Brenda Frese – Head Coach

After an incredible 2006 season, Head Coach Brenda Frese, can now write National Champion along with her signature. The fifth youngest coach in NCAA history to win a national title and only the ninth to win on her first trip to the Final Four, Coach Frese has built a championship team through hard work, successful recruiting, and a positive atmosphere.

Terp fans knew they were in for a treat when, in just her second season at the helm, Frese took Maryland to an unexpected run to the second round of the NCAA Tournament and the programs first tournament victory in 12 years. The young Terrapin team continued to generate excitement and load up the win column with Brenda Frese and her staff leading the way. By Frese's third season, the Terrapins cracked the Top 25 ranking, and closed out the year by once again advancing to the second round of the NCAA Tournament and with a #24 year end ranking. The early successes helped to lay the foundation for what would become a truly special fourth season for Coach Frese at Maryland- a season that culminated in a thrilling overtime victory and National Championship for the Terps! Now in her fifth season, Coach Frese continues to be commited to her philosophy based on hard work and maintaining an atmosphere to foster continued successes.
Coach Frese began coaching at the Division 1 collegiate level in 1994. She was an assistant coach at Kent State before moving on to Iowa State. She continued to gain valuable experience before taking the Head Coaching position at Ball State for the 1999-2000 season. It was at Ball State where she earned her reputation for turning programs around. From there, she continued on to Minnesota where she was awarded the AP National Coach of the Year and the Big 10 Coach of the Year, after a season that saw her team go from 8-20 the year before, to posting a 22-8 record and an NCAA Tournament appearance.
Coach Brenda Frese's run at Maryland began with the 2002-2003 season. Since that time, Terp fans have enjoyed Maryland teams that feature high powered, fast paced offenses that generate excitement and wins. She has challenged teams to set the standard for excellence at the highest possible level and the teams have accepted and will continue to accept her challenges!
