Hockomock Summer League Information

The Hockomock Summer League is where our more competitive players ages 9-15 have an opportunity to participate.  This year, for the first time, there will be an “A” and a “B” team in age groups  9-10-11-12-13

The Hockomock travel teams are selected each June for a summer schedule that runs from the last week in June until the first week in August.  There are typically 12 players selected for the 10-11-12-13-14- and 15 year old teams  The 9 year old team typically rosters 13 players because by rule, play of a fourth outfielder is permitted.

The 9 year old team(s) are selected by tryout in early June.  The players must be invited to attend the tryout by their AA managers.  Managers are asked to recommend only those players they feel have a legitimate opportunity to earn one of the 13 roster slots on each team.  The tryout pool should be no larger than 35 candidates.  The Hockomock Representatives run the tryout and select 4-5 impartial volunteers to evaluate the players.  The tryout consists of a series of ground balls, fly balls and throws.  Each candidate also gets an opportunity to hit a series of pitched balls.  The evaluators rate the candidates using a scale of 1 thru 5 on each component of the tryout.  The top 13 scorers make the team. However some latitude is given to the Hockomock manager on the selection of the 13th player based on the specific need of their individual team.  For example, if an additional catcher has been identified as a need by the manager and the Hock committee agrees, that roster change can be considered prior to the team being announced.

The 10’s, 11’s, 12’s, 13’s 14’s and 15’s are nominated by and voted on by the managers of their respective leagues.  That is, the AAA managers nominate and vote on the 10’s, the Major League Managers the 11’s and 12’s, the Junior League managers the 13’s and the Senior League managers the 14’s and 15’s.  The top 12 players make the roster; however, as with the 13th player named on the 9 year old roster,  the same latitude is afforded the individual Hock managers with respect to the 12th player.  In order for a player to be nominated he/she must be a player in “good standing.”  Specifically each player needs to have participated in a minimum of  75%  of  their spring teams games and practices.  As a point of further clarification in order for a 10 year old to be considered for the 10 year old Hock team he must play in the AAA League.  For 11’s and 12’s to be considered for their respective Hock teams they must play in the Majors Division.  The 14 and 15 year old candidates have to play Senior League. Lastly each player/ family must understand and be willing to commit to the significant schedule that Hock requires.  Players/families who anticipate missing more than one or two games are asked to consider other summer baseball opportunities.
