Metro Boston wins Silver; falls to BABC in Gold medal game
East Boston, MA - Metro Boston fell to BABC in the Gold Medal game of the Massachusetts AAU State Championship Game 98-84 held at East Boston High School.

According to Coach Mo, "It was a good game for 27 out of the 32 minutes for us. We had a slight mental lapse at the end of the first half and dug our selves into a hole. Otherwise we kept the game even and/or even out played them at times. I'm sure the people in attendance enjoyed this game. They got a chance to see two heavyweights compete.

I give them (BABC) credit and take nothing away from them. Marshall Strickland (Baltimore, MD) and Torin Francis (Tabor Academy) played a great game for them. They stepped up and made the big plays when they needed it most. They also made their free throws down the stretch."

Mo goes on to add, "My team's greatest attribute is their determination. Despite the score and the remaining time on the clock, the kids on this team never quit. I'm pretty sure when we fell behind by 18 points at the half, they (BABC) thought the game was over.

We fought back in the second half and cut their lead to single digits. Dorien, Anthony, Matt, Corey, Dwight, Willie and the rest of the guys gave it everything they had. Unfortunately, the big deficit at the end of the first half was the difference.

It was great to have the kids' relatives and parents watching them play. We're usually on the road; places like Philly, Connecticut and New York and most of the parents don't get a chance to see their child play. I'm proud of these guys. Especially of the family support we receive.

I'm proud of every single player on this roster. We came in to this tournament as 'the unknown' and finished with a silver medal. The kids should be proud of themselves. The Juniors get to leave with their heads held high and finished on a high note (silver medal). The sophomores, we'll, they've got to get ready for their state tournament next month."

Metro Boston falls to BABC in pool play
East Boston, MA - Metro Boston fell to BABC by a final score of 77-71. The difference in the game: Torin Francis (Tabor Academy).

According to Coach Mo, "I'm tired of these close games. Games we should've and could've won. We gave them that game. The difference was Torin (Francis). The big guy played a great game for them. He hit his free throws when they needed them most and ran the floor well. A few other things killed us, such as the rookie official. I asked him continously to keep an eye out for the 3 seconds in the paint and the 5 count. Not once did he even start the count. Not to mention the blown calls he had. Torin was getting NBA calls throughout the game.

But I can't put the blame entirely on the official. That's never been my style. There were things in our control that we could've done to seal the win for us. Unfortunately for us, they started the game early (15 minutes prior to scheduled tip-off time) because my big guys weren't all there at 15 minutes to 2:00 pm. They showed up late. I'll deal with the parents individually.

Also, the numerous unforced turnovers we had. We must have had at least 12-15 of them. We didn't handle the ball well. A few forced shots or forced feeds into the post. Our shots weren't dropping. We must have missed at least 10 uncontested three pointers. That's unusual for us. They literally went in and out the whole game.

Defensively we picked it up in the second half. Dorien (Brown) was big in the post. He must have blocked at least 10 shots. Offensively, he was excellent despite the constant butchering of him. Julius and Rob did pretty good as well. Julius fought hardi n the post for his position.

Willie (Phillips) by himself broke their press continously. The one thing he needs to do is maintain his control. Anthony (Drayton), Matt (Cahill), and the rest of the guards did their job except for the unforced turnovers. We just couldn't handle the ball.

The other guy that did well for them was Stevie (Hailey). Don't get me wrong Will Blaylock did a good job but Stevie handled the ball well, hit the open shot, and hit the open man. He's a pretty good guard. He's an excellent kid. I wish him the best."

The Championship Round schedule and pairing are to come out later this week. More to come on this.....

Metro Boston (Soph) loses in the Final Four
Check out the "Latest News" section to read more about how Metro Boston did at the adidas Hoop Challenge this past weekend hosted by Wayne Simone.

Metro Boston (Soph) fall in the Final Four
Fairfield, CT - Metro Boston (Soph) fell to the CT Select by a final score of 74-62 in the semi-finals of the adidas Hoop Challenge held by Wayne Simone.

