Marymount is in First Place in Sunshine League
1st place_2

Playing 9 games & winning 1 championship in the St. Monica tournament, Marymount finally played their 1st league game against league rival, Notre Dame Academy. In an exciting league game, Marymountjumped out to an early first inning 2 to 0 lead. With 2 outs, Megan Blank hit a single down the 3rd base line. Keeley Abram followed with a double which got away from the leftfielder allowing Keeley to score also.

NDA answered back in the bottom of the 2nd inning to tie the score.
In the top of the 3rd, Megan again hit a single to center. Keeley was safe on a sacrafice bunt & the next batter had an infield hit to load the bases. Catcher, Ali Griffiths, got the rbi with a grounder to the shortstop & Megan scoring.

The score stayed 3 to 2 until the 5th when Megan was safe at first on an error by the 3rd baseman. Keeley Blasted her 1st home run of the season over the leftfielders head to make the scor 5 to 2.

Luisa deCarteret had one of her 3 hits leading off the 6th inning followed by Shannon O'Neill's base on balls. The next batter was safe attempting to sacrafice thus loading the bases for Megan. Megan hit a sharp grounder to the shortstop who threw home trying to force the sliding runner. The catcher dropped the ball for an error allowing the run. Keeley then smashed a triple to right center field clearing the bases. Ali knocked in the 6th run of the inning with a single to right center. Marymount took an 11 to 2 lead going into the bottom of the 6th when NDA scored 4 runs.

In the 6th, Megan got her 3rd hit & stold her 3rd base of the game. Keeley then broke the school record with her 8th rbi of the game knocking in Megan for the Sailors 12th run.

Pitcher, Hayley Schultz, had a tough game winning her 8th game. Hayley & her teammates had 'testing' all week & most were very tired.

The Sailors are now leading the Sunshine League with a 1 & 0 record. Marymount's overall record is 8 wins & 1 loss.

Two Marymount players earn All-CIF recognition

Two softball players at Marymount High School earned all-CIF (California Interscholastic Federation) recognition this season. Pitcher Andrea Lyons, the team's only senior, was selected to the all-CIF first team. Freshman Megan Blank earned all-CIF second team honors this season.

Lyons, who is headed to the University of Arizona in the fall, finished with an earned run average of 1.13 and led the Sunshine League with 163 strikeouts while starting 18 of the team's 29 games.

She was named the MVP (Most Valuable Pitcher) of the Sunshine League and was also chosen as MVP of the Marymount High Sailors team, as she helped lead the team to consecutive league titles during her junior and senior years.

Blank was one of only three freshmen on the team and started at shortstop throughout the season. She led the league in home runs and steals and had the highest batting average on the team at .512. Megan was chosen the Sunshine League's MVP (Most Valuable Player).

The Sailors finished the season with an overall record of 22-7 and won the league championship with a 7-1 record.

2008 Claremont College Softball: Young, Talented

The 2008 softball season is underway and the young, loaded team has started well.  After a resounding sweep of Cal State East Bay in their home opener (10-3, 22-0), the Athenas split with seventh-ranked University of Redlands in their SCIAC opener (1-4, 6-5)

Both doubleheaders were well played and allowed every player on the roster to see action.  In fact, after just four games, 15 of the 18 players have either gotten a hit or scored a run.

The balanced offensive attack has proved difficult for opponents to combat.  CMS has outscored their opponents 39-12 and outhit them 41-29.  A team batting average of .383, a slugging percentage of .589 and an on-base percentage of .480 keeps the free-swinging Athenas confident and excited when coming to the plate.

Leading the team in several categories is freshman phenom Gizelle Pera (Los Angeles [pictured]).  The Marymount High product is batting .500 while reaching base at a .625 clip.  Freshman Katerine Yale (Yorba Linda) is also hitting well and is tied with Pera with six runs scored while pounding out three triples and a double to lead the team with 12 total bases.

Marymount Wins first CIF Softball Game in School History
The Marymount Sails were ready to play and that they did. Archer High School was to be Marymount's first opponent in the 2006 CIF first round of games but due to prior commitments they had to withdraw from the playoffs. Old Nemesis, Brentwood high school took Archer's place and won the toss from home team.
The fifth game of Maymount's season was against their traditional rival with Brentwood winning 4 to 0. 'Focus' became a key word all season for the Sailors. As the young team matured they they became more determined to improve. Now they were to play Brentwood again. The pre-game warmup became 'showtime' & the 'girls of the seas'
were shining.
Scoring 5 runs in the 2nd inning were quite enough for a victory but 2 more in the 6th became insurance. The girls got a little to loose in the bottom of the 7th allowing Brentwood to score 3 runs.
With the win the 2006 Marymount girls were the first in school history to win a CIF playoff game.

