William and Coach Derby in Oregon 2006

Fiamacho's son goes back to the US
Congratulations to the Hodgman family and Willie of Metro who have successfully secured a placement with Lakeridge High, Oregon, United States. Yes, the Hodgman family went out and worked extremely hard to create a pathway for their oldest son to return to the United States specifically to play football. Let’s face it you can get an excellent education here in New Zealand. Some of you may remember number 76 who played on both sides of the ball as nose tackle or right offensive tackle as an instrumental part of the Lions Colts championship team. His aggression on the footy field cost him half the game in the 2006 07 final having to start at halftime for being sent off in the semi against North Harbour (he hit the QB after the whistle blew the play dead and I am talking about the left hook)Yep I am still scratching my head on that one... what was he thinking.

Yet from a recent interview with William's dad Mr Geoff Hodgman aka fiamacho... Aggression was one of the many attributes that singled out William from the others. Aggression and Willies high work ethic sets him apart from the hundreds of other athletes at the various combines and football camps that William had attended. Thats what the coaches commented on, how William was able to keep going, keep training and maintain an extremely high level of intensity with each drill with out compromising his form. Another key point brought out was the punching power and speed that William posesses and his ability to use various puching styles to hurt those opposing him and hurt them he did. Seems like in a place of lots of strong and fast athletes there are not many players that have controlled aggression.

What some may not know is that since his return from completing his sophomore year with Hunter High in Utah the Hodgman family have been pursuing many avenues to ensure Willie returns to the US to play out his junior year. Since the end of the Unified football season, William has been in the gym, running, even getting together with the Clayton boys and going through various hitting drills as well as participating the various linemen camps, including the US army Combine which was held in Houston earlier this year (note that the combine was by invitation only).

This is the write up on Mr Hodgman posted on the scout.com site…

Scout.com first learned of William Hodgman through the Brian Derby line camps that were being held in the state of Oregon. Hodgman, a current 9th-grader at the time, had made a visit out to Oregon from his home country - New Zealand - with a goal in mind - to play college football in the United States.

Well, the next piece to that puzzle has recently been filled in, as the Hodgman's let us know that William will be coming back to the states in the summer to give high school football in America his best shot.

"William has officially been accepted in to Lakeridge High School (Lake Oswego, Ore.) for the up and coming school year as an exchange Student, he will be enrolling as a Junior," Hodgman's father Geoff told Scout.com. "We are really happy that he will be there this season and hopefully he can be there for his senior year."

Hodgman participated in the U.S. Army All-American combine this past January in San Antonio, and he's getting an early start on trying to figure out the in-state competition. He'll be attending camps at Oregon State, Oregon and Boise State, as well as the Eugene Nike camp and the Just Win! camp over on the Hawaiian island of Maui.

"He is flying out next week to attend football camps for about four weeks and then flying home on the 1st of July so that he can attend orientation here in New Zealand," Geoff said. "It is a requirement of the exchange program that he is on."

The younger Hodgman has grown quite a bit since we first saw him last August. At that time he was 6-foot-3 and 270 pounds. Now he has grown an inch and put on nearly fifty pounds. Right now he considers himself a defensive tackle first, and an offensive lineman second.

There's no question the story of William Hodgman and his time in the states is just beginning. We'll be on top of it to follow his recruitment every step of the way.
