SIX IN A ROW!!!!
2009 SECTION NINE
CHAMPIONS
MONROE-WOODBURY 35
WARWICK 27
MIDDLETOWN NY--It was a great night of football on the Twin Towers field in Middletown tonight as the MW Crusaders met the Warwick Wildcats for the second tme this season, this time vying for the coveted Section Nine Championship title.
The drama began at about 4pm, when a fire alarm at MW High School left the football team out in the cold for over an hour as the fire department scoured the building making sure it was safe to return to the building. The game was pushed back to 7:30 as a result.
The Wildcats got on the board first, but Monroe answered with a TD by Ryan Spelman, in as a running back, with Packy's PAT making it 7 all.
In the second quarter, Trevor Officer got a 5 yard TD making the halftime score 14-7.
Then Scalo hit Patrick Laird with a 41-yard touchdown pass.
Laird kicked the extra point. M-W was in the lead 21-7.
Then Officer scored agan from two yards out
and another successful Paird PAT made it a 28-7 game. The Crusaders may have gotten a little too comfortable then, as the Cats got a new adrenaline rush, because the 4th quarter bacame a whole new ballgame.
Rian White hit John Babin with a 19-yard TD pass.
But the kick was no good.
MW led by 28-13.
Rian White then threw to Nick Grace for a 37-yard touchdown pass. It was White's 30th touchdown pass of the season, tying the Section 9 single-season record. White then to Babin for the 2-point conversion, making the score a much closer 28-21.
Then Babin hit White for a 31 yard touchdown. But Grace's extra point was short. The score was 28-27 with just over 5 minutes left.
Then on an M-W fourth-and-9 from the Warwick 30 the Crusaders made the bold move to throw the ball -- Scalo to Laird -- Touchdown!
With under three minutes left, the Cats began working their way down the field, Crusader fans biting their nails, Warwick fans chanting loudly.
First a pass to Babin, getting Warwick to the 30. Another nice pass to Careccia on a 4th and sixth, getting Warwick to the 45. Then another throw by White, the ball was tipped by Zach Perez and intercepted by Matt Hefter, clinching the game for the Crusaders.
The Crusaders took the Section Nine title with a final score of 35-27.
Next the Crusaders meet New Rochelle for the East Region Championship Game
