Wednesday, July 8
Monday July 6

Tonight’s four games were played at the Deborah Sampson Playground in Sharon. 

 Holbrook/Avon   12                Norwell        1     

Holbrook/Avon (2-1) scored 12 runs in the bottom of the first in this one that was called after four innings due to the ten run rule.  Joe Smith had two 3-run homeruns in the inning and Kevin Curley added a solo shot.  Andy Reilly tossed all four innings, allowed three hits, one run and struck out four.  For Norwell Brian Kulka had two hits and a run scored while Tom Larason had an rbi-single. 

Sharon    5Hanson   1     

Nathan Wright (4 1/3 innings, 85 pitches) and Alec Shostek (1 2/3 innings, 17 pitches) kept Sharon (1-1) alive.  Sharon got 4 runs in the bottom of the first on an rbi-single by Neil Chandra and a 3-run home run by Brian Mukasa.  Chandra added another rbi-single in the second inning.  Nick Villanueva had two hits for Hanson and Drew Alexopolous earned the lone rbi with a bases loaded walk in the fourth for Hanson (1-2). 

 Canton 7       Hingham American  5     

Phil Pennacchio blasted a 2-run homerun in the top of the sixth to carry Canton (1-1) to victory and break a 5-5 tie.  Griffin Jerrier blasted a 3-run home run earlier for Canton.  Jack Santilli, Brett Tivnan, and Jack Mannion all contributed to the offense for Hingham American (1-2).  Reese Linton tossed a complete game in the loss.  

Milton National     14    Weymouth American   0     

 Carter Lee (3 hits, 2 runs scored), Brad Russian (2 hits, 3 rbi), and Jonathan Carrera (2 hits, rbi, rs) were the main offensive forces for Milton American (2-1) in this one.  Terry Cullen tossed the first three innings in the game that was called after four for the 10-run rule.  Matt Walsh pitched the fourth for a save.  Weymouth National (0-2) was eliminated with the loss.

Day One District 8 Williamsport Tournament

All of these games were played at the Deborah Sampson Playground in Sharon.

Hanson 3

Rockland  0     

Jame Lemanski tossed the first five innings, had eight strikeouts, and added an rbi-single to lead Hanson to victory.  Colin Josselyn added three hits and two rbi’s and Alex Burbank had two runs scored.  Nick Villanueva tossed the sixth inning to earn a save.  Joe Reardon had a long double for Rockland. 

Abington 4

Norwell    2  

Jake Quinlan tossed a complete game with eleven strikeouts and helped himself with a 2-run homerun.  P.J. MacDonald played solid at second base for Abington.  Tom Larason had a 2-run homerun for Norwell’s offense. 

Braintree National   4

Holbrook/Avon        1  

Sean Casey tossed a three-hitter and struck out seven in his complete game victory.  Kyle Leslie had two hits and rbi for Braintree while Pat Ronca added a double.  The combination of Ryan McMahon (single), Kevin Curley (double), and Trevor O’Brien (rbi-single) produced the only run for Avon/Holbrook. 

Cohasset    9

Sharon       5   (7 innings)  

Cohasset scored a run in the top of the sixth to stave off the loss and then scored four on the top of the seventh to earn the victory.  Brett Dooley’s rbi-double put Cohasset ahead to stay and later in the inning Charlie Blackenton added a 2-run double.  Pat Federle had a 3-run double in the first to start Cohasset’s offense while Pat Holway added a solo homerun in the third.  Tommy O’Brien tossed the final four innings to capture the win, he struckout ten.

Scituate           12

Weymouth National    0  

Three pitchers combined to toss a no-hitter at Weymouth National.  Peter Belval tossed the first 3 1/3 with 8 strikeouts.  Joe Gaziano went the next 1 2/3 with 4 strike outs, followed by Chris Scibilio who struckout the side in the sixth.  Scituate's offense was provided by Danny Sullivan (3 hits), Scott Radding had two hits (including a 2-run homerun) and  Geoffrey Stillman with two.

 Milton American   6

Canton                0  

Matt Doherty tossed a complete game three hitter and struck out nine.  Ryan McDougal led the offense with a 2-run double and Charles Davis added a 2-run home run.  Kevin Murphy added two hits and a run scored.  Kevin Doody, Brian Brooks, and Paul Swart had the hits for Canton. 

Braintree American    10

Hingham American      0   

Tom Victor tossed a 2-hitter in a game called after four inning on the 10-run rule.  Victor struckout six.  Conor Columbus (solo), Robbie McKenney (solo), and Chris Reddington (3-run) each hit home runs for Braintree.  Ken Carr and Greg Williamson each had hits for Hingham.

Hingham National        6

Weymouth American   4

   Austin Irvin went the first 4 1/3 shutout innings before giving away to the bullpen as Hingham National held on.  David Hutchins had two home runs (2-run and 3-run) for the Hingham offense.  Jack Hern (two hits) drove in the other run.  Joe Roddy tossed the sixth inning to earn a save.  Gavin Ajoku and Mario Picariello each had two hits for Weymouth American.

The tournament continues tomorrow with four games at the Hollingsworth Playground in Braintree.

