MSPSP PREMIER 1 CHAMPIONS!!!
Congratulations to the MESA Blitz 99, MSPSP Premier 1 Champions for the Fall 2015 season!! The team went undefeated this season in the top division of the Michigan State Premier Program U17 girls, finishing with 8 wins and 1 draw, 23 goals forward and only 8 allowed. What an amazing and exciting season, right down to the last moment! Their goal since they began playing in premier at U13 was to advance to Premier 1, the highest division of the Michigan State Premier Program, but winning the division exceeded all expectations. This is the third MSPSP championship for the Blitz and their 9th league win overall. The team also had a tournament win and advanced to the State Cup round of 16 this season, Congratulations Blitz!
U16 MESA BLITZ ADVANCE TO 2015 STATE CUP QUARTER FINALS
The MESA Blitz finished the State Cup preliminary round with a 2-0-1 record. The girls won their first game against Carpathia 2-1 on goals by Jessica Riley(Marissa Woods) and Casey Allessie(Tori Tripp). Next they faced the Gators SC and defeated them 1-0 on a goal by Mackenzie Rappuhn(Casey Allessie). The final game of the preliminary round ended in a 2-2 tie against the MI Jaguars 99 Green MRL team on Sunday September 21st. The only way the Blitz could advance to the next round was a win or a tie in this final game and they definitely came to play! The Blitz took the early lead, scoring off a corner kick in the first half Olivia Kirk(Tori Tripp). Game was 1-0 until the Blitz gave up an unfortunate PK in the box near the end of the first half, to tie the game up. The teams went into halftime with a 1-1 tie, where it remained until midway through the second half when the Jags put a cross in behind the defense and knocked one in. The girls did not let the momentum swing and continued to win the ball in the back and the midfield to create offensive opportunites. That perserverance paid off when center mid Marissa Woods carried one through the midfield and placed a perfect shot just under the cross bar. The keeper got a hand on it, but couldn't keep it clear of the net. The defense was stellar all game and keeper Alyssa Burnash made 11 saves, despite the wet conditions, to keep the Blitz in the game. The Blitz will join 6 MRL teams and one ECNL team in the quarter finals, where they face off against the current number one team in the state. They left it all on the pitch on Sunday, what a great team accomplishment, Awesome Job Blitz!!!!!

The weather looked threatening to start the tournament and so did the Panthers as they went on to dominate in Petoskey. They finished by posting a perfect 5-0 record with 3 shutouts and scoring 27 goals to just 2 against in the tourney. This marks the Panthers 36th tournament championship. The Panthers outmatched their competition as they were able to move the ball with great speed on the beautifully manicured fields of Petoskey. As the weather cleared on Sunday, the Panthers stood alone at the top of the U18 Division.

Panthers Champs at St. Clair Shores Waterfront Invitational
The MESA Panthers were happy to share in the spotlight of the MESA Soccer Club's resounding success at the St. Clair Shores Waterfront Invitational. The Panthers claimed the U19 Championship by beating the LCSC Meteors MRL team from Livonia, MI 3 goals to 2 to take the prize. The Panthers found themselves down by a goal twice in the match at 1-0 and then in the second half at 2-1. The Panthers fought back to tie it, then took the lead at 3-2 with 10 minutes to go in the game. The Panthers out-possessed and out-shot the Meteors, but the Meteors with limited chances made the most of their opportunities by proficiently scoring 2 goals in just 5 shots. Panther, Alyssa Burke, put the team on her back and carried them to victory. Alyssa scored both of the come from behind tying goals that made the Panthers chance at winning possible. Her play in the game, and over the weekend, was "lights out" fantastic. The winning goal for the Panthers was scored by Katelyn Wilkowski and assisted by Jessie Magalski. The Panthers next challenge will be in Grand Rapids at the highly touted Crew Cup.

