Thursday, May 30 RECENT EMAILS REGARDING FLORHAM PARK TOURNEY, MAPLEWOOD GAME AND CLUB PICNIC Dear 1st and 2nd Grade Laxers, First, I'd like to remind everyone that the Florham Park Tournament is for 2nd Graders, so it follows that all twelve 2nd Grade players in the Millburn Lacrosse Club are automatically on the tournament roster. Florham Park is a 6 vs 6 (plus goalie) format, unlike the Randolph tournament (which was full field,10 vs 10). The numbers are working against us. We simply cannot bring every 1st Grader (there are 39 registered 1st Graders on our team) along to play up. For these reasons, we have arranged for a separate 1st Grade game/scrimmage vs Maplewood on Sunday. We will try to fill out the Florham Park roster by selecting, as much as possible, 1st Graders who want to play but were not able to play up the last time. This means that some 1st Graders who already played in Randolph will be asked to sit out Friday, so others can get a chance. I know they will be disappointed but we want to provide the tournament experience for as many of their teammates as we can manage- and remember, all 1st Graders will get plenty of playing time on Sunday. We will send out our final roster selections tomorrow. Please let me know if you have any questions. Thanks in advance for your understanding. Best regards, Coach Baker On May 29, 2013, at 10:42 AM, Stephen Baker wrote: > Dear 1st and 2nd Grade Laxers, > > ROAD TRIP! We have rescheduled last week's 1st Grade game/scrimmage vs Maplewood at the Columbia HS Turf Stadium (Underhill Field at Garfield Place & Burr Road in South Orange) from 2:30 to 4:00 pm on Sunday June 2. We will hand out the game uniforms at the field for those who didn't get one already. Please let me know by email if you WON'T be able to play in the 1st Grade game. The game will be an opportunity for all of the 1st Graders to show what they've learned this season in a competitive setting. 2nd Graders are welcome to attend, but our priority will be to give 1st graders playing time. > > At the conclusion of the scrimmage, we'll all head back to the MSH Lacrosse Club Picnic, which will start at 4:30 pm behind the turf stadium at Millburn HS- free hot dogs, burgers, soft drinks, and other goodies (courtesy of Manny's) and lots of lax fun (fastest shot, etc)- all MSH lax families are invited! > > I'd also like to let everyone know that I personally will not be in attendance on Friday at the Florham Park Tournament (I will be visiting my uncle in Texas for the occasion of his 100th birthday). Charlie Dwyer, the Director of Millburn Short Hills Lacrosse will be coaching in my place along with John Christmas and our volunteer dads. I'll be back in time for the Sunday game vs Maplewood. I hope everyone has a terrific tournament! > > Please let me know if you have any questions. > > Best regards, > > Coach Baker > > > PLEASE NOTE: please be prepared to hand in all game jerseys at the Picnic (you get to keep your pinneys) Sunday, May 19 TODAY'S SCRIMMAGE/PRACTICE IS CANCELED MAY 19 Dear 1st and 2nd Grade Laxers, TODAY'S 1st GRADE SCRIMMAGE/1ST&2ND GRADE PRACTICE HAS BEEN CANCELED DUE TO POOR FIELD CONDITIONS.
We will try to re-schedule sometime this week, possibly under the lights on Maplewood's turf. We'll keep you posted.