On Friday, in pool play, Metro Boston faced and beat the New Haven Clippers and the Jersey Shore Warrions. On Saturday, Metro Boston beat the CT Warriors. On Sunday, in the quarter-finals, Metro Boston beat the NY Ravens by a final score of 62-60.

According to Coach Mo, "Simply put, we ran out of gas. Dwight (Brewington), Dorien (Brown), Corey (Cofield), Rob (Pressey) and a few other guys because they were playing in the Juniors division as well. This was there third game in a row (8:30 a.m. vs NY Ravens; 9:45 a.m. NJ Cyclones (Jrs. division game); 11:00 a.m. CT Select).

All in all we had a great weekend. The kids had an opportunity to be evaluated by recruiting services and college coaches. This was the first time for guys like Greg (Nazarro), Marcus (Jones), Matt (Blue) and Justin (Kesner) to play in front of the college coaches. Also, this won't be there last. We play a pretty long but impressive season. This group went to the Nationals last year as freshmen."

More to come on this later.....

Metro Boston (Jrs) falls in the Elite Eight
Check out the "Latest News" section to find out how Metro Boston did in the adidas Hoop Challenge held by Wayne Simone.

Metro Boston (Jrs.) falls in the Elite Eight
Fairfield, CT - Metro Boston lost to the NJ Cyclones in the Elite Eight on Sunday morning by a final score of 87-75. In pool play games on Friday and Saturday, Metro Boston beat NJ Demons (71-58); CMAC Hawks (74-52); and PK Rocks (61-41). The NJ Demons' game on Saturday night decided the pool winner and who would advance into the playoffs because both teams were 2-0 going into the game.

According to Coach Mo, "We didn't come out to play this game (NJ Cyclones) with the intensity that we should've had in the first half. We made it to the Elite Eight and it felt like to me that the kids were initially comfortable with that. There is no way we can afford to spot an opponent a 34 point lead and expect to win the game. We settled for jumpshots, quick shots and missed easy opportunity shots.

We played much better in the second half. We cut the lead and came as close as 4 points but didn't have enough in the tank to pull off the win. I hope the kids realize that they let one get away. If we play as we're capable of playing, we can compete with anyone. I was upset with a few aspects of the other team but I won't comment on that."

The Metro Boston roster for the CT tournament consisted of #10 Willie Phillips, #11 Matt Cahill, #12 Anthony Drayton, #8 Cedric Phillips, #42 Julius Byrd, #30 George Wright, #35 Corey Cofield, #33 Dorien Brown, #34 Robert Pressey, #24 Dwight Brewington, #4 James French, #32 Antuan Streater, and #21 Chris Landford.

BABC nips Metro Boston at Nate Hurwitz

Weber Invitational News....
Check out the "Latest News" section to see how Metro Boston did at the Charlie Weber Invitational this past weekend (4/06/01 - 4/08/01).

BABC nips Metro Boston at Nate Hurwitz in Charlestown, MA.
Charlestown, MA - BABC Jrs. beat Metro Boston by a final score of 74-72 in the annual Nate Hurwitz tournament held in Charlestown, MA. Metro Boston had a final shot opportunity when Dorien Brown rebounded Torin Francis' missed free throw and heaved a shot from 60 feet away coming up short and falling by two points to BABC.

According to Coach Mo, "Derek Gallegher runs an excellent event. One of the best bargains in the country. In the last four years, we've played in the championship game at least 3 times and won it once.

In regards to the game, my guys played well despite the obstacles. We've played this game much better than we did at Charlie Weber (Villanova, PA) last weekend. The guys came in and believed in the offense. If we make a few more of our free throws (17 for 32) and we win the game, regardless of the officiating.

Anthony (Drayton) rebounded well for a guard. Matt (Cahill) shot the ball well. Dwight (Brewington) and Willie (Phillips) ran the team pretty good. Chris (Landford) played his team role real well. The big guys (Dorien Brown, Julius Byrd, Corey Cofield) rebounded well and were effective in the paint.

