Paveco Storm get first break, spot in title game
By Chris LynnFor The News Examiner
WHITE HOUSE – When the Baltimore (Md.) Stars and the Paveco (N.Y.) Storm squared off in Tuesday’s 15-under National Amateur Baseball Federation National Classic semifinal, they knew they belonged.
However, after four scoreless innings by both teams, thanks to good pitching and great defense, they showed all in attendance they were right.
It was evident that the first team to make a mistake, or even blink, would probably come out on the short end of the stick.
That’s what happened in the top of the fifth when Chris Longo from the Storm worked Matt Bauer, fouling off pitches until he got the one he wanted and drove it to right-center field for a leadoff triple.
Longo eventually scored the first of four Paveco runs, and the Storm held on for a 4-2 win.
After two walks with two outs in the fifth, it looked as if Paveco might come up empty again, but Gianni Masci’s chopper up the middle caused a collision at first base, leaving Masci safe and allowing the first run to cross the plate.
Paveco carried that momentum to the top of the sixth, where they put three more runs on the board.
Mike Rooney led off the inning with a bomb over the center-field fence, but the Storm wasn’t done there.
With two runners on, Max Greenough sacrificed a run home.
Then, Chris Mendoza tried the squeeze to get another home but ended up bunting over the pitcher. That left the only play to throw to first base for the out, making it 4-0.
Baltimore tried to rally late, scoring one in the bottom of the sixth as Bo Loar led off with a double to the left field fence and later scored on Matt Wilson’s single.
Then, in the bottom of the seventh with two on, Kevin Smetona hit one over the center fielder’s head for a long single that scored another run.
After a fielder’s choice, Bo Loar reached on an infield single to load the bases with one out, but Marcus Stroman struck out the final two batters to give the Storm the win and a berth into the finals against Team Arkansas.
“This was a good win for us,” said Paveco coach Roger Delgado. “They made a good run at us in the final two innings, but Marcus came through for us like he’s done all year. “It was a big win.”