Magic Dominate the Waterfront Invitational

Panthers Win KISS Invitational
The MESA Panthers blazed their way through the competition at the KISS College Showcase in Kalamazoo. They were placed in the top division of the tournament against some of the most talented teams in the Midwest. The tournament started with a 2-0 victory over the Chicago Blast from Illinois. Game two saw the Panthers shutout Midwest United from Illinois 3-0. This victory got the team out of the preliminary pool and into the championship round against the other pool winners. This set up the match between the Panthers and last year’s winner at this event, the Windy City Pride 45 out of Chicago. The Pride came into the game ranked 5th in the state of Illinois. Their latest testament to their success was a semi-finalist showing at the WAGS tournament in Maryland, which is a Premier Elite event. The Panthers controlled the field, out-possessing and attacking the Pride from the start. Spectators and coaches witnessed a blistering pace, with dynamic play and great skill from both teams. The Panthers went into halftime with a 1-0 lead and put another one in the net in the second half to make it 2-0. The Pride’s best chance came on a failed free kick that hit the cross-bar, but this would be as close as they would get as the Panther’s limited the Pride’s scoring chances and continued to put offensive pressure throughout the match. Many say it was the most enjoyable and intense game by the Panthers they have seen in a long time.
In the final game, against the Palatine Celtics from Illinois, the Panthers had 5 different scorers out of the 6 goals that were scored. Goals from Leah Johnson, Jessie Malgalski, Katelyn Wilkowski, Allison Cialkoszewski and Alayna Hilgendorf, paved the way to a 6-1 victory and the championship. They also had considerable help from their two guest players, Claire Stoddard and Madeline Maxwell. Their roles solidified the lineup during the long grueling weekend.
The Panthers ended the tournament with an amazing 13 goals for and only 1 goal against for a goal differential of +12 in just 4 games. The offense was dominant and the defense incredible. This was the Panther’s 34th tournament championship and 354th victory.
This was the first tournament with some of the Panther’s new teammates from tryouts and they fit right in and performed exceptionally. Both Alayna Hilgendorf and Katelyn Wilkowski scored timely goals during the weekend. New keeper Kyra Harrison was spectacular in net with 3 shutouts in 4 games. We welcome them all to the Panther family.

MESA Panthers Perfect in Lansing
The girls U17 MESA Panthers recently went undefeated at the Michigan Indoor College Showcase in Lansing. They had convincing victories over Livonia Soccer Club, TNT Dynamite 96 Red and TNT Dynamite 97 Red. The Panthers showcased their skills in front of over 17 different colleges that attended the event. This marks the end of the Panthers 10th season together with their 33rd tournament championship and their 350th win. With this end, it also marks the first time we will have to say goodbye to some of the Panthers due to graduation. Two players, Maddi Carper and Becca Turvene will be moving on to college next year. Maddi will be attending and playing soccer for Northwood University in the fall and Becca will be attending Oakland University. Both players are irreplaceable and will surely be missed; both for what they have contributed on and off the field during their time with the team. We wish them both the best. If you are interested in joining next year's U18 MESA Panthers showcase team, we will be looking for field players and a goalkeeper.
Contact Mark Burke at 810-240-8922 for more information.

MESA PANTHERS UNDEFEATED IN COLLEGE SHOWCASE TOURNAMENTS
Panthers Undefeated in Indy
The Panther were victorious in all three of their games at the Indianapolis College showcase. Their first game was against Midwest United from Illinois, where they took care of business with a 3-0 win. Their second game was against the Hoosiers FC Elite Wolves, who are the current State Cup Semi-finalists and ranked 4th in Indiana. The Panthers fell behind early 1-0, but stormed back with 3 unanswered goals. Their third game was against 7th ranked Panathinaikos from Missouri. The Panthers were down 2-0 shortly into the second half, but once again proved their resilience as they fired off three second half goals to claim victory 3-2. College coaches from Indiana, Ohio and Michigan were there to watch the Panthers over the two day tournament. The Panthers next event will be a showcase in Fort Wayne Indiana.
Panthers Stellar at Michigan FC Fall Showcase
The Panthers vaulted themselves to the top of their division once again. With 3 more victories in as many tries they went undefeated at the Michigan FC Fall College Showcase. Their first game was against a familiar foe the Bloomfield Force. The Panthers shutout the Force with a Friday night 2-0 victory.
In game two the Panthers put on a clinic against a very skilled Rockford team. The Panthers dominated in what many say was their finest performance of the year with a 5-0 whitewashing.
The third game had an international flair to it against an upstart team from Toronto. The Canadians got on the board first putting the Panthers down a goal in the early going. The Panthers fired right back tying the score then pulling ahead for good. The explosiveness of the Panthers were just too much as the final tally ended in a 6-3 score.
Coach Burke loved the girls speed of play and their great execution dazzled the college coaches and observers. With scoring from 6 different Panthers in the games it showed how well rounded the team is with so many having the ability to contribute to the offense. The defense was strong as well giving up just 3 goals the whole tourney. The Panthers ended the event with the highest goal differential of any team with a +10 rating.