Tuesday, June 30
Day Two of District 8 Williamsport Tournament

Today’s four games were played at Hollingsworth Park in Braintree.  A HUGH THANK YOU to the Braintree American staff and the District 8 Umpires who worked to get the fields in top shape after a brief but hard rain storm prior to the start of play.

Hanover   11

Hanson    1    

Justin Paskell tossed all four innings in a game called due to the 10-run rule.  Brendan Cornell blasted a 3-run home run and Jack Judge added a 2-run single. 

Braintree American   11

Hull                           0  

Bobby McNiff tossed all four innings with seven strikeouts in a game called after four innings for the 10-run rule.  Connor Columbus and Cody Richardi hit back-to-back solo homeruns in the bottom of the first to start the offense.  After two outs Chris Reddington made it 3-0 with a solo shot of his own.  In the third inning, John Crowley had an rbi-groundout.  McNiff helped himself with an rbi-single in the bottom of the fourth before Gino Larossa ended it with a grand slam homerun.  Hull managed two singles in the game, one each by Mahoney and Ellison. 

Hingham National   5

Milton National       4     

Hingham National was paced by Liam McCarthy (2 hits), Steve Cochrane (2 hits), and Nick Barrett (2-run double) in their win.  Andrew Burke made the defensive play of the tournament when he reached over the fence in centerfield and took a home run away from Milton’s Mike Davis in the third inning.  Nick Windwer had a 3-run homerun in the top of the sixth to bring Milton close but Joe Roddy recorded the final outs for Hingham.

 Braintree National    7

Whitman                1     

Scott Strachan tossed a complete game with seven strikeouts.  The offense was paced by Sean Casey, Billy Keane (2 hits, rbi), Derek Grubis, Kyle Leslie, and Brett Ellsworth.

2009 Little League Baseball Tournament Opening Pairings

At the Massachusetts District Eight meeting held on June 11, 2009, the following pairings were drawn for the first round of the Massachusetts District 8 Little League Baseball Tournament.

All of the following games will be played at the Deborah Sampson Playground in Sharon. These games are scheduled for Sunday, June 28, 2009.

at 3:00pm--Game 1  Hingham National vs, Weymouth American

                  Game 2  Hingham American vs. Braintree American

                  Game 4  Braintree National vs. Holbrook/Avon

                  Game 8  Canton vs. Milton American

at 5:30pm--Game 3   Hanson vs. Rockland

                  Game 5   Scituate vs. Weymouth National

                  Game 6   Abington vs. Norwell

                  Game 7   Cohasset vs. Sharon

On Monday night at Hollingsworth Park in Braintree the following games will be played.

                  Game 9   Milton National vs. Game 1 winner.

                  Game 10  Hull vs. Game 2 winner.

                  Game 11   Hanover vs. Game 3 winner.

                  Game 12   Whitman vs. Game 4 winner.

Game times will be determined after the 3:00pm games on Sunday.  Three games will be played at 6:00pm and the fourth game will be played at 8:00pm.

The tournament will continue on Wednesday with four more games, stay here for all the news and information on this years tournament!  Twenty teams, one champion.



Thursday, June 25
2009 Massachusetts District 8 Junior League Baseball Tournament

The 2009 Massachusetts District 8 Meeting held on June 11, 2009; the Junior League pairing were selected for this years tournament.  Their will be seven teams participating, and they will be trying to duplicate the feats of the 2008 Canton Junior League team.  This special group won District, Section, State, Regional and advanced to the Junior League World Series in Taylor, Michigan.

Opening day is June 30, 2009 with three games.

Game 1   Quincy (new to LLB) vs. Hanson at Eastern Nazarene College at 5:30pm.

Game 2   Cohasset vs. Norwell at Rockland's Memorial Stadium at 5:30pm

Game 3   Scituate vs. Rockland at Rockland's Memorial Stadium at 8:00pm (approx.).

The tournament will continue on Thursday when Canton will play the winner of game 1 at Adams Field in Quincy at 5:30pm.

The tournament will continue for two weeks until a champion is crowned.  That team will then advance to Section play with the goal of reaching the state finals in Lowell.



Thursday, June 25
2009 Massachusetts District Eight Senior League Baseball Tournament

This year the Massachusetts District 8 Senior League Baseball Tournament has four teams.

The opening round games will be played at Scituate High School at 1:00pm on Sunday, July 5th.  Game 1 has Canton vs. Scituate and Game 2 will have Abington vs. Rockland.  This tournament will take approximately a week to conclude with the winner advancing to the Section Tournament with their first game on July 14, 2009.  Good luck to all!



Wednesday, July 1
Junior League Baseball Divison--Day 1

Day one saw three games played in weather suited more for London, England than baseball.

At times it was difficult to see through the mist and the fog but the teams played on to their credit.

Game 1:  Quincy  8 vs. Hanson 2

     Tom McDonald tossed a complete game 4-hitter with six strikeouts.  Rudy Tryon and Dan Cobban each had three hits for Quincy who was playing in their first ever Junior League Tournament game.  Special pinch runner Matt Davis had five stolen bases.

