The Mudcats were formed as an expansion team of registration leftovers in spring of 2006. Paul Hamm was named manager by the league in February 2006. Dustin Smith, Spencer Pham, Zachary Hamm and Cullen Rodgers are original Mudcats. It was a very difficult first season as the Mudcats went 1-8-1 in league play. The first game in Mudcat history was a 25-2 defeat at the hands of the Seadogs. The Mudcats lost in the first round of the playoffs to the Lookouts by a score of 10-8. While it was a difficult season the boys worked hard and were most likely the most improved team in the Farm League by season’s end. Spencer Pham set a Mudcat team record by striking out only once in 28 at bats. Coach Hamm was voted manager of the year by his Farm League peers. The Mudcats were trained by former Philadelphia Phillie outfielder Ron Jones.
The summer of 2006 brought many personnel changes for the Mudcats as Christian Capasso, Tanner Spedden, Matt Boase and Joseph Swisher all became Mudcats. The result was a much more competitive team. The Mudcats were 9-1 in league play. A remarkable turnaround from the spring season. The Mudcats defeated the Storm in the first round of the playoffs and moved on to play for their first championship. The boys were swept in the championship series by the Grasshoppers. Matt Boase and Zach Hamm tied for the league lead with two homeruns each. The team website was also established at www.eteamz.active.com/mudcats.
The fall 2006 season saw the addition of Collin Gunn to the Mudcat roster. The Mudcats played in the rookie division of the Houston Select Baseball League at Baseball USA. The experienced Mudcats dominated the league going 9-1 in league play. The Mudcats defeated the Bellaire Longhorns to become league champions. Cullen Rodgers led the league with three homeruns.
The spring of 2007 saw the addition of Jared Haynes to the Mudcats. The Mudcats went 6-4 in league play. The team defeated the defending league champion Grasshoppers in the first round of the playoffs moving on to the championship series versus the Express. The Mudcats were once again swept in the series losing two straight games to the Express. Jared Haynes hit four homeruns, second most in the Farm League and still a Mudcat team record. This was the third consecutive season that the Mudcats played in the league championship. The Mudcats also played in their first select tournament at Baseball USA going 0-3. The Mudcats were trained by former Houston Astro Gerald Young.
Tanner James joined the Mudcats for the summer 2007 season. This was the “rain out season” as the Mudcats had at least ten games rained out. The Mudcats posted a 6-2 record in league play. The Mudcats defeated the Defenders in the first round of the playoffs. The team then moved on to their fourth consecutive league championship series. And what a series it was! The shorthanded Mudcats played three very close games with the Grasshoppers. Two games were decided by one run and the third game was tied. So after three games and a record of 1-1-1 with a tied cumulative score of 48-48 both teams were declared co- champs. This represented the Mudcats second championship in four tries. The Mudcats were once again trained by Gerald Young.
Cole DeLeon has joined the Mudcats for the spring 2008 season. We are looking forward to a great season of fun baseball and even more player development.
