Manual Field Hockey: Varsity Game Summaries

Saturday, October 24
Mercy 2, Manual 1 in OT (opening round of state tournament)

The Manual varsity field hockey girls opened state-tournament play against Mercy by taking an early 1-0 lead.  The first goal came after six minutes of play when Reagan Lauder passed the ball to Ellen Riley inside the circle.  Ellen, as she often does, created havoc around her.  Somehow, she passed the ball past several defenders down to Rebecca Russell who popped the ball high into the back of the net to make the score 1-0.  That’s where the score stayed until nearly the end.  With 2:46 left in the game, Mercy worked the ball across the field, got the ball inside the top of the circle and scored to tie the game at one apiece.  The Crimsons fought back quickly getting a penalty corner with about 30 seconds left in the game.  Ellen got off a shot, but couldn’t convert.  The game then went into overtime, and after only one minute of play Mercy got a corner, which they were able to convert into a goal, giving Mercy a 2-1 victory.  It was an evenly fought game.  Both teams had five penalty corners after regulation play.  Mercy got it’s 6th in overtime.  For our girls, it was a disappointing end to a great season.  Their overall record was 16-7-1, which included 14 shut outs.  They were a special team to watch all year long.  Thanks for all the fun.

Manual 4, Presentation 0 (district championship)

The Manual field hockey team won the district championship and bid a fond farewell to Rachel Baker Field for the 2009 year with a solid 4-0 win over Presentation.  While the win was convincing, the start of the game was a little shaky with Pres getting a penalty corner and few shots on goal within the opening minutes.  But the defense – with Lauren Heavrin in goal flanked by Anna Spalding and Molly Makela with Sidney Sprawls in the middle – held their ground and quickly turned the momentum in favor of Manual.  Our first goal came after only three minutes of play when Reagan Lauder passed the ball to Ellen Riley inside the circle.  Ellen took it to the goalie then tapped the ball into the left side of the cage.  The game’s second goal came off a penalty corner.  Ellen received the insert pass and shot, but it was Molly Gerrish who got a stick on the ball to deflect it into the goal giving Manual a 2-0 lead.  Another penalty corner led to our third goal as Katie Fenzel launched a rocket from just inside the circle.  The ball glanced off a few Pres sticks but that didn’t stop it from going in the goal.  The game’s fourth and final score looked like a basketball 3-on-2 fast break.  Ellen took the ball up field to the top of the circle with a defender on her.  The two forwards, Rebecca Russell and Becca Jackowitz separated perfectly just ahead of Ellen.  The other defender chose to cover Becca on the left, leaving Rebecca open on the right.  Ellen made the pass to Russell who shot and scored.  Katie had a particularly good game as she ran from goal line to goal line and controlled the middle of the field.  She was rewarded by being named to the all-tournament team, along with Ellen and star defender Molly Makela.  The defense was once again stellar by recording their 14th shut out of the year.  Congratulations to coaches Terri Kendall and April White for winning their 2nd straight district crown.

Tuesday, October 20
Manul 5, Holy Cross 0

The varsity girls put in their strongest performance since returning from Chicago three weeks ago as they opened district play with a 5-0 win over Holy Cross.  Defensively, it was Manual’s 13th shutout of the year.  Offensively, we had a balanced attack with four girls scoring.  Rebecca Russell put Manual on the scoreboard thanks to an assist by Ellen Riley.  Reagan Lauder got the second goal when she got the ball deep in the circle, took one dribble, waited for the goalie to commit, then shot past her.  The third goal was scored by Ellen from straight away as her shot went airborne – Reagan took a swipe at it and missed, but the ball still got past the goalie.  About five minutes into the second half, Ellen got two consecutive shots on goal, scoring on one.  The final goal of the game came off a strong and long shot by Mo Riley which Kelsi White got her stick on to deflect the ball into the goal cage.  Manual had an amazing 30 shots on goal (the game log below looks like a shootfest) with 7 corners.  Holy Cross had only one corner.

Note:  Defensive plays don’t get noted often in the game log, so give credit to all defenders for a great game: Hannah Coryell, Anna Spalding, Molly Makela, Mo Riley, Sydney Sprawls, Adrienne Mekus, Shea Jennings and goal keepers Alice Morrison and Lauren Heavrin (hope no one was left out)

Assumption 2, Manual 0

Assumption 2, Manual 0

October 15, 2009

The 2009 regular season came to an end Thursday night in a hard-fought game against Assumption.  The Rockets took a 1-0 lead when they scored on a penalty corner seven minutes into the game.  Later in the first half, Manual appeared to tie game on a play in which several of our players were inside the circle pushing the ball toward the goal.  AHS’s GK deflected the ball which appeared to stop right on the goal line.  The ref called a corner instead of a goal.  With time running out in the first half, AHS got a corner which they converted into a goal for 2-0 lead.

In the second half, Manual controlled the ball, getting 8 corners compared to AHS’s 2.  But the Rocket defenders were always quick coming out of the goal cage, often denying us a shot. In the end, AHS got a 2-0 win.  But think back to last year.  Manual played Assumption tough in the regular season and lost.  But in the state tournament, we prevailed.  Maybe it’ll be “déjà vu all over again” just in case we face each other one more time.

