2007 Tour of the Himalayas - Pakistan
What an epic week in the Himalayas! I felt very fortunate to be a part of this event and to spend time with an incredible group of people - racers, organizers, volunteers and meeting locals. How cool was it to be amongst racers from eight different countries and we all got along superbly... It was definitely a hearty person that needed to make this trip as it was an adventure with many different unexpected variables thrown at us. It was best to be "relaxed" with the ever-changing agenda and dealing with "Pakistani time" of getting things underway - eventually! There was a day where we weren't sure when we would get our next meal... though not once did anyone complain. Racers faced stomach illness and persevered to participate in the event. Comradry was key and learning that Pakistan is a great country to visit despite the ongoings in the political world we see in the news.
The Tour of the Himalayas is a 3-day mountain bike stage race with eight international teams from Australia, Canada, Denmark, Germany, Great Britain, Holland, New Zealand and Pakistan comprised of 3 men and 2 women.
This race is put on as a benefit for the victims of the devastating earthquake Oct 2005. All funds generated from this race will go to the Kaghan Memorial School Project of the Kaghan Memorial Trust with the sole immediate objective of setting up and operating a school in Kawai that will provide free education of a high standard to underprivileged girls and boys from the Kaghan valley. The Kaghan Memorial School will be dedicated to the memory of the thousands of children lost their lives to the earthquake when their schools collapsed on top of them on October 8, 2005.
Much appreciation to Khurram Khan, the organising committee, and volunteers for allowing us the opportunity to be part of this incredible event. The race was organised by The Kaghan Memorial Trust in partnership with the Federal Ministry of Tourism of Pakistan, and was made possible through generous contributions and sponsorships by Sui Southern Gas Company Limited (SSGC), Pakistan Tourism Development Corporation (PTDC), Pakistan State Oil (PSO), ABN AMRO Bank, LMKR Resources, Lucky Cement, Standard Chartered Bank, Pepsi, Coke International, Telenor and the Pakistan Red Crescent Society.