My teams' downfalls were the free throw shooting, the one-on-one mentality and Dorien's rustiness. Other than that we were fine. Dorien showed flashes of what he's capable of doing. He'll be ready for the upcoming tournaments. He's clearly one of the best big men in this region.

Anthony, Matt and Dwight kept the wings well balanced. The fans got an opportunity to see some of the future collegiate players coming from this state. I'm sure everyone would agree with me that it was a great game. Everyone in attendance got their monies worth. I hope they enjoyed the game as much as we did."

Metro Boston falls at Weber Invitational!
Villanova, PA - In the opening round of the tournament, Metro Boston beat (CT) Slamma Jamma by a final score of 95-56. According to Coach Mo, "This game we played excellent. We fed the ball into the post. We ran our half court sets. We played as a solid unit. Everyone had an excellent game. Corey Cofield controlled the paint on both ends of the floor. Matt Cahill, Dwight Brewington and Willie Phillips maintained the perimeter well and handled the ball well. The guys off the bench (James French, Cedric Phillips, Chris Landford and George Wright) did an excellent job. It was the best game we played offensively."

In the second game, Metro Boston beat (SC) Topp Sports by a final score of 68-60. According to Coach Mo, "This was the ugliest game and win we've ever had. Only three guys decided to show up and play on the same page. Dwight (Brewington), Matt (Cahill) and Corey had an excellent game. They were the only three players that stuck with the game plan.

The rest of the guys were being selfish, forcing shots and not playing with full effort. This was horrible. I feel bad for those three guys. We had a height advantage and didn't utilize it. We might have run our half court sets at least two good times the whole game. There is no excuse for that. I felt bad for the parents that showed up to see such a horrible display of a game."

In the third game (Sunday), Metro Boston fell to the (NY) Gauchos by a final score of 64-55. According to Coach Mo, "There were three major aspects of this game that I loved. The kids fought back from the horrible showing on Saturday night, we ran our offense for at least 75% of the game and we played more like a unit (team).   We were down 15 points in the third quarter and came back to within 3 points. If we play them on Saturday morning; we win that game. If the kids stayed within the offense for the whole game and made the easy baskets, we win. The game was within reach for all 32 minutes.

The down side was we couldn't finish on the offensive end. We must have blown at least 15 lay-ups, 12 put backs from within 3 feet from the basket and a few free throws. Also, two or three guys still reverted back to Saturday night's ugliness.   The big men put the ball on the floor when they shouldn't have, and a few guys tried to take the game over by themselves. These aspects we'll have to handle this week at practice and our game at the Charlestown Boys and Girls Club."

Coach Mo goes on to add, "Last night I weighed all the pros and cons. I discussed the whole weekend with my girlfriend. Prior to talking with her, my thoughts and feelings weren't positive. I might have gone ahead and said or done something stupid if the kids were right in front of me at that moment and time. She stopped me from talking and reminded me this was our first major tournament of this young year. She told me, 'If you are going to keep kicking yourself, as you did this past weekend, you might as well call off the year. Remember these guys are kids. All very good kids as you tell me. They are learning the game and also have other interests in life. It's not the end of the world. It's just a game. '

She reminded me that we do have many more games scheduled and practice time to get better. We've been practicing only against ourselves for the past month. There's nothing like an actual major tournament to prepare your team and game plan against. All in all, it was a great event. Tough Competition and an opportunity for the kids to showcase their level of talent in front of college coaches."

Metro Boston wins opener!
Charlestown,MA - Metro Boston beat Nashua (NH) at the Nate Hurwitz Tournament on Thursday night.

