McLean MPS Power U13 Girls Travel Soccer: News!!!!
Tuesday, February 12Power Open 2008 at Fayetteville Friendlies
Great job Triangle Futbol Club in putting on the Fayetteville Friendlies this past weekend! The Power enjoyed some top-notch soccer at incredible facilities in fantastic weather. The Power opened the Friendlies against a very athletic OCSA Coastal Crew (NC) side, following a match between a strong TFC club and the Power's Super-Y partners, the Bethesda Freedom. The Coastal Crew played a good match. The Power next met the host club, TFC, in a well-played friendly to end the first day. Capping off the weekend, the Power had the opportunity to meet a very skilled, athletic and organized CASL team. By the time the dust had settled, the Power had tallied 9 goals in three matches against extremely able teams and every player had experimented in a new system of play. On the ride home, most of the Power hit Ralph's BBQ to cap off a really great weekend of soccer and team building. Thanks again TFC -- great job -- everything ran smoothly and the fields and competition were tops!

Power Take Bethesda Thanksgiving Tournament Championship!!!!
Great performance by the Power at the nationally-recognized Bethesda Thanksgiving Day Tournament! The Power won the Championship in a fantastic finale against an incredibly strong and determined Pearls Prowlers team from Pennsylvania. The Power last met the Prowlers in the Jefferson Cup and squeaked by into the finals on penalty kicks. In the final at Bethesda, the two teams again played an even match, through two overtimes. In the end, Bethesda's unique rule of counting corner kicks put the championship in the Power's hands (the Power earned 9 corners to the Prowlers' 4 over the match). What a great match and what a great tournament!
En route to the championship, the Power had to get by some very strong teams -- Bethesda Storm and Spirit United Frenzy (Pennsylvania) in group play, and FC Delco Fusion (Pennsylvania) in the semi-finals. Many thanks to the Bethesda club for running such a fantastic tournament and to all the teams, every one of which is a great soccer side. Last but not least, the Power is tremendously thankful to its two guest players (Taylor and Darbie) from the Herndon Elite for helping out the Power.

Power Complete a Gutsy League Performance

Power End Wonderful Season at State Cup Final Four!
Wonderful job to end the season, McLean MPS Power! The Power conceded a tightly-contested 1-0 match to the VSA Heat in the semi-finals of the State Cup today. After allowing the Heat to go up one-nil in the first half, it was still either team's match to win. The Power controlled a lot of the play through the second half, but were unable to slip into score against the stingy Heat defense. The outcome of the match was in question until the final whistle, as the Power kept playing possession soccer and were dangerous to the end. The Power should be very proud of everything they accomplished in the Spring 2007 season (Jefferson Cup finalists, undefeated in WAGS league play, WAGS division Champions, Arlington turf tournament semi-finalists, Virginia State Cup semi-finalists, and the list goes on!) Congratulations, VSA Heat! – you are one heck of a team. Good luck in the finals!

WAGS Champions!
Congratulations to the Power! for cinching up the 2007 WAGS Division 2 Champion spot, after an undefeated season! The Power played some awsome teams on its way to a magical, undefeated season, assuring itself of promotion to WAGS Division 1 for the Fall of 2007. After a disappointment this past Winter when the Power were surprisingly left out of Division 1, the girls never wavered and dedicated themselves to hard work. It paid off with some beautiful soccer and some fantastic results. All of the teams that the Power met were wonderful soccer teams and great sports. Thanks Junior Majestics, MATT Matrix, LMVSA Patriots, Stafford Freedom, Ashburn Xtreme, Braddock Road Eclipse, ASA Blue Devils, Potomac Thunder, and Freedom Fighters!!!! -- you are all fantastic sides and the Power look forward to meeting up with each of you again!