Manual enters district play with an overall record of 14-6-1 (8-4 regular season, 9-2-1 tournament play).

Tuesday, October 13
Manual 2, Holy Cross 1

After two weeks without a game, Manual’s varsity girls eked out a 2-1 win over Holy Cross.  The stats show that the game was not as close as the score indicates.  We had about 24 shots on goal and 10 corners.  But give Holy Cross credit.  They’re a gutsy team that wouldn’t back down.  And their goalie played an amazing game.

Give our game ball to Molly Makela.  She was a star on offense and defense, scoring one of our goals playing a big role in keeping Holy Cross out of the circle.  Our other score came in the first half when Becca Jackowitz was near the right side of the goal and took a soft shot toward the left post, where it appeared Mattie DeAngelis deflected the ball into the goal.  Our overall record improves to 14-5-1.

Manual 4, Presentation 0

Give the Manual defense another goose egg.  The varsity girls held Presentation scoreless as they returned home for a 4-0 win after playing six games on the road in less than a week.  Mattie DeAngelis put the Crimsons on top early with a goal scored in traffic.  The game’s second goal was so good it should’ve been on ESPN.  Matti D. passed the ball past midfield to Ellen Riley who was moving forward fast.  She dribbled then passed farther upfield to Molly Gerrish who was all alone.  Molly quickly took ball into the circle, waited for the goalie to commit left then shot right – bingo.  Score, 2-zip.  With about 10 minutes left in the half, Ellen got the ball down low in the circle, took one dribble then shot as the goalie tried to attack – Yahtzee – 3 to nothing.  With five minutes left till halftime, Manual got two corners in a row.  On the second, the ball bounced off several sticks until it ended up in front of Kelsi White who scored – Superfecta (OK, this is the cheesiest write-up ever).  The 4-0 halftime margin would end up being the final score as Manual’s regular season record improves to 7 and 3 with an overall record of 13-5-1.  www.eteamz.com/manualhockey

KCD 6, Manual 4 in OT + tie-breaking strokes

The varsity game Tuesday between Manual and Country Day came down to a battle of flicks.  Both teams were somewhat road weary having just played each other over the weekend in Chicago.  This time, the game was on KCD’s slow-moving turf.  In the first half, the Bearcats had the edge getting seven corners to our none.  But the half ended scoreless.  In the second half, the action was mostly in the middle of the field as high grass and tired legs seemed to slow the game down stopping both teams from mounting big offensive threats.  The second half corner count was 3-2 in favor of Manual.  But the game ended in a 0-0 tie creating a 10-minute overtime.  Still, no one scored, despite KCD getting seven penalty corners in OT.  Manual’s defense put in another tough performance getting yet another shut out.  KCD had 16 corners in the game resulting in hardly any shots.  But the game still wasn’t over.  Each team got five penalty strokes to break the tie.  Mo Riley, Katie Fenzel and Sidney Sprawls scored on flicks.  But KCD countered with three goals too making the first flick-off 3-3.  In the second FO, Mo scored first, but it turned out to be Manual’s last goal while KCD got three to win the game.  Final score, 6-4 with all goals coming from tie-breaking flicks.

Manual takes 2nd in Chicago Huskie Tournament

Huskie Tournament in Chicago, Sep 25-26

1-1 tie w/3-2 loss on flicks vs. Mercy (Huskie championship game)

1-0 win vs. Kentucky Country Day (Huskie semifinal)

4-0 win vs. Villa Duchesne of Illinois (Huskie pool game)

3-0 win vs. Stevenson of Illinois (Huskie pool game)

0-0 tie vs. Ballard (Huskie pool game)

Louisville teams practically dominated the Huskie Tournament in Chicago (Sept 25-26) with Manual, Mercy and KCD winning their pools while Ballard and Assumption finished second in their pools. The championship game came down to Manual and Mercy which ended in a 1-1 tie.  Ellen Riley scored Manual’s sole goal off a corner when she received the insert pass at the top of the circle and shot.  A few minutes later, Mercy scored to tie the game.  It was the only goal allowed by Manual’s defense during the entire tournament.  The game came down to strokes.  Katie Fenzel and Molly Makela both scored on their flicks.  But we were out-flicked 3-2.

In the semifinal game against KCD, Manual’s Becca Jackowitz scored off a penalty corner with six minutes left to play for the game’s only goal.

Pool play started Friday night as our girls went straight from the bus to the field taking on Ballard.  Both defenses were stingy giving up no goals for 0-0 tie.  The number of penalty corners was very low with Manual getting 3 versus Ballard’s 1.

Saturday morning, a rested Manual team came out firing by handily beating two Illinois teams, Stevenson and Villa Duchesne by scores of 3-0 and 4-0 respectively.  Goals were scored by Mattie DeAngelis 1, Katie Fenzel 2, Ellen Riley 2 and Rebbecca Russell 2.  Assists go to Kelsi White, Ellen, Becca J., Reagan Lauder and Mo Riley.

