Big Day Out...Metro cleans up on the day....part 1
Week 9: Lions wins....It started in the morning with a great team effort from the Juniors who without many of their weapons walked away with a 10-8 victory over th Under 18s Wildcats.
The game started with the Lions looking dangerous with a lot of big tackles and dazzling runs, still they were plagued by little mistakes which lead to some early turn overs.
Come the 2nd 1/4 the Lions seem to be taking control of the game yet it was the Wildcats who drew first blood with a convicing 80 yard touchdown drive just before half time leaving the Lions trailing by 8.
Early the 3rd quarter Jann Pilisi within a tackle was able to off load to Junior Pritchard who then ran a 45 yard touchdown.
Jann Pilisi then ran in the 2pt conversion with a QB sneak up the middle.
The Lions dominated the rest of the game with a string of punishing defensive series and sacks which lead to a 2pt safety by Jessie Pilisi.
Having many of the players still on holiday left majority of the lads playing both ways, not to mention many of the rookies giving out their best performance yet and stepping up to the challenge.
The coaching staff and supporters were rewarded with a performance that warranted a victory. GO METRO!!!
Big Day Out...Metro cleans up on the day....part 2
What was started by the Lions Junior Squad on Saturday morning was carried through that same afternoon by the Seniors.
The Lions walked off the field with a 18-08 victory over the Wildcats.
An extremely hot summer afternoon with many of the seniors still away on holiday....the inclusion of Salau, Charlie, and Willie formerly of the Rangers, not to mention the return of the a determined Adam Felix.... set the stage for an interesting and tough game of IRON MAN FOOTBALL.
The Lions came out with guns blazing and lots of big tackles during the first defensive series.
Heat Seeker, Chris Tia and Lazer all setting the standard.
The constant pressure from a determind Lions defensive line with the support of its secondaries meant early turn-overs for the Wildcats.
The offense started with a string of first downs produced by a strong running game from Salau and Richard Tia with the help of a menacing offensive line which included Suavai, the return of Drew at centre and Big Bob.
It was not till the second drive of the first quarter that the Lions scored, with Felix thowing a 30 yard pass to Afele Leona who ran 50 yards for the first touch down of the day.
Great defensive efforts from Drew hooking up with Chris Tia to shut down the Wilcats running game and individual efforts from Charlie and the secondaries kept the Wildcats out of the red zone in the first half.
In the 3rd quarter the summer heat was not only relenting, but emotions on the feild were running high also. This lead to some minor set backs with flags being thrown at both camps. Once the Lions were able to gain some composure they were rewarded with a gut wrenching drive down field which lead to a touch down pass thrown by Adam Felix to wide receiver Cory Meleisea giving the Lions a 12 point lead.
Constant words of encouragement and productive instructions from Head coach Alf Stowers during the game inspired the Lions to make plays when needed, nothing more apparent than the interception/defensive touch down by veteran linebacker Andrew Pilisi late in the 4th quarter deminishing any hope of a Wildcat comeback final score 18-08 LIONS WIN!!!.
The victory could have not been achieved if it weren't for the efforts of the Lions support staff running on the water when needed, giving physio therapy on the sideline then taping up the players to get them back on the field.
Players going both ways even though they were hurt and tired; everyone played an important part....Shot Metro!!!
Lions lead the way for the Vulcans against the Cowboys..
The Aucland Vulcans Representative Squad got on the way to a good start by defeating a tough Central Cowboys in overtime last weekend 1/03/2003 at the Rifle Range Park in Hamliton.
Defence played a big part in both camps keeping the the score line in single digits.
The Cowboys were able to hold out the Vulcans offence in the first overtime series.
The Vulcans defensive unit were then able to capitalise on a Cowboys mistake during their 1st overtime series resulting in a fumble recovery by our own Adam Felix, who then threw a lateral pass to Metro's Corey Meleisia who went on to score the winning touch down..final score 13-07 Vulcans.
Congratulations go out to Jason Vaka Vulcans Defensive Player of the day, Corey Meleisia Vulcans Offensive Player of the day and our very own Adam Felix Vulcans Most Valuable Player of the day....Shot Metro
Lions lead the way for the Vulcans against the Stormers...