Power Reach the Finals in Prestigious Jefferson Cup!

| Power Prevails in PK Shootout |
Well done at Jefferson Cup, MPS Power! The Power went undefeated in group play, advancing to the finals in the Cup's Premier Division. In doing so, the Power had to go through two very aggressive and physical sides, the Albertson Fury from New York and the Spirit United Frenzy from Pennsylvania. The Power started off at 8:00 am with the match against Albertson, and was able to score 3 goals to secure the match. Just an hour and a half after the conclusion of the Albertson match, the Power met a fresh Spirit United team, and despite some very aggressive, determined play by the Frenzy, the Power were able to hold their opponent scoreless. Then came the semi-finals, where the Power girls met the highly-competitive Pearls Prowlers of Pennsylvania and found a way to advance, albeit at the cost of increasing the stress level among the Power faithful. Late in a very well-played match, the Power girls conceded the equalizer to the strong Pearls crew, and the match went to overtime. After two scoreless overtime periods, the determination of who would advance went to PKs. The Power shooters were on their mark and the Power keeper was on her game (allowing only 1 PK goal), sending the girls on to the finals. In the finals the Power met the Holmdel (NJ) Hornets, but luck ran out for the Power. Despite several good chances, the Power could not convert and Holmdel played a great match to take the Cup home to New Jersey. Congratulations, Holmdel -- you played great. Fantastic job, Power!!!! Thanks for all the top-level soccer over the weekend Albertson, Spirit, Pearls and Holmdel! Thanks Richmond Strikers for putting on another fantastic Jefferson Cup!

Power Semi-Finalists at Arlington Spring Invitational
Great job by the MPS Power at the Arlington Spring Invitational! The Power went undefeated the first day of play with matches against two top-20 nationally-ranked teams, the Herndon (formerly Loudoun) Elite and the Chantilly Hotspur. The Power started the tournament against the Herndon Elite, taking it to the Elite early and going up 1-0 by the half. While the Power outplayed and outshot the Elite in the second half, it was the Elite that put a nice goal in the net to earn the equalizer. The Power then had to face Chantilly Hotspur, a team with very dangerous players. The Power had its chances, but it could not put one in and had to settle for a nil-nil tie. Through to the semi-finals, the Power earned a meeting with the VSA Heat. The Heat can put goals in the net quickly and they did so during one spurt in the first half, putting the Power in a 3-nil hole. Yet, the Power showed great resilience, controlling much of the play in the second half and ending the match at a two goal differential, 3-1, to the ultimate tournament champions (congrats, Heat!). Arlington did a wonderful job with the tournament, keeping it moving despite some tough weather conditions. Thanks Arlington, and thanks Elite, Hotspur and Heat for some great soccer!

Power Win U13 Indoor Division at Fairfax SportsPlex
Congratulations! to the MPS Power for winning the Championship of the U13 girls division at Fairfax SportsPlex today. Playing up against much bigger and more physical teams, the Power amassed 92 goals in eight matches and earned a goal differential of +55. In the Championship match, the U12 Power held possession of the ball overwhelming and outshot their U13 opponent from the Burke Athletic Club by a significant margin. The Power had to make up a two-goal deficit late in the match and save a PK. As the match wound towards full time, despite having the ball and threatening Burke’s goal repeatedly, the Power came up unlucky repeatedly in attempts to finish their many chances. The match then went into a sudden death. There, the Power left little to chance. Their skill and speed took over and Power the girls earned the Golden Goal within 2 minutes' time. The girls had a great winter of training and playing at SportsPlex and are looking forward to the warming temperatures and outdoor play that Spring has to offer. Great job, Power!

Power End Up Undefeated and Unscored On at Fayetteville Friendlies
Fantastic job! Congratulations to the MPS Power for going undefeated and unscored against at the prestigious Fayetteville Friendlies. In their first two matches, the Power met up with two very talented CAPITAL AREA SOCCER ("CASL") squads, and then, capped off the Friendlies with a second-day, 3-nil win over the host club's top U12 team, TFC Navy. Over the weekend, the Power scored 5 goals, and held their opponents to none. Each Power girl played multiple positions and gained some great experience, all the while allowing the coaches to get some looks at the squad in a highly-competitive setting. The tournament ran like clockwork and the fields were in great shape. Fantastic job TFC! The Power looks forward to returning next Winter!

Power Accepted to the Prestigious 27th Annual Jefferson Cup!
Congratulations! to the MPS Power for being accepted to the prestigious 27th annual Jefferson Cup (for the 2007 Spring season). The Jefferson Cup is currently ranked as the number 4 soccer tournament for girls in the nation. Highly competitive, Jeff Cup turns down on average 500 applicant teams a year. For this Spring, the Jefferson Cup selection committee has assembled one heck of a field, with teams from some of the very best clubs in the nation. As a club, McLean/MPS put 8 girls teams into the Cup this Spring! In the U12 group, the Power has the opportunity to meet up with teams from Albertson Soccer Club in New York, Colorado Rush Nike, Smithfield Lady Strikers of Rhode Island, Rochester Jr. Rhinos of New York, CASL in North Carolina, Michigan Wolves Hawks and many more. Its bound to be a great tournament, with great soccer! The Power are looking forward to a great set of matches!

