Game Write-ups!

September 9th, 2012
The U18s traveled to Madison High Point field and took on the Regent Soccer Club. With 17 players, Monroe had a bench of six subs to assist in wearing down their opponent. At 6:30 into the game, Monroe continued to pressure the Regent defense. Gabby took a shot with her left foot that ended up being a perfect pass across the goal mouth. And Maddie Kallgren was right there to gently pass the ball into the net for the first (and only) goal of the game! It certainly looked like there would be more celebration of goals, but our shots and timing were just a little off. Other players at forward included Payton (8th Grader), Lez'lee, Maddie Knutson, and Tylar. The "winger" players included Shannon, Kylie (both 9th graders), Emily and Kathryn. The middle of the field was controlled most of the time by Sam, Hannah (both 8th Graders), Amy Tylar and Maddie Knutson.
While offense scores the goals (and we got one in 90 minutes), the defense won the game. Defenders included Sam, Hannah, Lez'lee, Leeza, Jessie, Allie and Shyanna (with the shutout!!!). Our next game is Sunday at Honey Creek at 3:30. Hope to see you all at 3:00, and be sure to bring the sunshine again!!!

The U19 Team played Sun Prairie under beautiful blue skies at Monroe Honey Crerek, and came away with their second win in as many games.. All the scoring took place in the first half in the 4-0 victory. At 1 minute into the game, Gabby passed the ball across the goal mouth where Shannon came in and scored her first goal of the season! Way to be in the right spot Shannon!!! Eight minutes later, Maddie Knutson made a nice pass to Maddie Kallgren who finished the play with a nice shot abd goal! At 19 minutes, Maddie Kallgren took a shot that bounced off a Sun Prairie player into their goal to make the score 3-0! Then just before the half, Hannah Calaway launched a bomb from about 35 yards out that came down to the keeper. The ball jammed the keeper's finger and slowly rolled into the goal for the final score of the half (and game)!
In the second half, the girls played different positions. Unfortunately, 11 minutes into the second half, Maddie Kallgren was injured (left knee). Hopefully she is OK. They finished out the second half with another win and shutout! Next game will be in TWO weeks, Sept 30th at noon. Practice still on Monday and Wednesdays.

September 30th, 2012

Game 3 was against the Madison Celtics who were coming to Monroe with 1 win and 2 ties record (good for 1st place).  But our ladies planned on giving them a game on this beautiful Sunday!  All the team was there except for Shyanna and Tori.  Right at 11 minutes, Maddie Kallgren passed the ball off Gabby Ludwig’s back that went toward the goal.  Gabby was quick to get to the ball and beat the keeper for Monroe’s first goal and 1-0 lead.  While there would be pother opportunities in the first half, the game was 1-0 into half time.

The second half began like the first with Monroe on the attack immediately.  At 3 minutes and from her Stopper position, Lez’lee Foley took the ball to her left and down the field.  She beat the sweeper and then took a beautiful left footed shot that beat the keeper and made the score 2-0!  With 42 minutes to go, there was a handful more opportunities, but this game finished up 2-0 (the good guys!!!).

October 14, 2012  Game #5, last home game of the 2012 season

Early in the morning of October 14th, the two team coaches exchanged emails concerning the ominous weather we were having (steady rain showers). Al decided to give the game a go and get this one played considering that the weather did not appear to have lightning and thunder associated with it. Well, the weather was still down right crappy! But the game went on as scheduled.

And from the opening kick-off, Monroe took the ball and passed it right through the flat-footed defense with Maddie Kallgren passing to Gabby Ludwig, and Gabby finishing with the goal. Did you hear that this occurred with less than 20 seconds into the game! Sure was exciting to see!!!

At 5 minutes in, Emily made a really nice pass to spring Maddie Kallgren to open space, and Maddie scored the second goal of the game. The teams kept the play in the middle of the field for the next 25 minutes. Outside Mids Shannon Rabotski, Kylie Kundert, Emily Frankowski and Kathryn Anderson kept the pressure on their marks. Center mids Maddie Knutson and Amy Gogin kept feeding the ball through the middle or out wide. But the defense did a great job at shutting down all attempts to enter Monroe’s third of the field. With Sam Marty and Hannah Calaway pulling off a great execution of the double stopper, Leeza Foley and Jessie Farrar working the marking back positions and Lez’lee Foley working the sweeper position to a science, they kept much of the pressure of their keeper Gwen Ambrose.

At 36 minutes, Maddie Kallgren intercepted a ball and took it right in and beat the keeper to make it 3-0. At 39 minutes, Emily Frankowski passed through the middle to Gabby, who scored her second of the game. And then at 42 minutes, Maddie Kallgren was assisting yet a third goal to Gabby Ludwig to make the score at the half 5-0.

The girls tried to get warm and stay dry under Troy Ludwig’s tent (Thanks Troy). All we wanted was the next 45 minutes to go by quickly so we could get out of Honey Creek ASAP and get to the warmth of our cars and eventually homes. Through 5 games, the girls are 4-1 and are sitting in first place of the Classic-B standings. There are three games left, with next Sunday’s game at Bakken Park in Cottage Grove at 2:00. Hopefully we can have a nicer weekend weather wise and enjoy the play of our girls!

Fall '11 Twisters

Sept-11, '11

Beautiful day for soccer at Honey Creek Park on the ten year anniversary of 9/11 as the Monroe HS Classic team took on the Platteville Power squad in a U18 battle.  From the beginning, Monroe applied steady pressure from Emily Frankowski, Maddie Kallgren and Gabby Ludwig, but that first goal of the season seemed to always be missing the goal or kicked to their keeper.  At 19 minutes, Platteville applied pressure and was able to drop one in over Whitney Disch.  But now the defense was beginning to communicate and inform their teammates who needed to be covered.  This really helped bring some calm to the back.
At 27 minutes with Monroe applying more pressure, Sofi had a decent opportunity to take a shot from the left side of the goal.  But rather than take the shot, she passed to an open Emily who notched the first score for Monroe and tied the game at 1-1.  You could sense that more goals were just a couple plays away!  At 36 minutes, Hayley fed a pretty pass from the right side to an open Maddie Kallgren.  This time, Maddie's shot found the back of the net and gave Monroe that 2-1 lead!  And that is the way the game would go to halftime.
Sofi had to leave for work at half, but before she left, she gave the girls a positive pep talk and set them out for the second half.
The second half saw Monroe again apply solid pressure.  At the 56 minute mark, Maddie Kallgren fed a ball to Gabby Ludwig who shot and scored her first goal of the season!  Nice teamwork on that score!  But just two minutes later, Platteville took a shot that seemed destined to find the goal, but the defense cleared the ball just before crossing the line... or so we thought!  Monroe moved the ball up the field where Maddie Kallgren was able to score!  But wait a minute, it was ruled that the Platteville shot crossed the goal line making the score 3-2.  But that would be as close Platteville would get to tying the game.
At 63 minutes, Monroe was out to break this game wide open.  Gabby had the ball right in front of the goal with a defender closing in.  She made a great pass out to Hayley Keene who shot and scored to make it 4-2.  But by now, Platteville had been worn down and our 8th grader Maddie Kallgren was going to take over.  Maddie notched three more scores at 70, 80 and 89 minutes to bring the final tally to 7-2 Monroe.  Awesome first game performance girls.  From the offense getting their shots, midfielders feeding the ball up field, and the defense and keeper Whitney stopping nearly all of the Platteville attacks, this was a solid win for Monroe against a team that they will most likely see in the Spring.  There will be a rematch at Platteville later in the season, so hopefully the girls can do it again!
