U13
WOW, another season is finished, and what a great ride it was. The coaches could not have been prouder of a team. The players were great all season, and we will miss the time we had with them.
To the players that will be moving to U-15 next year, the coaches will be watching very closely, as we hope that they will continue to learn and grow in the sport.
To the players who will be moving up to U-13 next year, we are excited to see you join our team next year. We know that you have been coached very well, and as coaches, we know we have a lot to live up to.
To the current U-13 players who will be staying with the team, we expect that you will continue to learn and grow and be ready for next year, as you have alot to live up to after this season.
MBYLL Jamboree 14 June
The U-13 participated in the MYBLL Jamboree, and although it was raining, we had a great time.
The team played Wellesley in the first game and won 6-2. Ben Hettinger played goal, and the team played on of its better games of the year offensively and defensively.
The second game, saw a depleted team take on a great Medfield team and lost 8-2. Billy Doherty played his best game in goal all year, and tried his best to keep the team in the game.
The third game was a close game versus Westford, but lost 6-3. Cory Kasperowicz stepped up when we needed him, and played his first ever game in goal and played marvelously.
Four U-11 players had the opportunity to play “up” with the U-13 team during the Jamboree. Nick Melanson and Tyler Adkins played the first game, and Matt Allen and Christian McKinnon played in the third game. They played very well, and we look forward to seeing them next year.
We also would like to take this time to thank all of the parents who had the envious task of waking up 5th and 6th graders for 9:30 Saturday practices, and for getting them to all to the games. Your efforts are well appreciated.
Please be on the lookout for the Fall lacrosse clinic and get all of your friends to come out. We need more 5th and 6th graders to help us grow the sport in the city.
U15
June 14 - MBYLL Jamboree
It was a very, cold, wet day of lacrosse for the Jamboree this year. The U15 team started bright and early and faced a very impressive list of teams. This year Acton-Boxborugh, Natick and Newton were the Marlborough draws. Though the competition was tough, the Marlborough team showed frequent good patience on offense and periods of very solid defense.
Goals were hard to come by for the Orange and Black on this rainy Sunday morning but the ones that were scored were quite spectacular. Joe Gilchrest and Bryan Stipek worked a give and go for a highlight reel goal. Josh Daigle scored his first of the year on a sizzling unassisted play where he beat three defenders to take the shot (incidentally Josh hit 75 mph on the radar gun during our fastest shot competition). Derek Brodeur took another pass from Joe Gilchrest and switched hands for a nifty left-handed bounce shot goal too.
The goalie duties were split between Matt Gatzunis and Connor Bentley who have stepped up to learn the position this year and made big improvements to their games. Midfield play has improved throughout the season and all of the middies worked hard Sunday and showed the never quit attitude that was the trademark of this years team. With a majority of the team returning next year and a good group of talent coming from U13 the next season looks very positive.
Bryan Stipek, Josh Daigle and Ryan Schwartz played their last games for the youth program, as they will be moving on to 9th grade next year. The coaches and remaining players wish them luck and thank them for their hard play this year. We are looking forward to hearing about their next accomplishments. Finally, the coaches thank the players and parents for another season of learning and playing lacrosse.
A lot of discussion on Sunday about an amazing goal at the Cannons' game Saturday night. This isn't the same one but Mikey Powell can do the same move justice (now try it with a long pole and you'll match Saturday's move).