Power Accepted to Top Bracket for 2007 Arlington Spring Invitational
The Power has been accepted to play in the 2007 Arlington Spring Invitational, which will be played all on turf fields the weekend of March 16-18, 2007. The Tournament Director assembled an exceptionally strong U12 Premier bracket, including several of the very top teams in the State and a strong WCUSC '94 Predators squad from Pennsylvania. The Arlington turf tournament will provide a fantastic opportunity for the Power and all these strong teams to kick off the 2007 Spring season. Good luck to all the teams!

Power Completes First Winter Indoor Session With Many Successes
The Power concluded a very successful first session of indoor leagues play at the Fairfax SportsPlex. The girls competed in both the U12 boys league and the U13 girls league (playing up). In the girls competition, the Power ended 2 goals shy of scoring 100 goals in league play – the MOST of any girls team competing in the Fairfax SportsPlex (out of 32 teams). In the boys competition, the Power improved their team speed of play and individual quickness. Over the course of their matches, every girl made improvement in quickness, ball skill and tactical awareness. The girls will now play a second set of leagues for the final winter session at Fairfax, before moving back outdoors on the big field for 11 v 11 soccer in the spring. Well done, Power!
Sunday, December 31
Another Great Job, Breakers!
Congratulations to the MPS Breakers – the Power’s sister team – for going undefeated in 8 matches and winning the first session of the Fairfax SportsPlex U12 girls indoor league this winter. The Breakers scored 85 goals and allowed 30 en route to a perfect season. The girls’ positive 55 goal differential meant that, on average, the Breakers outscored their opponent by almost 8 goals per match. Well done, Breakers!

Great Job MPS Breakers!
|
Congratulations to the MPS Breakers for their tremendous performance at the Hunt Country Classic over the weekend of November 18-19, 2006. The Breakers, the Power's sister team and training partners, are shown here enjoying their hardware with Coach Marvin Cabezas, after taking the Hunt Country Classic's top U12 girls division by storm. En route to the finals against the GFA Earthquakes, the Breakers defeated Annandale's X-treme (2-1), the Braddock Road Youth Club Eclipse (3-1) and played a close match with the MSC Strikers. Notwithstanding the icy weather, these girls were all smiles. Nice job girls!

Power Conclude Strong Showing at CASL Shootout in Raleigh, NC
Win Loss Tie Points Severna Park Elite, MD 2 0 1 7 MPS Power 1 1 1 4 Impact USA Nike, TN 0 1 2 2 SYA Power, VA 0 1 2 2
Nice job by the MPS Power at the CASL Shootout! The Power placed as runner-up in their group (and to the eventual tournament Champion), failing to advance by one goal and leaving the girls with a challenge to meet over the next year.
For its first match, the Power drew an 8 am start against the Severna Park Elite. Earlier in the season at the Capital Cup, the Power had defeated the Elite 2-1. This time, the teams played a very close match again, and the Power -- despite having chances to get the equalizer late in the match -- came up on the short end of a 1-0 scoreline. [Severna Park went on to win the tournament, 2-nil, in the final]. Next, the Power played the Number 3 team in the State of Tennesee (according to GotSoccer), Nike Impact USA, and controlled the match for a 1-0 win. That left the Power with a 7:50 am start against the SYA Power from Centerville, Virginia. Receiving an ugly wake-up call, the Power conceded a goal at the very start of the match. Yet, showing the mark of a strong team, the girls got organized, earned the equalizer (watch it here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kTkGbXFZnU0) and turned the momentum their way, only to run out of time in a shortened match. The final standings for the CASL U12 Girls Elite - Group A ended as follows:
Now, its back to training over the Winter, to build on the successes of the Fall and get prepared for the Spring campaign – WAGS, several elite tournaments and State Cup. Go Power!

Power Complete WAGS Fall 2006 Season in Fine Form
Great Job!, MPS Power, in completing the Fall 2006 WAGS league season. The Power ended WAGS league play this Fall with a nicely-played victory against next-door-neighbor, Vienna Phoenix United. In three seasons in WAGS, the Power has achieved a 22-4-1 record. Its now off to the CASL Shootout in Raleigh, North Carolina to play some great soccer and see the ACC Women’s Tournament.

