Mill Valley Little League goes green.
We live in a ridiculously beautiful and environmentally conscious community, and MVLL is going to do its part to keep it that way. This season we are announcing a “Green Initiative” that focuses on carpooling, recycling, and our cool new solar powered scoreboard. We hope these efforts will set a good example for our players and can be part of our “give back” to our community. Here’s the scoop:
GOING SOLAR
This season you will notice that MVLL has become the first sports venue we know of to have a Solar Photovoltaic System for our Scoreboard. Through our investment and private donations we now are able to move a major source of MVLL energy demand “off the grid”. Next time you’re at Boyle, check out the new solar array constructed on the restroom roof in the outfield between the Minors and Majors Diamonds. MVLL is now selling power back to PG&E! (Fred has assured us that just as Stefanos’ solar-powered ovens still crank out pizzas on rainy days, we’ll be able to keep the scoreboard lit up even during this current rainy cycle!)
RECYCLING
We want the footprints we leave to be cleat marks around bases rather than the carbon footprint that comes from the amount of waste we generate, and so we are asking everyone to avoid bringing liquids of any kind in disposable plastic containers. Please have your players use their own washable sports bottles to games. Use of paper or washable beverage containers during games and for after-game snacks will make a big difference – and could result in the reduction/elimination of several thousand disposable plastic containers during the 2012 season! To help with this, we’ve repaired the water fountains in the Dugouts at both Boyle Diamonds. We encourage all players to include their own personal sports bottles in their gear bags and use the fountains to re-fill as necessary.
Please be sure to clean-up after every game. We all can do a better job of picking up after ourselves at Boyle and the other fields we use. There are recycling containers provided by MV Refuse at each Boyle Snack Shack.
CARPOOLING
As part of our use permit from Parks & Rec, we commit to strongly encourage carpooling and the use of alternative (non-car) transportation to games and practices. We owe it to Mill Valley, and the neighbors who surround these parks, to take this commitment seriously. Please work with your Coaches and Team Parent to establish carpool arrangements. Don’t show up without someone else in your car!!
On behalf of MVLL, we're hoping you all will keep these things in mind as we look ahead to the 2012 Season. With your help and commitment, we can make a big difference! And perhaps (though it is not a quid pro quo), Mother Nature will cut us a break on the weather…