Wednesday, February 20 Welcome to the 2013 Lacrosse Season! Dear 1st and 2nd Grade Lacrosse Parents, Welcome to the Millburn-Short Hills Lacrosse Club for Boys 1st & 2nd Grade Team. (Returning 2nd Graders, it’s great to have you back!) We are excited to have you with us, and we hope to have a fun and rewarding 2013 season. Along the way, we will do our very best to help your son develop new athletic skills and an understanding of the game of lacrosse, while also instilling the values of teamwork, good sportsmanship, and respect. Scheduled Practices: we will practice outdoors on Sunday afternoons.
MARK YOUR CALENDARS: we will hold our first practice Sunday March 3rd at the High School Turf Field from 2:45 pm tp 4:00 pm.
As March weather is always unpredictable, so is our practice schedule before the season "officially" opens on April 1. Each week in March, we will let you know as early in the week as possible as to where and when we will practice on the following Sunday. There will be no practice on Sunday March 31 in observance of the Easter and Passover holidays.
From April 1 onward, we will practice at the Library Field from 2:00 pm to 3:30 every week except Memorial Day Weekend Sunday May 27 (practice on Mother's Day Sunday May 12 will be optional). This year we will occasionally hold additional practices during the school week, to concentrate on skills and development, time and dates to be determined. Stay tuned for more info, coming soon.
Equipment: Player safety is our number one priority. Lacrosse stick, helmets, gloves, elbow pads, shoulder pads, and mouth guards are required. Please outfit your son with soccer cleats, sneakers, or turf shoes, and athletic shorts. Whenever we practice outside, especially early in the season, warm dress is required (sweatpants, sweatshirts, and multiple layers). While not yet required at this level, please acquaint your son with an athletic cup. It’s not too early to get used to wearing one. Lacrosse equipment is widely available at most sporting goods stores but we strongly recommend that you check out a local specialty store such as Kicks ’n’ Sticks at the Millburn Mall on Vaux Hall Road or Thompson’s Sporting Goods in Summit.
Games: Our focus for the little guys is entirely on building skills. However, for the past three years, we have participated in 2nd Grade tournaments in Randolph and FlorhamPark, and we expect to do so again. It’s a great way to emphasize skill and sportsmanship, while not getting caught up with competitive pressure over winning or losing. Scores are not kept, there are no brackets, no champions- it’s just having fun, playing lacrosse. We’ll let you know more when we get the details later in the season. Communications via Website: The Millburn-Short Hills Lacrosse Club for Boys website address is www.eteamz.com/mshlax . All of our communication will be done via the website. We have a dedicated News tab on our website for the 1st/2nd Grade Team. Please bookmark and make a habit of checking the 1st/2nd Grade News tab regularly for the latest updates on practice times and locations. Coaches: As in years past, I’ll be your son’s head coach, along with Wally Stack and John Christmas. We also expect to have members of the Millburn High School Varsity helping out every Sunday. As have most of the other coaches in the program, I’ve played lacrosse in high school, college, and on post-collegiate clubs, so we all know and love the game. We want to teach, learn, and have fun with your kids this season. Please feel free to talk with us at any time if you’d like to discuss your son’s activities on the team. Parent Volunteers: We’d love to have you involved both on and off the field. Yes, we are recruiting! Please contact any of us to discuss what you can do to help the team and the program. Attendance: if for any reason, your son cannot attend a practice, please inform me by email, preferably the day before the practice. We understand, and frankly expect, that your son may play other organized sports that sometimes conflict with lacrosse this spring. All we ask is that you let us know in advance when your son won’t be available.
Conduct by Players, Parents and Coaches: We follow a coaching paradigm for youth sports developed at Stanford University called the Positive Coaching Alliance, and the Code of Conduct developed by US Lacrosse, the national governing body for the sport:
“Players, coaches, spectators, and parents are to conduct themselves in a manner that "Honors the Game" and demonstrates respect to other players, coaches, officials, and spectators. In becoming a member of the lacrosse community an individual assumes certain obligations and responsibilities to the game of lacrosse and its participants. The essential elements in this "Code of Conduct" are HONESTY and INTEGRITY. Those who conduct themselves in a manner that reflects these elements will bring credit to the sport of lacrosse, themselves, their teams, and their organization.”
We’ll teach the kids on the field about teamwork, respect, and fair play, and we are counting on you to help reinforce these values at home after a game or practice. Many of you know that lacrosse originated in North America hundreds of years ago as a Native American tribal ritual of great social importance: sometimes played as a form of war; sometimes as a means to settle disputes or conflicts; or sometimes, just as a game of athletic competition and enjoyment. Owing to its ancient traditions, lacrosse uniquely combines speed, skill, and the noble spirit of Native American warriors- it's an exhilarating game, and most importantly, it’s fun to play. As your son begins to learn the game this year, we hope you’ll feel the same excitement that we at Millburn-Short Hills Lacrosse Club still do. We’ll look forward to seeing you out on the practice field soon. Regards, Stephen Baker

Thursday, June 7 FRIDAY JUNE 8 MILLBURN LAX PICNIC 5:45 to 7:45 pm at the High School
Dear 1st and 2nd Grade Laxers,
This Friday afternoon/evening June 8, the Millburn Short Hills Lacrosse Club will hold its annual Team Picnic for all players, Grades 1 through 8, at the High School athletic fields, behind the Stadium seats from 5:45 pm to 7:45 pm.
There will be free hot dogs, hamburgers, soft drinks-catered by Manny's Texas Wieners- plus cookies and other goodies. All Millburn lacrosse players and their families, including siblings, are welcome to attend. There is no fee (but we will be passing the hat for voluntary donations).
There will be plenty of lacrosse fun- however, we will not be able to play our intrasquad exhibition scrimmage as I had said during our last practice (there isn't a lined field available- due to this past week's water main break).
Finally, there will be no practice this weekend- the Picnic will be our final gathering of the season. I'll have some final comments for all of our lax players in the next few days-
Please let me know if you have any questions. We're looking forward to seeing you at the Picnic!

