Macs vs Loyola- GCAC Championship
Maybe another conference title isn't new for No. 5 Mother McAuley, but with a streak like the one the Macs own, why mess with a good thing?
Playing Loyola Academy for the second time in three days and the third time this season, McAuley rolled to a 25-10, 25-16 win at Queen of Peace on Sunday.
The GCAC Red title was the seventh in a row for McAuley and their 30th league crown since 1977.
"It's a tradition that we choose to carry on, and every year we're the team to beat (in conference)," senior Paulina Sambor said. "McAuley always comes out on top."
Heading into regional play this week, the Mighty Macs improved to 25-10 with the win. Maddie McElroy had a game-high seven kills to go with two blocks, while Marykate Styler (3 kills), Bridgett Powell (9 digs) and Kailey Scott (17 assists, 2 kills, 10 digs) all contributed in the win.
Her team peaking at the right time of the year, coach Jen DeJarld loved what she saw over the weekend.
"I'm really pleased with the level we're playing at right now," DeJarld said.
"I had a feeling it was going to take to the middle or the end of October to start putting things together. It's all falling into place right now. We're playing our best volleyball right now, and it was a great team effort all weekend being able to play everybody."
Not allowing the Ramblers to go on any prolonged runs, McAuley found itself up 18-9 before Loyola (21-14) was finally able to string more than two points together in the second game.
A kill from Kaitlin Mohr and two kills from Shannon Sullivan cut Loyola's deficit to six and brought the crowd back into the game.
Off the bench came McAuley sophomore Lizzy Scanlon, who delivered two powerful kills to regain the momentum. Loyola responded with a kill from Hailey Merk, but the Ramblers got no closer.
"We're really calm, cool and collected in pressure situations," McElroy said with a smile.
Two Loyola attacks went out of bounds and a service error pushed McAuley to the win.
Sunday's opener featured a balanced McAuley attack, with the Mighty Macs jumping out to a 12-4 lead as five different players had kills.
Also taking advantage of nine Loyola errors, the Mighty Macs cruised in the first game, finishing it out with a 6-0 run.
"Our girls are just really quick and jump well," DeJarld said. "Our hitting has really stepped up, and our setter, Kailey Scott, has been a difference-maker in putting the ball exactly where the hitters need it to be. She's come such a long way with her placement and decision making."
