2009 Offseason Wrestling
The 2009 offseason saw a lot of growth and potential for the future. We had 15-20 wrestlers that put some time in this year and will look to make an impact on a much younger team than we had last season. Joseph DeLeon has put in a ton of work and looks to take it to the next level after a successful sophmore campaign. He took second in freestyle and 1st in folkstyle at the club state. He wrestled at the WOW and then really worked hard when summer came, wrestling in two Dual tournaments and getting in about 25 matches. He then went to 2 sessions of the Azevedo camp at Squaw Valley with his brother James. James is an incoming freshman that will work right in to the lineup. he took 1st in Greco, 5th in frestyle and 4th in folkstyle at club state and wrestled all the same stuf this summer with is brother. The DeLeons put in a ton of time 3-5 days a week and we look for big things from them this year. Joey Sorgani spent most of the offseason preparing for a big football season, but was able to get some good technique at the Azevedo camp and he will be a true leader in the coming year. He looks to make some noise after just missing the State tournament last year. Some sophmores looking to impact the team that got some wrestling in this offseason are Eric Martinez who just missed placing at the WOW yet is still very raw. Andrew Sullivan wrestled at on of the dual camps we went to and showed a ton of improvement, Sebastian Fejer and Domonic Jones got their feet wet at the WOW. They had never wrestled before and were still competitive with Sebastian getting a win in his first ever match. Domonic also wrestled at theone of the Duals with two freshman that showed a lot of toughness Brian Chavez and Aaron Borunda. Tyson Otuafi will look to make an impact in the upper weights putting in a good amount of time in the first part of the summer, and Bob Wood wrestled quite a bit during club season and has improved a lot wrestling all the way to the WOW and going to a camp in August. There were 2 other freshman thatput in a ton of work this offseason and made huge improvements. Joseph Pershall who won 2 matches at the WOW and didn't miss a summer workout till august when he had vacation time and Jarrett Silva who wnt to camp and went to most of the summer workouts. We have a new comer that may be exciting this year, Jeff Lobos worked hard all summer and showed a ton of growth in the 2 dual camps competing with some of the best from California in the 2 weeks. He also made it to most practices and has been fun to watch. Others that put some time in are Scott Downie who we hope can be one of the senior leaders, Christian Garcia, Zach Gruli, Alex Davis, Denise Julian, and Adel Ahmad. Good job you guys and we look forward to having a competitve team this year.

2009 State Tournament
It's a little late getting this up, but now is as good a time as any. We took 6 kids to State: Joseph DeLeon at 103, Jordan Lee at 135, Ed Sullivan at 152, Chris "Peanut" Gottlich at 160, Darin Gooch at 215, and Karrington Armstrong at 285. They all went and wrestled with a ton of heart. We didn't reach our ultimate goal, but I was proud of all of them. Joseph had his first experience at state and now knows what to expect next time. Peanut wrestled hard, but dislocated his elbow in his second match and was done. Gooch was 14-1 with 14 pins going into state, but couldn't get past an injury he sufferd in our first practice before state. Ed Sullivan wrestled his best tournaments of the year at the end. He backed a second place at regionals with a 4th at state and just missed the finals with a 3-2 loss in th semi's. Jordan Lee capped off a great senior year as a man on a mission. He had a tough call he had to come back from in the first round when he was up 6-1 in the middle of the second period and took his kid down too hard. He was called for the slam and DQ'ed while the kid he wrestled left the tournament and gave two kids a free walk in the the medal rounds. Jordan composed himself well and wrestled like a champion coming all the way back to get 3rd. Karrington had a let down as well in the first round by losing to a kid that juast ran most of the match in the final second of the period by not quite securing a takedown. He then showed the true heart of a champion by coming back through to earn a 3rd place finish. This was a good start to a tradition that we hope to keep alive for many years to come.