Marymount Clinces a 3rd Place Trophy in their Second Tournament in a Row
In March of 2007, the Marymount Sailors Softball team captured their 1st trophy in school history by finishing in 3rd place in the first annual Whittier H S tournament.  In the Sailors first tournament of 2008 (St. Monica tournament), the girls brought back to Marymount another 3rd place trophy. Two wins on the first weekend of the tournament against Serra & Leuzinger High Schools moved the 'Boaters' into the top 4 teams with a shot at 1st place.
Friday night's action against a very strong CIF Division II team, Long Beach Wilson (4300 students), brought a small amount of 'sadness'. But actually the team did well by 'holding' the Wilson team to only 8 runs. Wilson had scored 31 runs in their 2 pool games the previous week. The 'experience' of playing against the six footers only made the Sailors better prepared for Saturday's 3rd place game against the tournament's host team, St. Monica.
In 2006, Coach Clark's first year at Marymount, the St. Monica Div IV team knocked the Sailors into a 7th place finish. This year was different. With more experience & depth (and without 3 starters), the girls of Marymount 'took it to them'. With Senior, Andrea Lyons on the mound, the Sailors got revenge & had a 'mercy' win against St. Monica, 8 to 0 to get another 3rd place trophy.
Perhaps a tournament championship would have belonged to Marymount if the strong Wilson team had not entered. But you have to win all your games to get the trophy. Marymount is poised & ready for their next tournament in Pasadena in the Alverno tournament after Easter break, March 29th & April 5th.

Marymount Takes 3rd Place in Whittier Tournament
The opponent was big school, Calabasas & the 'prize' was 3rd place in the 1st annual Whittier Tournament. Marymount did not want to be denied their first softball trophy in school history.
With the score tied in the top of the last inning (7th), Gizelle Pera scored on a passed ball by the Calabasas catcher to put the Sailors ahead 3 to 2. Andrea Lyons had the chore of holding the opponent scoreless. Andrea continued as she had in the previous 6 innings pitching a terrific game & getting the side out for the win.
A 'surprise' after the teams shook hands was when the tournament director came out the field & presented the team with their first trophy.
Senior, Gizelle Pera, also was presented with a 'All 1st-team' medal for her outstanding play in the 4 tournament games.

   CIF - Here we come.
UCLA's Easton field was the site of the last game of the regular season against the Marlbouough Purple Mustangs. What better place to clinch a CIF berth than the home of the Bruins.
The highlight of the game was Keeley Abram's BLAST off of the UCLA's Easton field's fence. The ball hit about five feet from the top of the 210 foot center field fence giving Keeley a double.

Marymount's Win in CIF Playoff Gme is First in Schools Softball History
The Sailors of Marymount High School were focused and ready to play the Brentwood Eagles the day after the girls had a great practice. This was to be the second time in school history to play in a CIF playoff game. Many, many years ago Marymount had played and lost in the first round of a CIF playoff game. This time it was not going to be a loss.
In the second inning Marymount broke the game wide open. With bases loaded, Pitcher Andrea Lyons, scored on an error by the Eagle 3rd baseman. Still with bases loaded Joselyn Alvarado pulled a 'screaming' line drive down the 3rd base line for a triple bringing in 3 more runs. With Joselyn on 3rd base Gizelle Pera lifted a high fly ball to left field & Joselyn scored after tagging up.
Keeley Abram & Claire Bastis each singled to start the 7 inning. They were sacrificed by Hannah Zimmerman. Lauren Ivey drove the ball back through the middle with 2 outs scoring Keeley & Claire to make the total 7 runs.
Brentwoods scoring came to late in the bottom of the 7th. The Eagles scored 3 unearned runs to make the final 7 to 3.
Everyone on the Marymount team contributed to the win. Beside's Joselyn's triple she also had a single & was hit by a pitch. Gizelle had 2 great sacrifices, one a bunt & the other the high fly ball. Marie Hopkins came through for the big blue team with 2 singles beating the throws to 1st base. Sally Hilton made a running catch in the 4th inning. Allison Nelson, although with an injured shoulder, cheered her teammates with encouragement. Christina Molloy, as the team manager & player has recently taken up the scorekeeping chore. Danielle Pera scored an important run in the second inning. Claire was 2 for 4.
Marymount will travel again on Friday to play Alverno High School.