Coach Baker

posted yesterday
Dear 1st and 2nd Grade Laxers,
The weather report says that it's going to rain overnight, tapering off to 30% chance of showers tomorrow afternoon- but since we are on grass, our situation will probably be determined by field conditions from the overnight soak. I will inspect the field tomorrow morning and make a go-no go decision no later than 12:00 noon. Please check your email around 12:15 pm for our final decision.
Let's hope that the storm dumps most of its rain before it gets to us.

Coach Baker
Thursday, March 22 UPDATE for Sunday March 25, SAVE THE DATE Friday March 30 Under the Lights!
Dear 1st and 2nd Grade Laxers,
We had a great practice last Sunday! I hope everyone had fun- I sure did, and I'd like to especially thank the dads who volunteered to assist with the drills. (Let me know if anyone else would like to help).
SAVE THE DATE: as I mentioned at Sunday's practice, on Friday night March 30, Millburn HS Head Coach Bill McCutcheon, Jr. and the Millburn HS Varsity will host a Lacrosse Clinic under the lights at the High School Stadium for all grades from 7:30 pm to 9:00 pm. Everyone is welcome (full equipment, please). For all of you parents it's worth noting that many of the HS varsity started playing lax with the Millburn Lacrosse Club as 1st and 2nd graders some 10-11 years ago, just like your boys. Class of 2012, meet the Class of 2023. More details to come next week-
Quick update: the weather for this weekend is questionable- presently the forecast calls for a 60% chance of showers and 56 degrees. Field conditions may be a problem, so we are trying once again to find a time slot for the turf fields- but so far they are fully booked. Please check your email tomorrow evening for another update. (FYI, when weather is a factor, we will make the final call around noontime on Sunday).
Plan on wearing sweatshirts and sweatpants, it will be damp and raw out there. If you are a returning 2nd Grader, it would be helpful to wear your pinney (over your sweats) from last year. We hope to scrimmage, so please make sure you have full equipment.
Please don't hesitate to call or email if you have any questions. Hope to see you Sunday.
Best regards,
Coach Baker