According to Coach Mo, "It's good we won the game. The bad part is, we played horrible. We didn't rebound the ball well, we committed too many turnovers, and we didn't defend as well as I wanted us to. We'll definitely be working on our defense this week in order to get ready for the Charlie Weber Invitational. "

He goes on to add, "We did do a few things well when we wanted to on Offense. At times, we ran the offense well and sacrificed a few shots for a better shot in either the post or wing. These signs I liked but the unfortunate part was we didn't play a complete game. Out of 40 minutes, we played well for at least 26 minutes. We can't afford to do that down at Charlie Weber."

Latest news on the program
Check out the "Latest News" section for the latest information on the program.

Latest info. on the program!
6'4 Sophomore PG Dwight Brewington (Lynn English H.S.) is turning heads in only his second year in high school. He has been drawing attention from teams in the America East Conference, Atlantic 10 Conference, Big East Conference and Atlantic Coast Conference. Dwight, along with Metro Boston team member 6'5 Junior PF Julius Byrd, helped lead their high school team to the Division II North Championship game before bowing out to Division II State Champions Charlestown High School. In attendance at the Tsongas Arena (Lowell, MA) were various college coaches.

According to Coach Mo, "The funny thing is, he's not the only guy on the team drawing attention from college coaches. A lot of the guys on the team have been drawing attention from every college division since our first national level tournament that we attended two years ago. I'm proud to say and am very thankful of all our sponsors for giving us the opportunity to give a chance to more kids from Massachusetts to be seen by college coaches.

Dwight's been getting the attention ever since he was in the 8th grade with a great class that we had back then in late spring. (That class consisted of current members Dorien Brown (Lynn Classical), Daryl Brooks (West Roxbury), Robert Pressey (Catholic Memorial), and former member Justin Dick (Boston English)).

A firm belief I have is guys playing up in order to get better. Daryl, Dorien and Dwight have been playing two class codes up ever since they first got here. This past fall, all three of them along with 6'6 Sophomore PF/C Corey Cofield (Roxbury Latin) played in the Seniors/Open Division at the Charlie Weber Invitational (MD) and the New York Slam Jam Fest (NY). They were playing against seniors and held their very own, prior to starting their high school sophomore year.

The other guys that have been playing up have been PG 5'11 Willie Phillips, SG 5'11 Anthony Drayton, 5'9 SG James French and 6'5 Julius Byrd. These guys played in the Juniors division all of last year as sophomores. Another guy that's been playing up this past fall was Matt Cahill (Bridgewater-Raynham HS). He joined us last year in the late summer. The experience they gained last year will help us a lot this year."

Coach Mo goes on to add, "The notion in the past has been that you had to play for BABC in order to be seen. That doesn't hold true these days. Although Leo (Papile) does his part and has been doing it for over 15 years, other clubs are now lending a hand to showcase more kids.

In the recent past, the Wildcats showcased Scott Hazelton (UConn) and Anthony Anderson (UMass). Greater Boston showcased Adam Harrington (Auburn). CMAC Hawks showcased Neil Fingleton (UNC). Not to mention the kids Leo has showcased that are playing in college."

Cahill drawing interest!
Matthew "Matt" Cahill has been drawing interest from various colleges (division I&II) in the New England and Mid-Atlantic Coast Region. Matt first participated in the program late last summer. He participated in a few other tournaments that fall (2000). He officially joined the program this spring (March 2001).

According to Coach Mo, "Academically, the kid is as solid as they come. There will be no issues in regards to his GPA or SAT scores. His parents did an excellent job in monitoring his progress and helping him maintain an excellent academic status.

Athletically, I personally feel he has plenty of room to become one of the best guards from this state. Matt's a young 17 year old compared to the kids we go against in his class group. You need to remember, most of the kids we play against are either repeat juniors or post-grads. In do time, Matt will add size and strength to his body. He can only get stronger and better.

Matt's a 6-2 shooting guard for us but at times we play him at point in order for him to develop at both positions. He can defend full length of the floor and rebounds the ball real well for a guard. Most of our guys play out of position for their high school teams because they're the tallest kid in their respective schools.

