MPB SUMMER BASKETBALL 2009

Celebrating our 11th Season

######################################

The 2009 Raymond Boyle Jr Championships are here:

Congratulations to all the teams in the tournament.  The spectators saw some of the best basketball of the season and the final teams will be giving us even more.  When we finish the Championships tomorrow night we will  have played 389 games this season.  There are  64 teams and about 650 players in this league, with about 90 coaches and alot of volunteers.  This year we had a large number of Coaches and volunteers  and referees that have played in this league and are now in High School or College.  There is a list of these people by the concession stand. We owe them a big "thank you" for stepping up and getting involved. We also had other volunteer scorekeepers, referees, concession people and of course Directors.  Please thank them for all thier hard work this season.  Special thanks to Tommy Mann, Christine Farone, Jim Langton, Bruce Chapin, Tony Mazza, and the Knights of Columbus for all their hard work.

Please make sure we have your email address, so we can contact you in January about the 2010 season.  Send your email to info@mpbsummer.com if you did not register on line this season.

3 on 3 Tournament Update:  The tournament was a big sucess, raising over  $1600.00 for the Gamma Family.  There we teams at all age brackets with the biggest turnout being the 19-39 mens division with 9 teams.  There was alot of good competition, even in the over 40 group where 4 teams managed to play without anyone getting hurt.

The skill clinic presented by Marist Head Coach Chuck Martin was also very successfull.  The players who came out early before the 3 on 3 were treated to  almost 2 hours of instruction by the Hudson Valleys newest Division 1 coach.  Coach Martin coached with Jim Calipari at Memphis last year and had amazing year with only 1 loss in the regular season and an overtime loss to Kentucky in the finals.  His stories about this and his defensive clinic were informative and fun for all the players.   We are very thankful to Coach Martin for taking time out of his busy schedule to talk to our players .  His clinics are a must for any player who wants to improve thier basketball IQ and skills.

Next week is the last week of the season (monday and tuesdays games) and the first round of the playoffs (wednesday and thursdays games).  These games will all be played at the usual times.  Wednesday and thursdays games WILL BE ANNOUNCED.  Do not use the schedule for these nights.  ALL TEAMS ARE IN THE PLAYOFFS. This weekend the schedule for the friday and Saturday night will be posted.

The skill clinic will be run by Marist Head coach, Chuck Martin.  If you plan on attending and are an MPB Summer League player , please wear your team shirt in in support of the league.  This clinic is for both boys and girls ages 7-17.  Everyone will get some helpful information from Caach Martin.  The cost is $10.00 which will go to to the Gamma family.  Why not stay around and play in the 3 on 3 tournament after the clinic ???

This weeks Rain Schools:  MPB (Court B) and Wallkill (Court A and C) if we need to use them.

UPCOMING EVENTS: 3 on 3 Tournament is scheduled for Saturday July 18 from 6 until ???. All Proceeds to go to help out the Gamma family.  We will have age groups from 13-50 both male and female.  The cost will be $20 per player for under 18, and $100 per team (up to 4) for over 18.  Prior to the tournament will be a skills clinic hosted by Division 1 Marist Mens Basketball Head Coach Chuck  Martin.  This will run from 4-6.  The clinic will be for all players 7-17 and will cost $10.00.  These proceeds will also benefit the Gamma Family.  More details will follow.

Playoff Update:  The last night of the season  July 22(Wednesday) and July 23 (Thursday) are the first rounds of the playoffs.  Disregard games listed on your schedules.  The teams will be seeded based on the season records.  All Teams are in the playoffs.  It is single elimination.  Winners will advance to Saturday night Championship games. All divisions with 4 teams will send 2 remaining teams from first playoff games to Championship.  All divisions with 6 teams will send highest seed to finals after first round, with the 2 remaining teams playing on friday for a trip to the Championships.  All 8 team divisions ( boys int and jr)will have second round games on friday, with winners going to Saturdays Championship games.  Saturdays game times will be 5:00, 6:00, 7:00, and 8:00.

Coaches:  The rain and vacations/all stars has left some teams short players. Please be aware that if you are winning by more than 12 pts, that you cannot continue to press and should minimize pull your defense back, stop fast breaks and 3 pt shots.   Thanks

We can use your help in the concession stand if you have time.  If you want to help just stop by.   The concession stand revenues help pay for the league expenses. Please stop by and have a snack and help us keep the registration fees down.

There have been a lot of people spotted chewing gum on the courts.  The NO GUM rule applies to all Players, Coaches, Spectators, referees, etc.  Please help us keep the courts clean by throwing your gum in the trash cans.  Thanks for your help.

Due to all the rain we have had, the grass parking lot is very wet and soft.  We will close it tonight if it does not seem firm enough to park on.  Please be aware that parking will be limited and if you have to park on the side roads, do not block any driveways.  We are not responsible for any parking violations or towed cars.

The new playground will be closed during the season due to our concern for the safety of the younger children.  We cannot watch that area and the there is too much traffic to be safe.  Parents are asked to not let there kids go up there.  The playground will be roped off.

Porto Potties are located at the back of the lower parking lot behind the red storage building.

Please remember: NO GUM, No Glass Bottles,  No chairs inside the courts,No Smoking, and No dropping off kids at the top of the lower parking lot.  Please cheer for your players, but do not make offensive remarks to other players or the Referees.  We strickly enforce these rules.

We look forward to another fun season of Basketball, so come and enjoy the games and have a snack at the concession stand.  We are planning a 3 on 3 tournament later in the season and have a camp for 7-10 year olds July 6-10.  Look for details here and at the concession stand.

The courts are ready to go.  We all need to give the court crew a big THANK YOU for doing a great job getting the courts looking so good.  His crew  did their usual awesome job.

Schedules are now available. Click on the left side on "Schedules and Rules"

Schedule Update:  There is a mistake on the boys prep schedule:  Game on is on Court A, Game 2 is on Court B and Game 3 is on Court C for the entire season.  A corrected schedule is now available.

Also please note that all games on July 22 and July 23 (the last wednesday and thursday of the season) will be the first round of the playoffs.  Ignore any games listed in these boxes on the schedules as the regular season standings will determine the games and times.

MISC NOTES:

Coaches:  Please set the example for your players and parents:  Refrain from talking or arguing with the referees.  Don't allow players to talk back or complain to referees.  Sit players who are upset to allow them to cool off and not get a technical foul.  Don't chew gum on the court.  Make sure ALL players get EQUAL playing time.  Involve all players in the game.  Don't run up the score if the other team is not playing well ( no fast breaks and back off on pressure defense).

Parents and Spectators:   Talking back to the referees is not allowed.  It distracts from the game and sets a bad example for the kids.  Please refrain from negative comments or you will be asked to leave the courts.

RULES UPDATE:  In the event of an overtime, the clock will be set to 2 minutes and will run on the refs whistle.  There is only 1 time out allowed in overtime, no carryover of timeouts  from regulation.  All foul shots are 2 shot penalty, no 1 and 1 penalties.

Intentional Grabbing or touching the rims or backboards is not allowed.  Any player caught will not be allowed to play in the next game.  This includes during or after games.

During the season we will have members of the Most Precious Blood Knights of Columbus cooking hot dogs and Hamburgers for us.  They are looking for new  members, so if you are interested, stop by the grill and talk to the guys.

Thanks for your help!!