Two weeks ago it was the Metro seniors who had a great game against the Central Cowboys as Senior Vulcan's, this time around it was the Metro Juniors who were given the opportunity to contribute to a Vulcan win.
Lead by our very own coach Andrew Pilisi the Auckland under18 Vulcan's defeated the visiting Wellington Storm at the classic annual Thunder Bowl clash which was played at Bay Roskill Reserve. Both teams were feeling the pressure early on, and no doubt were feeling each other out during the first series.
Wellington had got to a good start with a solid running game by going to the outside, before the Vulcan's defence were able to take charge.
The first half of the game was dominated by the defence on both teams. Drama unfolded late in the 2nd quarter with the Vulcans successfully defending their goal line during the last dying minutes of the half.
The drama continued mid way of the 3rd quarter when Wellinton were denied a 70 yard punt return touch down, due to a defensive lineman hitting the Vulcans center during the snap. The events had stirred the Vulcans offence, who were then able to put together a string of first downs; with the momentum building the offence were rewarded with a touch down pass late in 3rd quater.
The turn of events inspired the Vulcan's defence to go out and demolish what little offence the Wellinton Storm had left. Constant pressure from the D line, with everyone swarming to the ball and the safeties showing some patience meant early turn overs for the visitors at crucial moments of the game. Vulcan's win 6-0.
Congratulations go to Philip Tele'a who was rewarded the under18 Thunder Bowl offence player of the day, as well as Junior Pritchard who received the under18 Thunder Bowl defence player of the day.
Much love goes out to all the Metro Lions who played on Saturday,
John Palavi and Junior Pritchard were menacing on the field from start to finish which kept the Storm from running up the middle.
Constant pressure from Paula Maumau, Nick Palavi and Max Stowers gave Wellington no chance of gaining composure. Shiloh Pilisi and Sione Taka must have been inspired by Heat Seaker and Corey Meleisia with his big hits that helped keep Wellington out of the red zone.
Offence consisted of running backs Billy Timaloa, Tux O line Tupelu, Phillip, Joel, and Jonathon with receiver John Maumau and Quarter Back Jann Pililsi. (Head Coach Andrew Pilisi).
Shout outs go to Andrew Asaua, Mike Savelio, Richard Tia and Janitta Pilisi from Metro who all helped with the Auckland Vulcan's Squad.
Good Luck ....
Our thoughts and best wishes go out to the Tia brothers, Richard and Chris as well as Jason Vaka of the Metro Lions who fly out this weekend 22nd March 2003 to the States for the second leg of the Arena Football League try outs held in Chicago. The Lads will be travelling with Joseph of the Spears and Albert and Andrew of the Wildcats who will represent the New Zealand American Football Association and hopefully be successful on their quest.
Let us hope that they come up trumps for a placing on one of the Arena Football teams. The lads held their own fundraising events by selling suppers and even putting on socials to get to Chicago, and with that we want to wish you all the best, we know you've all worked hard to get there. Shot Uso's!!!!

Am currently based in Palm Beach which is a pretty exclusive part of Florida. Will be travelling up the East Coast of the States for Summer ,going to Washington ,New York, and Newport amongst other places. I looked up the results on Metros sight ,and was pleased to see that the season sounded like a good one ,even though there was no Gold Medal.Have been watching heaps of Football on TV ,with Arena games and also, the European NFL games.
Send my regards to everyone,
Martin.

A recap on Season 2003-2004
"KIWIBOWL XXII SLIPS AWAY...maybe next year"
"there is no shame in losing...only in giving up..."
Metro Lions congratulates the Wildcats under 18 and Hamilton Hawks seniors on their well deserved KiwiBowl victories on Saturday 14th Feb at Bay Roskill.
Our thanks to all those wonderful people who supported the club this season. It was great that the weather decided to shine on what we had hoped would be a day of history making for Metro, alas it was not to be.
But thats life, and life goes on.
To all the Metro players, be proud of what we accomplished this season, hold your heads high, and look forward to next season.
Take comfort in our other achievements this season:
- we got our womens team up and running...The Mighty Lioness
- we administered, coached, managed, fed, watered and provided 1st aid to not 1 but 3 teams despite our limited resources...
- After 25 years, our club is still strong, we remain faithful to the Black and Silver, we are the backbone of the NZAFA competition.
This season was just a glimpse of what we can really do, imagine the possibilities.