Power Earn A Spot in the Semi-Finals at the 2006 WAGS Tournament
The Power ended their run at the prestigious WAGS Tournament as a semi-finalist, dropping to the Michigan Gators 95 Orange (ranked #2 in Michigan by the National Soccer Rankings), the second-most prolific team in group play out of the 48-team U12 field and the ultimate tournament Champion. The Power started off with a 1-1 draw against a solid Voorhees Avengers team (ranked #4 in New Jersey by Gotsoccer). Voorhees got the equalizer late on a direct kick. Later that first day, the Power defeated the Tri-Borough Blue Lightening (ranked #8 in Pennsylvania by Soccer in College), 1-0. That victory set up the Power in a match with the HBC Earthquakes (#3 in New York, according to Soccer in College) to determine which team from the Power’s bracket would advance to the semi-finals. HBC, to that point, was undefeated in group play. HBC and the Power had met previously, the past Memorial Day weekend at the FC Delco Player’s Cup tournament. At Delco, the Power had defeated HBC, but HBC had won the tournament. At WAGS, the teams were again very evenly matched. They played a very fast, skilled match, which was scoreless at half. Ultimately, however, the Power prevailed 3-0 to advance to the semi-finals.

The Power did a tremendous job against some top-level competition. The Power thanks the WAGS Tournament Committee for its ability to pull off a great tournament, despite the difficult weather that immediately preceded play. And, the Power thanks its guest players who pitched in to help out the Power and have some fun at WAGS. Nice job Power, and nice job Voorhees, Tri-Borough, HBC and WAGS Tournament Champion Michigan Gators! The Power hopes to meet up on the pitch with each of you again real soon.

Power Make Fine Showing at Rain-Delayed Capital Cup
The Power had a great showing at the Capital Cup. The Power played in the toughest bracket of the tournament’s top division at U12. In their first match, the Green Girls defeated a very strong Severna Park Elite team, 2-1. Next, in an evening match, the Power met up with a great side from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, the Century United club (a club which has won Regional titles, numerous Pennsylvania State Cup titles and league titles). The Power came back from a one goal deficit to win 2-1 in a match that was fiercely contested. That set up a match with the also-undefeated Soccer Association of Columbia (SAC) United Premier team, which soccerincollege.com had ranked at #3 in the nation. A lot was at stake: Due to the fact that two teams in one of the other two brackets had tied each other, the winner of the Power-SAC match would advance and neither team would be able to earn a wild card out of the Power’s bracket. The Power displayed some nice teamwork and intensity, controlling much of the match, but they briefly left SAC’s quick wing unmarked and she got off an amazing shot from the corner that went into the net to put SAC ahead. From there, the Power put a lot of pressure on SAC but could not get the ball into the goal. SAC – the tournament favorite going in – advanced through its semi-final and onto the final. The Power played well, and has the utmost respect for the strong teams that they met at the Capital Cup – when the Power meet them again, they look forward to some more great soccer!

Power Seeded in Toughest Bracket of Washington Cup's Top Division
In anticipation of some great Labor day weekend soccer, the Capital Cup modified the brackets for its top division (the Championship Division), and the Power finds itself in what may be the strongest of the three brackets in the Championship Division. The Power will play the following very strong sides: Century United of Western Pennsylvania; SAC United Premier of Columbia, Maryland; and Severna Park Elite of Maryland. Hopefully, tropical storm Ernesto bypasses the Cup, and the tournament gets played. Good luck to all the fine teams in the Capital Cup, and good luck Power!

Power End Dulles National As Premier Division Runner-Up
Congratulations to the Power for earning runner-up honors at the top division of the Dulles National Tournament. The Power opened the season in its first 11 v 11 match with a 7:30 am Saturday start against the Herndon (formerly, Loudoun) Elite. The girls started very slowly and gave up some goals in the first half to put themselves in a hole. Later in the opening day, the Power played the Ashburn Xtreme (formerly, the Loudoun Wave) to a 1-1 draw. The Power had plenty of opportunities, but hats off to the Xtreme and its guest keeper who was phenomenal in keeping the Power to one goal. The second morning, the Power met the Alexandria Titans, and while the Titans showed some very good skill and excellent hustle, the Power played well enough (5-0) to put themselves through into the Championship match with the Herndon Elite. The Elite again came out strong and put some very nice shots into the net in the first half. The Power, however, collected itself nicely, taking control of much of the play and putting multiple shots on the Elite's goal, particularly in the second half. However, the shots did not go in for the Power and the Elite's ability to score those first half goals was the difference, leaving the Power to settle for runner-up status. Nonetheless, not a bad start to the 2006 Fall season for the Power. Next up, the Capital Cup (formerly, the Washington Fall Classic), where the Power will face a juggernaut of a schedule -- the Herndon Elite (third time in one week), SAC Premier and the Severna Park Elite.