In regards to his offensive skills, the kid can flat out shoot. He can bury the 3-point shot, beat guys off the dribble, bury the pull up jumpshot and can take it to the rack with the best of them. Don't get caught, this kid can throw it down with ease. My one regret for Matt is he didn't join our program a lot earlier to gain exposure. I know Courtney (Young) tried.

Don't get me wrong, we're as busy as we've ever been and traveling to the events we need to be at. But if he was here a year earlier, their would be 50-100 more schools looking at this kid. This kid is capable at playing at the highest level. The problem with many teams/clubs is that they don't participate in the major events. The kids don't get an opportunity to be seen.

This is where I personally feel we excel. There is merely 1 or 2 other clubs that travel as much as we do and we're not even a sponsored club. We've participated in tournaments during all the evaluation periods. I've called schools on behalf of our kids. I've sent tape(s). Courtney's made calls. We'll put every effort out to showcase our kids.

Last fall Matt missed out on the Charlie Weber tournament in Maryland. That's was major event to be at. There were numerous scouts throughout the gyms. He won't miss that tournament this year. I'll make sure of it!"

AAU Junior Nationals - Orlando, FL
Below are the results from the AAU Nationals held in Orlando, FL.

Saturday (7/28):
Metro Boston lost to the Wisconsin All-Stars by a final score of 93-57.
According to Coach Mo, "We played the game as if we were deers stuck in headlights. The kids seemed to be caught up with the atmosphere. Not to take anything away from Wisconsin because they shot the ball pretty well."

Sunday (7/29):
Metro Boston beat Team Michigan by a final score of 81-69.
According to Coach Mo, "This was probably the most complete game we played on the defensive end. The guards did an excellent job on the perimeter and the post players controlled the boards when we needed them most. Offensively, we struggled because we didn't run our offense."

Monday (7/30):
Metro Boston beat All Ohio-White by a final score of 76-67.
According to Coach Mo, "This was one of the ugliest wins we've had all year. It seemed as if we didn't want to this game to advance. We broke down defensively one to many times. Offensively, same throughout. We did not run the offense."
Note: Metro Boston advances to the AAU National Tournament by placing second in their pool with a 2-1 record.

Tuesday (7/31):
Playoffs:
In the opening round, Metro Boston lost to the Charlotte Aces 83-61.
According to Coach Mo, "We played a tough team. They hit the boards hard. They attacked the basket well. They played aggressive."

Afterwards they faced, Cecil Kirk and lost by a final score of 72-53.

More to come....

Tuesday, August 7
Dwight Brewington - AAU Nationals: All-American
Current Metro Boston member 6'5 sophomore PG Dwight Brewington (Lynn English HS) was selected to the second team AAU Juniors' Nationals tournament team. Dwight competed as a sophomore in this year's Junior's Division. Dwight averaged 20.0 points, 6 assists and 7 rebounds per contest. Other local talent 6'10 Torin Francis (Tabor Academy) was also selected.

According to Coach Mo, "I'm very proud of the kids on this team. They got an opportunity to turn heads and showcase their talent at the national level. I'm proud of the guys for finishing second in their pool and advancing to the National Championship round. We got a tough seed (#3) in the nationals despite finishing second in Massachusetts. Go figure."

He goes on to add, "I'm proud of Dwight. He's a hard working kid. The scary part is the kid's 6'5 and has plenty of areas to improve on. He works hard both off and on the court. He's learned a lot from the Juniors (5'10 PG Willie Phillips, 5'10 SG Anthony Drayton and 6'2 SG Matt Cahill) and is always eager to learn."

The 2001 AAU All-Americans are as follows:

First Team: MVP – Andre Iquodola (Illinois Warriors); DeAngelo Alexander (Athletes First); Rashad Anderson (Tallahassee Wildcats); Daniel Brown (Illinois Wildcats); Elton Brown(Hampton Roads); Shannon Brown (Illinois Warriors); Mario Boggan (Carolina Hornets); Torin Francis (BABC); John Gilchrist (Hampton Roads); Justin Gray (Charlotte Royals); Daevon Haskins (Mount Royal); Eric Hicks (Charlotte Aces); Jeremy Hunt (YOMCA); J.J. Redick (Hampton Roads); Sheldon Williams (Athletes First).

