Spirit Xcel Spring 2011

We are two Girls' U16 teams, Maryland Rush 95/Xcel and MSI Spirit Xcel (born after 8/1/1995). 

* Maryland Rush 95/Xcel competes in Colonial League.

*MSI Spirit Xcel competes in MSI Classic HS group. Spirit Xcel has 1 -2 spots available for strong players - contact Coach Kathleen or Manager Dana. Tryouts at Champions Field House turf 1 Mondays 5:30 - 7 pm or Thursdays 6 - 7:30 pm. Come meet the team!

  • Rush 95/Xcel and Spirit Xcel are stable and successful teams.  Girls on these teams also play on their HS Varsity or JV teams. All girls made their tryouts and both teams are known in the soccer community for their skills. The girls are indeed skillful players working in an environment where an understanding of the game is valued.

    Tournament plans:  Rush 95/Xcel played the Orange Classic in Ft Lauderdale this past December and were semifinalists.  Rush 95/Xcel also played Kirkwood Frederick Premier Tournament Columbus Day weekend (Champion); the CASL College Showcase Nov 18-19-20, the Kirkwood College Showcase Nov 27.  

    Previously, Rush 95/Xcel reached the semi finals in the top flight of the Columbia Fall Classic tournament 2010, losing in PKs. Rush 95/Xcel were finalists in the 2010 CASL Shootout, losing to the champion 1-0.  Rush 95/Xcel were finalists in the U15 - Elite flight of the 2010 OBGC Labor Day Tournament.  Rush 95/Xcel also reached the semi finals of the Potomac Memorial Day tournament in both 2010 and 2009, losing to the eventual champion in the semi-finals. 

    Spirit Xcel has been champions of their division several times, placed 2nd in the MSI March Madness 2010 tournament, and are always highly competitive in MSI Classic's Division 1.  

    Both teams have won multiple sportsmanship awards from their respective leagues.  Most recently, Spirit Xcel won the Spring 2010 MSI Classic Sportsmanship "Team Award" for its age group and Division.

    We would also like to acknowledge the contribution of the late, great goalie trainer Coach Alan Kelly, who worked with our goalies for several years. 

    TRAINING PHILOSPHY Coach Kathleen's training program includes an emphasis on individual decision making, team tactical development, and player creativity. Coach Kathleen has worked with girls' teams for 14 years now and has qualified for her National Regional License as well as her USYSA "D" license and her Jr., Level VI on US Club. Using a Coerver foundation, Coach Kathleen integrates drills learned from her own research and experience as well as from training and seminars she attends. Coach Kathleen offers clinics and camps over school breaks and summer.

    TEAM CULTURE Our players come from diverse public and private schools from Laurel to Chevy Chase and from Waldorf to West Bethesda. The girls enjoy learning together to improve their skills.  Coach Kathleen emphasizes being confident in one's skills and committing to support one's teammates in at atmosphere of mutual respect and appreciation. We have a tremendous group of parents and all the girls' benefit from their cheering and support.

    TRAINING SCHEDULE Click on the Calendar tab to see our team schedule. The girls work hard and are proud of their skills. We practice in Rockville, Bethesda, Potomac and occasionally Germantown. Goalies from both teams work with a goalie coach. Xcel trains Mondays and Thursdays. Spirit Xcel trains Tuesdays and Fridays. Winter, both teams practice Mondays and Thursdays in Rockville.

    TOURNAMENTS Both teams play tournaments - MSC XCEL plays several tournaments a season.  Xcel was a finalist at the 2010 OBGC Capital Cup Labor Day tournament and at the 2010 CASL Shootout.  Xcel won the Bull Run Tournament Spring 2008 and was a Semi Finalist in the 2007, 2009, and 2010's Potomac Memorial Day Tournament.  Spirit Xcel plays a tournament a season and came in 2nd in MSI's March Madness 2010.

    WINTER Both teams train over the winter and often compete in a futsal league. Team training includes conditioning, speed and agility, and injury prevention work. Coach Kathleen is familiar with the PEP and other injury prevention programs and incorporates these into her programs.

    SUMMER   Head Coach Kathleen Kerins coached the Maryland RUSH U15 Super Y team, one of only three Super Y U15 teams in Maryland. The Super Y program is part of an overall developmental program that includes Super 20 and Premier development Leagues.   We hold preseason camp in August.

    TEAM SPIRIT The girls enjoy each other's company and have been to see DC United, U of Md, Washington Freedom and the Women's US National Team play. Other socials include the occasional team pool party, bowling, or sleepover. The girls have also volunteered as ball girls for Kicks Against Breast Cancer, collected soccer gear for a youth soccer league in Iraq, and assembled gift packages for the youngest children at National Center for Children and Families in Betheda for the last four winter holidays.
