7TH GRADE BOYS FINISH IN TOP 4 AND QUALIFY FOR USSSA NATIONALS
The Missouri Rockets 7th grade boys played real well in the Adidas tournament this weekend and qualify for the USSSA Nationals in Indianapolis, Indiana. The Rockets went 4-2 in the tournament losing both games to the Mid West Magic. The Rockets also beat two very good teams in the tournament, the PAL Magic and the St. Louis Gateway.
The Rockets first game was against the Pal Magic which they defeated 51-46. The Rockets held the lead for the whole game and Justin Biermann sealed the game with a 3 point play. The game was led by Biermann who had 15 points, Dylan Clay and Ryan Courtois also played real well Clay had 14 and R. Courtois had 12. Jeremy Stumpe also contributed with 4 points and some big plays on defense. Cody Birkner, Brian Borgmann, and Scott Byrne each had 2 points in the victory over the Magic.
The Rockets second game was against the St. Louis Hawks who was no match for the Rockets as they defeated them by 11 points. The Rockets were led by Ryan Courtois and Dylan Clay who combined for 29 points. R. Courtois had 15 points, Clay had 14 points, Birkner 7 points, Borgmann 6 points, Biermann 5 points and Stumpe with 3 points. The Rockets won 50-39.
The Rockets third game was against the Mid West Magic who blew out the Rockets 65-49. The Magic was a very good team but we played terrible and it showed up in the score. The Rockets were led by Dylan Clay who was the only force on offense in the first half and Justin Biermann was very good in the second. Clay had 15, Biermann 12, R. Courtois 10, L. Courtois 8, Stumpe & Birkner each had 2 points.
The Rockets first game in the single elimination tournament was against the St. Louis Hawks. The Rockets played bad in the first half and just didn't play hard at half time the score was tied at 19. In the second half the Rockets were a whole different team and ended up winning by 11, 48-37. In the first half the only bright spot for the Rockets was Brian Borgmann who had 10 points and played very well. Ryan Courtois had a great second half after a bad first where he just wasn't giving effort. R. Courtois 13, Borgmann 10, Stumpe 8, Clay 7, Birkner 4, and Beirmann & L. Courtois each had 3 points.
The Rockets second game in the tournament was against Gateway. The Rockets played real well against Gateway and it showed as they won 39-33. Everyone played good against Gateway as Biermann & R. Courtois both had 10, and Clay had 9. Also with a big game was Cody Birkner who hit 2 three's and scored on a layup and had 8 points. Scott Byrne was the only other Rocket player to score in the game which was a big lift for him because he was playing against Washington teammate Suggs.
The Rockets play the semifinals against the Mid West Magic who started out the game on a 19-0 run. The Rockets fought back and were only down by 3 at half time thanks to the play of Justin Biermann and Dylan Clay who were the only players to score in the first half as they combined for 21. The Rockets kept it close the rest of the game and ended up losing 36-48. Biermann 14, Clay 11, Birkner 6, R. Courtois 4, and Stumpe 1.
I think the Rockets played great this weekend and everyone contributed to getting to the final four and qualifying for Nationals. I think that one thing the boys are gonna have to learn is that you have to play hard the whole game. The games are gonna be fast and physical and that is just part of playing over the summer.