Game 2:  Scituate  3 vs. Rockland 1

     Connor Gibbons tossed six strong innings to lead Scituate to victory.  Dan Buckley had all three rbi's for Scituate while Mike Stewart blasted two doubles and scored two runs.

Game 3:  Cohasset  4 vs. Norwell 2

The schedule continues on Thursday with Game 4 (Quincy vs. Canton) at Adams Field in Quincy at 5:30pm.   THIS GAME HAS BEEN POSTPONED DUE TO WET CONDITIONS.   It has be rescheduled for Sunday, July 5 at 2:00pm at Gibson Field located behind Canton High School (Washington Street).

On Sunday, July 5th at 10:00am Game 5 and 6 will be played at Scituate High School.

Game 5 (Varsity Field) Scituate vs. Cohasset.

Game 6 (JV Field) Rockland vs. Norwell.

Stay here for more updates.  The tournament continues on Tuesday, July 7 with three games at three different sites (Canton, Hanson, and Quincy).

Junior League Division--Day 2

Day two of the Junior League Baseball Tournament took place on Sunday, July 5th.

Cohasset   11

Scituate    4

     Scituate scored four runs in the bottom of the first but Shane Haggerety righted the ship and tossed shutout baseball until the end.  Haggerty was also a force with the bat as he had three hits and two runs scored.  Cohasset took the wind out of Scituate's sails with a seven run third innning and three more in the fourth.  Mick Barry, Conor Dooley and Gideon Muprhy all had key hits in the third.  Bob Summers and Mike Hassett each had 2-run singles in the first for Scituate's offense.

Quincy       5

Canton         0

     Dan Cobban tossed a complete game allowing only four hits and striking out seven with no walks.  He also contributed offensively with two rbi's (a sacrafice fly and an rbi-single).  Patrcik Verhault (2 rbi) and Mike Gallotto each banged out two hits each.  Andrew Currie was a pest on the bases with four stolen bases and three runs scored.

Norwell   7

Rockland  3

    Pat Carroll and Bill Sewell combined pitching Norwell to victory.  Owen Wiggins and Jake Bennett each had rbi-hits for Norwell.

There were two games played on Sunday, July 5th.

Abington    5

     Rockland scored the games final three runs to earn the victory.

Canton       15

Scituate      1

     Matt Bernstein tossed the first six inning of shutout baseball.  Brian Gorham pitched the seventh to earn a save.  Mike Olhenbeg and Tom Jenkins led the offense for Canton.

 

Senior League will resume on Wednesday with two games at Rockland's Memorial Stadium.

at 5:30pm--Abington vs. Scituate

at 8:00pm--Rockland vs. Canton

On Thursday at Ruane Field in Canton at 5:30pm the Abington/Scituate winner will play the Rockland/Canton loser in this double-elimination tournament.



Thursday, July 9
Williamsport July 8 results

All of today’s games were played at Hollingsworth Park in Braintree.

Milton National   2  Braintree National 1     

Milton National (3-1) scored a walk-off win with a run in the bottom of the sixth.  Nick Windwer had an infield single and was replaced by pinch runner Matt Walsh.  Walsh scored the game winner on a single to centerfield by Terry Cullen that was misplayed and ran all the way to the fence.  Milton scored its first run on a bases loaded walk by Brad Russian.  Mike Davis tossed the first 5 2/3 innings on 90 pitches; he struck out 6 and allowed only one hit.  Adam Friedberg recorded the final out in the top of the sixth and earned the win.  Jonathan Carrera had two hits for Milton while Billy Keane had the lone knock for Braintree National (2-2).  Sean Casey tossed the first five innings and allowed only one run on four hits. 

Hingham National    4  Canton                   1     

 Dave Hutchins single-handily helped to keep Hingham National (3-1) alive.  Hutchins pitched the first 5 2/3 innings (93 pitches) with eight strike outs and with the bat had two hits including a solo homerun in the third to put his team on top 1-0.  Later in the inning Nick Barrett added a 2-run blast.  Joe Roddy got the final out to earn a save, and Andrew Fisher had two hits for Hingham.  Griffin Jerrier and Kevin Doddy each had two hits for Canton (1-2). 

Braintree American   13  Sharon                      2     

 Bobby McNiff tossed a complete game, one hitter, on 85 pitches with nine strikeouts.  Nick Valicenti added a 2-run homerun in a sloppy defensive game by Sharon (1-2).  Alec Shuster had the lone hit for Sharon.

 Cohasset              13   Holbrook/Avon         3     

Cohasset (2-1) scored eight runs in the second inning and never looked back as it eliminated Holbrook/Avon (2-2).  Charlie Blackington tossed all four innings in the game that was called due to the 10-run rule.  Blackington struck out five, and with the bat he went 3 for 4 with three runs scored including a double.  Charlie Michalowski also had three hits for Cohasset including a 2-run home run and six runs batted in.  Chris Haggerty (3 hits) and Pat Holway (2 hits) also produced on the offensive side.  Holbrook/Avon got three hits from Kevin Curley and two each from Trevor O’Brien and Joe Smith.
