Q. Who is eligible to play?
A. Children in grades 2 through 8, and not exceeding the age eligibility.
Q. Do you have a boys program and a girls program?
A. Currently we have a boys program, where girls are encouraged to play through the U13 level. We hope to establish a girls program in the future, but no definitive plans at this time.
Q. When does the season begin?
A. The game season begins in early April and runs through mid June.
Q. When do practices begin?
A. Practice begins in mid February as long as indoor gym time can be arranged. To date, we have been fortunate to secure space at the Middle School gym for 3 sessions each week. Outdoor practice begins as soon as we are cleared to use the fields in the spring and are generally at Ward Park.
Q. When are the games played?
A. There is a minimum of 8 games scheduled for each team and they are typically played on Sunday afternoons. Additional games are scheduled during the week at the discretion of each town. There is also a Jamboree sponsored by Massachusetts Bay Youth Lacrosse in June of each year.
Q. What is the Jamboree?
A. The Jamboree is a fun family day of lacrosse where more than 8,000 lacrosse players from all over Massachusetts play lacrosse over the course of two weekends. Each lacrosse program is scheduled for one day only, where the teams will play a series of 3 games throughout the day. We will announce our date and scheduled times later in the spring season.
Q. Are there games on Mother’s Day or other holidays?
A. Yes there is a game on Mother’s Day, we do not play on Memorial Day weekend. We do plan to play both Sundays of April vacation.
Q. Where are the games played?
A. The Marlborough Youth Lacrosse home field is at Ward Park. Away games are played at the hosting teams fields, which will be announced when the schedule is released.
Q. Why are sign-ups in November and December?
A. Marlborough Youth Lacrosse is part of the Massachusetts Bay Youth Lacrosse League (MBYLL). There are more than 100 area towns and cities with more than 8000 kids playing in Massachusetts. We are required to declare the number of teams we will field, the age groups and preliminary rosters no later than mid-January. Therefore, registration must be complete so that we can determine our submissions to MBYLL.
Q. How many players are there on each team?
A. Each team can have as many as 23 to 25 players per team. Currently we field 1 team in each age group. This is subject to change based on total registration. Registration is on a first come basis so consider registering as early as possible.
Q. Can I request that my child play for a specific team or age group?
A. Placement on teams is determined by grade and not to exceed the age limitation for each category. These regulations have been set forth by US Lacrosse and MBYLL for the benefit of all players participating in the program. If we field more than one team in an age group, we will hold a skills clinic to balance the playing ability among the teams. To be fair, there is no guarantee that your child will be placed on a particular team, or with a particular friend.
Q. What does the registration fee cover?
A. The registration fee covers several things. First, each player and coach is required to be a member of USLacrosse, the national governing body of the sport. A portion of the registration fee covers the membership for each player, providing supplemental insurance coverage which is required for all players prior to playing or practicing.
There are registration fees with MBYLL for each team that plays as well as additional player fees for the annual Jamboree.
Other costs covered by fees include but are not limited to uniforms, equipment needs like balls, nets, air horns, field maintenance and more.
Finally, one the most important expenses is paying for qualified referee’s for each game. This is required and essential for the safety of the players as well as the integrity and enjoyment of the game. We schedule at least 8 games per team, per season all of which require paid referees.
Q. Do I need to purchase equipment?
A. Yes, each player will need the following:
Q. Is there a way to purchase an equipment package at a discount?
A. Yes, each year we secure bids from various suppliers to provide an equipment package that meets the needs of our players and lacrosse program. You can find this years vendor information on the links page of the web site.
Q. How do I volunteer to help?
A. Volunteers are essential to the success of the lacrosse program. Currently we are seeking coaches and various committee volunteers. If you would like to help, no amount of time or effort is too small. Contact us at info@marlboroughlacrosse.com .