Wednesday, March 7 First Practice for 1st and 2nd Graders Sunday March 18, 3:00 pm to 4:00 pm , Location TBD Dear 1st and 2nd Grade Laxers, Mark your calendars! We are planning to hold our first practice on Sunday March 18, one week from this coming Sunday from 3:00 pm to 4:00 pm. We are still working on the location; we'll let you know ASAP by web and email. Please remember to have all your equipment, and dress warmly. See you next week! Coach Baker Thursday, March 1 Welcome 1st and 2nd Grade Laxers! Dear 1st and 2nd Grade Lacrosse Parents, Welcome to the Millburn-Short Hills Lacrosse Club for Boys 1st & 2nd Grade Team. (Returning 2nd Graders, it’s great to have you back!) We are excited to have you with us, and we hope to have a fun and rewarding 2012 season. Along the way, we will do our very best to help your son develop new athletic skills and an understanding of the game of lacrosse, while also instilling the values of teamwork, good sportsmanship, and respect. Practices: We plan to practice outdoors on Sunday afternoons, probably from 3:00pm to 4:00pm at a township field (location and final schedule tbd), beginning Sunday April 1st. There will be no 1st/2nd grade practice this coming weekend Sunday March 4. We do hope to fit in at least two pre-season practices on the High School turf in March, time and dates to be determined. (Millburn’s township fields are officially “closed” until April 1). Stay tuned for more info, coming soon. Games: There are no formal games played at the 1st and 2nd Grade level- our focus is entirely on building skills. However, for the past two years, we have participated in Florham Park’s 2nd Grade Lacrosse Festival, and we expect to do so again. It’s a great way to emphasize skill and sportsmanship, while not getting caught up with competitive pressure over winning or losing. The format is 6 vs 6, round robin style- scores are not kept, there are no brackets, no champions- it’s just having fun, playing lacrosse. Coaches: As in years past, I’ll be your son’s head coach. Equipment: Player safety is our number one priority. Lacrosse helmets, gloves, elbow pads, shoulder pads, and mouth guards are required. Conduct by Players, Parents and Coaches: We follow a coaching paradigm for youth sports developed at Stanford University called the Positive Coaching Alliance, and the Code of Conduct developed by US Lacrosse, the national governing body for the sport: “Players, coaches, spectators, and parents are to conduct themselves in a manner that "Honors the Game" and demonstrates respect to other players, coaches, officials, and spectators. In becoming a member of the lacrosse community an individual assumes certain obligations and responsibilities to the game of lacrosse and its participants. The essential elements in this "Code of Conduct" are HONESTY and INTEGRITY. Those who conduct themselves in a manner that reflects these elements will bring credit to the sport of lacrosse, themselves, their teams, and their organization.” We’ll teach the kids on the field about teamwork, respect, and fair play, and we are counting on you to help reinforce these values at home after a game or practice. We’ll look forward to seeing you out on the practice field soon.Regards, Coach BakerFriday, May 20 Next Practice Sunday May 22 2:45 pm to 4:00 pm Library Field FIELD CONDITIONS PERMITTING Dear 1st and 2nd Grade Laxers, Our next practice will be held this Sunday afternoon May 22 from 2:45 pm to 4:00 pm at the Library Field, FIELD CONDITIONS PERMITTING. Saturday, March 5 1st & 2nd Grade First Practice Sunday March 6 3:30 pm to 4:45 pm
Dear 1st and 2nd Grade Laxers,
Spring is here (almost)!- welcome to the 2011 Millburn Lacrosse Spring Season. This weekend, the lacrosse season begins Sunday afternoon from 3:30 pm to 4:45 pm on the Millburn High School Stadium Turf Field.
We are very excited that you have joined the Millburn-Short Hills Lacrosse Club, and we will have lots of fun together learning the great game of lacrosse. Today, I wanted to give you a a few quick reminders.
As in the past, the 1st and 2nd Graders will regularly practice on Sunday afternoons. A reminder about equipment: lacrosse helmets, gloves, shoulder and elbow pads, and mouthguards are required (hockey helmets with face guards are acceptable). Whenever we practice outside, especially early in the season, warm dress is required (sweatpants, sweatshirts, and multiple layers). That being said, right now the long-range weather forecast for Sunday is "rain and highs in the 50s". Please check the website at www.eteamz.com/mshlax and click on the "1st/2nd Grade News" tab for any last-minute cancellations or other changes to our schedule.

Thursday, March 10 First Practice Sunday March 13 on the HS Turf, 4:00pm to 5:00pm ! Please Be There at 3:45 pm
Dear 1st and 2nd Grade Laxers,
We are ready to rumble! Our first practice will be held this Sunday March 13th from 4:00 pm to 5:00 pm DAYLIGHT SAVINGS TIME on the High School Turf Field.
Please note that the field will be in use by another group until 4:00 pm, so please meet me at the scoreboard endzone at 3:45 pm sharp, so we can get organized. The practice itself will run from 4:00pm to 5:00 pm. Weather is forecasted for the low 50s, so sweatshirts and sweatpants are required. Please, no shorts or t-shirts without sweats (let's keep the kids warm and healthy, especially so early in the season). Sneakers, soccer, or turf shoes are all OK.
As previously noted, full equipment (helmet, elbow pads, gloves, stick, plus mouthguard) is REQUIRED; shoulder pads are strongly recommended, and it's not too early to introduce your son to an athletic cup. We recommend Kicks'n'Sticks at the Millburn Mall on Vaux Hall and Thompson's in Summit for all your equipment needs. Lax equipment is also available from the national sporting goods chains (Dick's, Sports Authority, Modell's), but the selection is limited.
If your son cannot make the practice for any reason, we request that you please let me know by email at least by the day before. We thank you in advance for your cooperation. Finally, we recommend that you frequently check the website ( www.eteamz.com/mshlax and click on the "1st and 2nd Grade News" tab) for any updates or last minute changes to our schedule. Please don't hesitate to email or call me at 201-452-6641 if you have any questions.
See you Sunday.