Marymount to Play at UCLA's Easton Field on May 11
Coach Clark examined the UCLA softball schedule & saw that the Bruins were playing in Oregon during the second week of May. Marymount has a 'Home' contest against Marlborough on Thursday, May 11 so Clark requested the use of Easton field & it was granted. Marymount is inviting all friends, fans, neighbors, teachers, family & homeless to attend the final game of the season. The stadium should be large enough.

Spring Break Sleepover
The girls of Marymount high school tradionally have a two week spring break so what better way to celebrate than to have a 'martini' party & sleepover at Lauren Ivey's home. Look at Chrissy's eyes (in the front row, second from the left) & you will see that she is quite ready for the sleep portion.
Before having Mexican food for dinner, the girls shot some hoops, danced, sang & finally did some girly stuff like 'high lighting' Gizelle's hair & fixing braids for Lauren. They also played around with some paraffin wax to soften their hands & feet. Still 'feeling' the effects of the 'before dinner cocktails', Sally fell in.
As dusk arrived the girls decided to go for a walk around the neighborhood. Of course they took enough chalk to put grafetti on the walls & sidewalks (ha ha).
After dinner the girls were worn out so they watched themselves being chased on 'Cops'. No, they really watched the 'Wedding Date'.
Overall, they had so much fun that now they are planning another party at the Pera's at the end of the season.

    Desert & L A - What are the differences?

   Let's start with the weather:
Awaken in the desert and look out your window to a blue sky & majestic
mountains. Water - there may be a few 'sprinkles' in late January or February.
L A : Wake up and look out a window & all you see are big, tall apartment
buildings & overcast. Water - it's what comes out of the overcast. The people
call it 'rain' and it happens half the time.

   Clothing (or dress):
City councils in the desert pass rules that a person can be arrested for wearing
a tie, let alone a suit.
In L A you have to wear a suit or top coat because it is so cold.

   Traffic (the #1 difference) :
Walking or running in the desert, a person can cross any major street at anytime
and perhaps pick up a coin laying in the middle.
Try that in L A & you may end up in a grave.
Desert driving is relaxed & casual. You can get someplace in about 10 minutes.
Big city driving - You had better picked the correct intersection to turn left
with a left turn arrow or you will be there for 25 min (reading a book). Rules
for L A driving are that only 2 cars can turn left after the signal has gone
from yellow to red (sometimes 3 - but you are taking a chance).
Freeways - forget it. Trying to drive back to the desert one evening took 5
hours. It takes 4 1/2 hrs to drive to Vegas. Might as well go have some fun.

Comments From the 3rd Base Box
This section is new & will be 'comments, opinions, ideas, etc from Coach, Dave Clark concerning softball, sports in general, life or anything that YOU, the fan, would like discussed.

   Today's discussion subject: UCLA Basketball.
Knowing that it was practically impossible to drive home to Rancho Mirage in the desert, the 3rd Base Coach asked for advice about the local, West L A sites to watch the NCAA championship game on Monday evening. New York Pizza Parlor on Santa Monica Blvd had been the 'hangout' to watch the UCLA - Gonzaga game. The place holds about 30 people and usually there are about 10-15 'Locals' enjoying a nice pasta dinner. But for the UCLA - Gonzaga game the place was full. About 20 UCLA students put their tables together to create their own cheering (& drinking) section. It was a great place to watch the Bruins win.
Now the championship game. Discussing sites in the Marymount Coaches office with track & field coach, Lasan and swim coach Tia, it was suggested to just WALK ACROSS THE STREET to PAULEY PAVILION. DUUUUHHHHHHHH   So Coach C leaves his car PARKED AT MARYMOUNT & proceeds to walk to Pauley. EIGHT minutes later he arrives to see 8000 students lined up to enter the pavilion. Laughing as he passed the bronze Bruin with an air-blown alligator stuffed in it's mouth, the Coach 'cut' into the line (nobody cared - it's free admission). Finding a front row seat in the upper level (bleachers & seats on the main floor were closed off) the coach looked straight ahead into one of the 6 giant tv screens. The UCLA band was on the main floor along with the cheerleaders & song girls. What a scene. What a great place to watch the game.
It was sad to lose.