Second Team: Dwight Brewington (Metro Boston); Evan Brock (Georgia Jazz); Greg Brunner(Martin Brothers); Joe Chapman (Illinois Wolverines); Dedrick Finn (Warrick County Wildcats); Will Holoman (Lee Bulls); Jeff Horner (Martin Brothers); Isiah Hunter (Charlotte Royals); Andrew Lavender (All Ohio Red Sophomores); Dwayne Lee (YOMCA); Ryan Moore (Tallahassee Wildcats); Chris Paul (Kappa Magic); Eliot Poole (Illinois Wildcats); Shawn Witherspoon (Team Hoopnuts); Gordon Zastow (Wisconsin All Stars).

Monday, June 11
Gymrat Challenge (NY)
Metro Boston's 17 & Under team fell at the Gymrat Challege in Albany, NY on Memorial Day Weekend. The team finished with a 2-1 record.

According to Coach Mo, "This is a well-run event. I enjoy competing in the GymRat Challenge because you know you'll get good competition and it's well organized. We beat two teams (St. Paul's Crusaders and Capital District All-Stars) by double-digit margins with 8 or less minutes to go in each game. Unfortunately for us, the kids feel they can keep playing down to the level of competition and still pull off the win in the final minutes of the game.

We lost to the the Morris County Bulls (NJ) by 11 points. They beat us to every loose ball. We played very little defense and at times lost our composure. The kids just don't seem to understand that when an opponent stays within reach, they begin to gain confidence and can pull off the upset. I don't mean to take anything away from the Bulls but we didn't come to play.

In the coming weeks, we'll be getting back to the basics. School finals will be done and we can focus on basketball for at least 3-4 weeks."

Tuesday, September 25
Metro Boston falls in Quarterfinals at Charlie Weber!
College Park, MD - Metro Boston fell to the NY Ravens in the Quarter-finals of the Senior division by a final score of 73-59. Metro Boston consisted of: Anthony Drayton (Sr.-Lincoln-Sudbury HS), Willie Phillips (Sr.-East Boston HS), Matt Cahill (Sr.-Bridgewater-Raynham HS), Cedric Phillips (Sr.-East Boston HS), Dwight Brewington (Jr.-Lynn English HS), Matt Blue (Jr.-Bellingham HS), Robert Pressey (MD), Rahsheem Bemson (Sr.-Lynn English HS), Tiatum Brownsmith (Sr.-Hope HS/Providence, RI), Ryan Hamblett (Sr.-Spellman HS).

In the first quarter, Metro Boston fell behind by 14 points. The team couldn't buy a basket, let alone put it in the ocean. By halftime Metro Boston was down 12 points. In the second half, Metro Boston rallied to tie the game in the early stages of the third quarter. The rally was lead by Anthony Drayton, Willie Phillips, Matt Cahill, Dwight Brewington and Rahsheem Benson. With a little over two minutes to go in the game, the NY Ravens converted on two uncontested layups and began to pull away by making their free throws.

According to Coach Mo, "We had no legs that last game. The kids don't understand the importance of resting and taking care of their bodies. We knew coming down we would be underhanded in regards to players, so the kids that came should've known to handle themselves like professionals.

The kids played hard and never quit. That is what I'm proud of. Despite being underhanded (unable to attend were Dorien Brown, George Wright, Julius Byrd and Corey Cofield), we did real well and could've won that last game if we handled ourselves better. We didn't play defense. That was the difference of the game. Without any legs, how can you get back and play defense. Defense wins ball games."

In pool play, Metro Boston finished 3-0 by beating the GC Ballers (Buffalo, NY), NJ Wildcats, and Raleigh's Finest.