Power Play Well at FC Delco Over Memorial Day Weekend
The Power had some good moments at FC Delco. In their opening match, the Power defeated the HBC Earthquakes from Long Island, New York: 4-1. The Earthquakes would go on to claim the U11 girls Premier Division FC Delco Championship. Unfortunately for the Power, they played less than their best match against the LANCO United (Pennsylvania), and while they played very stong against the Livingston Lynx (New Jersey) and had the majority of chances, it was Livingston that tallied the only goal of the match. As a result, the Power were left out of the semi-final matches. Very nice job by HBC, bouncing back from its initial loss to the Power to run the table against some very stiff competition.

The Power is looking forward to meeting each of these squads on the pitch in Pennsylvania. Good luck everyone, and play hard!

Power Fare Well at 2006 Jefferson Cup
The Power came up unlucky at the 2006 Jefferson Cup. After leading 1-0, the girls dropped their first match to a strong Loudoun Wave team. The Power then defeated the West Virginia State Champion Rowdies, 1-0. For their third match, the Power defeated the Richmond Strikers Wambach, 4-0. After the win over the Wambach, the Power was still alive but had to wait to see the outcome of the Wave-Rowdies match, as a Rowdies victory would put the Power into the Championship. Yet, the Power did not get the help they needed, as the Wave and Rowdies played to a 0-0 result. Nonetheless, the Power, which scored the most goals in the tournament’s Premier Flight and played some fantastic soccer, made a great showing. Congratulations Loudoun Wave and all the fine Jefferson Cup U11 girls teams!

Power Claim 2006 Loudoun Icebreaker Championship
Congratulations to the MPS Power for claiming the 2006 Loudoun Icebreaker Tournament Championship this afternoon at the Northern Virginia CC fields in Sterling, Virginia. The Power defeated the Loudoun Wave, 6-2, in a well-played championship match. Earlier in the tournament, the Power defeated the Arlington Explosion Blue, 5-0, and its sister team, the McLean Breakers. The Power look forward to seeing the talented Loudoun Wave again, next week at the Jefferson Cup. Nice job Power and all the U11 girls teams, and thanks Loudoun Soccer Club for putting on a very nice tournament to start the Spring 2006 outdoor season!

Power Complete Indoor Session In Championship Match
The Power completed their second indoor session at Fairfax SportsPlex, playing up in the U12 Championship match today. Starting out a little slower than usual, the green girls narrowly dropped the Championship match to an Annandale U12 team that they had split matches with in league play. Yet, the season was a fantastic success, as the Power's game improved, their speed of play quickened and the girls scored the most goals in the U12 division. The Power now look forward to transtioning to the outdoor season, with a scrimmage against the Loudoun Elite, tournament play in the Loudoun Icebreaker and then, Jefferson Cup play all before the WAGS regular Spring season starts on April 1st.
Sunday, February 12