The Crimson defense was outstanding from beginning to end, anchored by starters Anna Spalding, Molly Makela, Hannah Coryell and goalie Alice Morrison as well as Sidney Sprawls, Adrienne Mekus, Shea Jennings and Lauren Heavrin.

Offensive players Evie Dentinger, Hana Kuwabara and Molly Gerrish also had a great tournament.

Head coach Terri Kendall was assisted by JV coach Kim Roberts who made the trip along with several JV players who contributed:  Kelsee Bryant, Hannah Dabbagh, Emily Ducas, Nicole Lauterbach and Amanda Vance.  (Hope no one is being left out).  Congratulation to Terri, Kim and the gang.

Manual has five shutouts in the past six games.  This year’s record including tournament play is 12-4-1.

Tuesday, September 22
Manual 2, Christian Academy 0

Manual’s varsity field hockey team honored its 12 senior players Tuesday night, then went on to defeat Christian Academy 2-0 in a rain shortened game.

The best defense is a good offense, and that was especially true during the first half for the Crimsons as they controlled the ball getting 10 penalty corners compared to CAL’s none.  One corner resulted in a goal when Becca Jackowitz took the insert pass and fired a shot down the middle.  It was blocked by several defenders but ended up in front of Hana Kuwabara who was open on the left side and slammed the ball into the back of the board.

Manual’s second goal came with about five minutes to go in the half when Katie Fenzel showed amazing stick skills as she dribbled through several defenders inside the circle then finessed the ball by the goalie.

Rain moved in 10 minutes into the second half forcing the game to an end.  Manual’s regular season record improves to 6 and 2.  The Crimson defense now has four shut outs and has allowed only 5 goals in 8 games.

Congratulations to all the seniors, most of whom have been playing together all four years, making this year’s team already one of the best in Manual history.  They are:

#6 Hannah Coryell, fiery vocal leader on defense

#17 Mattie De Angelis, sneaky smart forward who quietly makes things happen

#4 Evie Dentinger, knack for always being in right spot

#3 Katie Fenzel, lightning fast 3-yr starter and team leader

#5 Becca Jackowitz, scoring machine with a thunder stick

#14 Hana Kuwabara, fearless with tons of hustle

#7 Reagan Lauder, dribbles like a Harlem Globetrotter

#46 Molly Makela, smart defender plays best under pressure

#8 Alice Morrison, stats prove she's playing at a high level

#25 Ellen Riley, team leader born to play field hockey

#2 Anna Spalding, cat-like quickness can turn ball upfield in a flash

#27 Sydney Sprawls, incredible athlete champing at the bit

Sacred Heart 2, Manual 1

Who needs UK and U of L football?  The Manual-Sacred Heart field hockey game had more hard-fought action than we’ll see in Lexington this weekend.

Both teams came out running, hustling and swinging.  The intensity never let up.  In the end, SHA pulled out the win 2 to 1 in a battle that just could turn into rematch come state-tournament time.

The first half was a stalemate as control went back and forth.  Manual got the first corner only minutes into the game.  Then SHA, which has a knack for parlaying one corner into two or three in row, got three consecutive corners.  Goalie Alice Morrison and Manual defenders Hannah Coryell, Anna Spalding and Molley Makela with help from midfielder Mo Riley held their ground and denied SHA any more corners the rest of the half.  The half ended with no score as each team got three corners.

While the first half went back and forth, the second half saw each team have stretches of being in charge.  SHA gained control early getting five corners within the first eight minutes, scoring on two of them to take a 2 to 0 lead.  But momentum changed midway through the second half when Manual got an amazing six corners in row.  Even though we didn’t score, control of the game shifted to the Crimsons.  With nine minutes left to play, Manual got another corner, this time scoring.  Katie Fenzel’s insert pass went to Becca Jackowitz who passed to Ellen Riley.  Ellen was smothered but was able to pass back to Becca who finally had space to shoot, which she did with authority to tighten the game at 2 to 1.

Manual kept attacking and nearly tied the game when Ellen broke free down the left side, passing up to Becca who was one-on-one with the goalie.  Becca took a hard shot when she got inside the circle, but it was knocked OB just left of the goal.  Time eventually ran out on the Crimsons as both teams never let up -- never.  It was a great, great game.

Here are game notes in chronological order.

1st half

27:00 Reagan flips to Becca in the circle resulting in games first corner.

26:00  SHA gets three corners in row 21:00 Ellen makes a great turnaround move to get the ball in the circle to Becca.

15:00 Manual corner:  Katie to Ellen, strong shot deflected OB.

14:00 Mo and SHA player get tangled up at midfield, both go to the ground.  (btw, Mo ended up with 20 stitches inside lip and mouth and was more disappointed about the loss than the stitches!)

10:00  Anna makes one of many explosive moves in the first half to get the ball out of the circle and half way up the field on her own.

8:00  SHA is on their heels as Manual’s entire team is past midfield with Defender Molly Makela passing the ball inside the circle to Katie, who fights for position and control of the ball but is smothered by SHA players.

6:00 Kelsi White flies out of nowhere to take the ball, go past midfield, passing up to Mattie DeAngelis.

4:30  Kelsi again turns the ball upfield.
