen Mustang, the TV crew and cameras atop the dugouts, and the Mustangs from Mountain Range bidding to knock off their Mustang counterparts from Ponderosa. But through it all, the Ponderosa Mustangs found a way to win the game, squeaking out a 3-2 victory in the bottom of the seventh inning. With emotions running high from the Behn tribute and maybe some nerves from the TV cameras, Ponderosa started out great, jumping to a 2-0 lead in the first inning on four hits. However, Ponderosa cooled off from there, adding only 4 more hits over the next 5 innings. Meanwhile, Mountain Range was building momentum, scoring an uneraned run in the fourth inning and another run in the fifth inning to tie the score at 2-2. When Mountain Range turned a double play in the bottom of the fifth inning to snuff a Ponderosa rally, momentum was claerly wearing a white and blue jersey. Ponderosa stole the momentum back in the sixth inning as Mountain Range placed runners on 2nd and 3rd base with just one out when Ponderosa executed their own double play with a fly ball and a gunned down runner at the plate turning back Mountain Range's scoring bid. In the bottom of the seventh, a double off the fence and a groundout had Ponderosa's potential winning run at third base with 2 outs, when a wild pitch allowed Ponderosa to score the winning run. Not the classic comeback victory dreams are made of, but a win nonetheless. The victory moves Ponderosa's record to 7-2 on the season as they head into Continental league play laer this week.

Good pitching, good defense, and timely hitting is usually the recipe for a win, and the Mustangs followed that recipe for a 5-3 victory over Arvada West at Sedillo Field in the home opener. A-West jumped to a quick 1-0 lead on an unearned run in the top of the first inning, but the Mustangs grabbed the lead back in the second inning with three runs on 4 hits. Ponderosa increased the lead to 5-1 in the fourth inning scoring two more runs on a walk and two hits including an exciting suicide squeeze bunt executed to perfection. A-West bounced right back in the top of the fifth scoring two unearned runs to close the gap at 5-3. The Cats threatened in the sixth and seventh innings , but that good pitching and good defense shut down the comeback for the win. Great job Mustangs - we like this recipe alot - use it often....

The 2011 Mustangs season opener didn't go the way they had hoped, but at least the Mustangs ended up on the right side of a 4-3 score and started the season with a win. Travelling to Bear Creek, the Mustangs couldn't get much started early, while the Bears scored runs in the first and second innings to grab the lead at 2-0. After a cold rain shower in the third inning, the Mustnags finally woke up and scored 4 runs in the top of the fifth inning on 4 hits and a sac fly to take the lead at 4-3. The pesky Bears added another run in the sixth to close the gap to 4-3, where the score remained for balance of the game. So, the 2011 season is upon us, and the Mustangs are 1-0, right where they wanted to be after game 1.