Power Earn Invite to Indoor Nationals In Cleveland, Ohio
December 29, 2005. Congratulations to the MPS Power, which was notified today that it had qualified for the Indoor National tournament to be held in Cleveland, Ohio in February. The Power earned a coveted spot in the Indoor National bracket as a result of its finish in the Regional Tournament in Rockville, Maryland. The Indoor National will feature the best of the best from the United States, Canada and Mexico. This marks the second year straight that MPS has placed its U11 squad into the Nationals. Last year, the MPS Strikers, also coached by Jamil Faryadi, earned a spot in the Nationals. Well done, Power!
Saturday, December 17
Power Complete 1st Indoor Session Playing Up, Average 11+ Goals Per Match
The Power finishes 3rd in the U12 division of Fairfax SportsPlex indoor competition in the first session of Winter indoor soccer. The Power showed remarkable improvement over the course of the campaign against some great teams. Playing up in the U12 bracket, the Power started slowly, but once they acclimated to the faster, stronger players who play a year ahead of them in the regular seasons, the Power acheived success, particularly in the latter part of the session. The green girls came within one game of playing for the U12 championship, scored 67 goals (second most scored by any girls travel squad from U9 to U15 at the Fairfax SportsPlex!), yielded the second fewest number of goals, and completed the session with a +33 goals for/goals against ratio. Great job Power! Great job all U12 teams -- the Power is looking forward to the second session.
Sunday, December 11
Power End Up 1 Goal Away From Regional Championship
The Power ended up one goal away from playing for the Mid-Atlantic Indoor National Regional Championship at the U11/U12 level, with a draw against a fine Next Level Academy (NLA) team from North Carolina.
Drawing the toughest schedule of any team in the U11/U12 competition, the Power started its Indoor National quest by coming out a little flat against one of the two NLA teams in the competition (teams comprised of the best players throughout the Carolina Area Soccer League (CASL)), and dropping the opening match. Later on the first day of tournament play, the Power regrouped and beat the Bethesda Thunder, 4-2 in a match that both teams played well.
With the win over the Bethesda Thunder, the Power put themselves in a position to earn a spot in the Championship match as long as they could defeat NLA's other entry. The two teams met up on Sunday morning, and the Power went out to a 3-nil lead, but NLA -- having travelled from North Carolina to Maryland to play, and spurred on by several of their club's screaming fans -- came roaring back and found themselves up 4-3 with 7 minutes left. Then, it was all Power to the end. The Power tied the match with 5 minutes left and took shot after shot towards the end of the match, trying to keep their dream alive. Unfortunately for the Power, the match ended too early and at 4-4, meaning that the NLA squad advanced to the finals, having not dropped a match. Tough break for the Power, but you have to hand it to NLA -- they have some great squads who earned the right to play in the Championship and to head to Cleveland for the National Indoor title. Good luck, NLA -- the Power will be rooting for you!

Power Personnel on the Mend
The first weekend of WAGS matches took its toll on the Power, which lost one of its stalwarts, Ali Queen, for at least a month. Ali fractured her right foot in the 5th minute of the second half of the Power's Loudoun Elite match. The mishap occurred whilst Queen was battling for a 50/50 ball with a tenacious Loudoun striker. The steadfast Queen played another 20 minutes, without a single complaint. After the match, however, she recognized that the pain was unusual and was taken to the hospital where she received the bad news of the break. The Power thank the Elite for being the class act that they are by wishing Ali a speedy recovery, which we know she'll make.
In separate news, Maddie Ball broke an arm in a nasty spill in the Breakers opening WAGS match. No stranger to difficulty, Ball got right back into training at the next Power/Breakers training session without missing a beat.
Get well soon, girls. And, keep playing your hardest!

PCA Publishes Help for Parents -- Is This You????
From the Positive Coaching Alliance Connector, Issue #17, May 2005:
| 4) Sports Parent Tool Kit: "Let the Lightness Seep In" |
Dan Saferstein has written a handy little booklet full of great advice for sports parents called Win or Lose: A Guide to Sports Parenting. Here is an excerpt: "Your child will last longer as a competitive athlete, and you will last longer as a sports parent, if you learn to maintain your sense of humor under fire. The sports families that seem to have the hardest times are the ones who head off to competitions as if they were heading into a war zone. The father sits at the steering wheel of his SUV like a tank commander; the mother sits like an army medic awaiting casualties; and junior sits in the back seat as if his life were on the line. It reminds me of a quote from the golfer, Chi Chi Rodriguez. When asked if he felt under a lot of pressure to make a final putt to win a championship, he replied, 'Pressure isn't about making putts to win golf tournaments. Pressure is about picking enough cotton to feed your family at the end of the day.' "Fortunately, most of us aren't relying on our children's athletic performances to put food on the table. The desperation is only in our minds, which invariably then seeps into the minds of our children. The good news is that our lightness can also seep into the minds of our children. They can learn from us to smile in the face of misfortune and look ahead to the next game. In youth sports, there is always another game, and the most successful athletes learn to let go of their disappointment and start preparing for it. They learn to laugh with their teammates, laugh with their families, laugh at the crazy and magical world of sports that can leave us feeling like we're on top of the clouds one minute and neck-deep in quicksand the next." Contact Dan Saferstein for copies of Win or Lose: A Guide to Sports Parenting at dansaferstein@earthlink.net, 734-663-7470 or 122 South Main Street, Suite 300, Ann Arbor, MI 48104. The booklet is $5 and volume discounts are available. |

Fond Farewell to Maggie
The Power wishes a fond farewell -- for the moment -- to Power stalwart, Maggie. Maggie's family is moving out of the country, as her dad has been called upon by his law firm to head abroad. Maggie has kitted up for the Power for two solid years (including the 2003-2004 seasons when the Power was one of two McLean "balanced" teams, as well as the Fall of 2004 after the Power squad was re-constituted as the premier U10 girls team in the McLean system). She has been a key part of the Power defense that held multiple ODSL teams scoreless over the 2003 and 2004 seasons. Her game is solid in all aspects. She has given the Power and its fans thrills time and time again, and made her teammates better players. Without a doubt, there is a youth soccer team somewhere in Hong Kong that is going to benefit tremendously from the Power's loss. Maggie will be missed by all in the Power family. We wish you the best of luck Maggie! You are a fantastic player and a great friend. Come back home to McLean real soon!

PCA Weighs in to Help Define a "Competitor"
Many thanks to Jim Thompson for his recent article in the Autumn publication of Momentum, the Positive Coaching Alliance’s Newsletter, where Jim provides these words on the definition of a competitor:
Defined in terms of three crucial relationships, a competitor is someone who makes things better!
The Competitor’s Relationship…with Self: A competitor works to be the best athlete and person she can be. She understands this is a lifetime pursuit and recognizes that competitive sports provides a powerful platform for preparing oneself for this lifelong goal. She does not rely on the scoreboard alone to evaluate her performance, recognizing that one can look good against inferior competition and less stellar against top-flight competition. A competitor focuses on the ELM Tree of Mastery, where the focus is on Effort, Learning, and bouncing back from Mistakes.
…with Teammates: A competitor makes her teammates better. She focuses on playing her role on the team well, but also looks for opportunities to encourage and support teammates. She understands the principle of filling “Emotional Tanks,” and helps fill the E-tanks of her team members and coaches.
…with the Game: A competitor makes the game itself better! She wants to win and competes fiercely to do so, but always within an ethical context. She understands and embodies Honoring the Game, showing respect for the Rules, Opponents, Officials, Teammates, and Self (ROOTS).
A competitor is intent on becoming someone of whom her team, school, family, and she herself can be proud. One who learns to Honor the Game in the competitive crucible of sports will be more likely to live an honorable life.

Positive Coaching Alliance Responds to NBA Brawl
The following is an excerpt from the Positive Coaching Alliance's Connector e-newsletter issued November 2004, encouraging parents to speak with their child-athletes about the recent poor example set by NBA players brawling with each other and fans. The Power and their families strive to follow the PCA's principles, for the good of the athlete and the game. Here, in part, is what the PCA has to say to parents about this tragic circumstance:
. . . beyond showing your disapproval, you also have the opportunity to reinforce specific positive values and character traits. Here are some ideas to talk with youth athletes about the brawl.
- The Definition of a Competitor: Many people think it is an excess of competitiveness that causes fights to break out in sporting events. The truth is the opposite. Stanford Women's Volleyball Coach John Dunning said, "So many kids think they're great competitors because they growl the loudest or cuss the loudest (editor's note: or are ready to fight the quickest). I define a competitor as the person who is most often ready to play and win the next play." Given that Dunning's Stanford University team won an NCAA title in 2002, perhaps he knows something about this! By this definition, Ron Artest is the most un-competitive player in the NBA: He just put himself in the position of not being able to win the next play for an entire season!
- Responsibility to One's Teammates: PCA promotes Honoring the Game as getting to the ROOTS of Positive Play, where ROOTS stands for respect for the Rules, Opponents, Officials, Teammates and Self. If a player values and respects his or her teammates, he or she would never do something to take them out of a game or championship quest. Great teams bond together around a shared commitment to give their best to each other and the team so they can see how good they can be. An athlete's behavior both on and off the playing field can bring honor as well as dishonor to his or her team.
- Respect for One's Self: An overriding goal of participating in sports is to build strong individuals with courage and integrity who will not violate their own standards simply to gain an edge in a sporting contest. It's great that athletes Honor the Game because they know their coach or parents want them to. It's a higher level of moral development when athletes Honor the Game because they want to live up to their own highest picture of themselves.