Volunteer Coaches Needed!
MESA is a 100% volunteer organization. The number of teams and age divisions we offer each season is entirely based on our volunteer coaching staff. MESA caters to parents that enjoy coaching their child's recreational team, but want to coach in a more competive environment and give their child the opportunity to excel in the sport. If your child is ready to move to the next level, but you want to continue to be involved in coaching, MESA could be your solution. We develop coaches, players and teams in a supportive environment, where the goal is to develop players- not make a profit. Our coaches have advanced from recreational coaches to USSF E and D Licensed coaches, developed Premier, State Cup and MRL teams and many now earn extra income as paid trainers for MESA and other local soccer clubs. The edge our coaches give to the game and their players is their personal investment in the team. If you are interested in becoming a MESA coach, send an email to firstname.lastname@example.org or contact Brian Riley at (810) 908-1112.

Garth McClellan, 18, and Laurence Paterson, 16, grads of the Davison MESA travel soccer club, have been selected to join the prestigious United States Soccer Federation Development Academy. The academy is an elite group of 80 soccer clubs across the country that train and play based on the format used by the professional soccer academies of Europe. Michigan is home to two such clubs, and following a showcase opener in Phoenix, the teams will then play their first regular-season games at the end of February. McClellan will play for Vardar’s academy team. He previously played for the MESA Predators, where he helped the team win back-to-back Michigan Premier league titles. He also was one of the team’s leading scorers under coach Mark Burke.
Paterson also played for the Predators and made 167 appearances for the MESA Rangers ’94 team, where he scored 391 goals. Paterson also picked up an MRL Premier title, helped the squad advance to the Region 11 semifinals and was selected to Michigan’s ODP tournament. Paterson will play in the academy for the Michigan Wolves club, now sponsored by English professional outfit Derby County. — L.P.

Elite soccer takes the game to the next level

DAVISON — Adult Youth soccer organizations give beginning soccer players the tools they need to learn the fundamentals in a non-competitive environment. But what happens to the kids that want to play at the next level in a competitive environment? Area elite soccer programs pick up where the AYSO programs leave off.
In 1999, Dan Zirkle and Dave Bishop formed the Mid-Michigan Elite Soccer Associa-tion (MESA). The club’s mission was to provide a low-cost opportunity for players to increase their skills and knowledge on a more competitive, community-based level.
The success of the program speaks for itself with several MESA players advancing to the premiere level in the MSPSL. The U-12 Panthers are currently ranked eighth in the state, and former U-14 player Christy Burke was the only female selected from Genesee County in 2007 to participate in the Olympic Development Program.
“MESA offers the best of both worlds to competitive soccer players,” said newly elected MESA board of directors chair and U-10 Blitz coach Brian Riley. “We provide all the advantages of the higher-priced clubs, licensed coaches, trainers, tournaments and a competitive league, but at a fraction of the cost of clubs like Genesee Stars Soccer Club and Vardar.”
MESA athletes compete in the Mid-Michigan Youth Soccer League and host games at Gates Elementary during the regular season. Players are from Davison, Goodrich, Lapeer, Linden, Burton and other surrounding communities.
MESA is looking to feed off its successes with the girls’ programs by adding more boys’ teams.
“Marshall Paterson has been the strength of the boys’ program, currently coaching three boys’ teams in the club,” Riley noted. “With Paterson’s teams now in the older age groups, we need to focus on bringing in some younger boys’ teams, and for that we need coaches to put together teams for the boys.”
Immediate plans call for the offering of a U-13 team for the fall and U-13 and U-15 in the spring of 2009. Riley noted that he believes a cooperative program with AYSO will benefit both programs, as he estimates 99 percent of the players in MESA began as AYSO players.
Tryouts for the 2008 fall season begin June 15. Details: Brian Riley 810-908-1112 or visit www.mesablitz.com.

Panthers finish season on a high note
GENESEE COUNTY — The MESA Panther U-13 girls’ soccer team recently finished its season at 7-1-2 in the Michigan State Premier Soccer Program. The team has posted 16 tournament wins in Michigan and the Midwest since 2002 and was among the four finalists in state cup play last year.
“The Panthers are currently one of the top ranked teams in the state and will participate in the State Cup tournament in the spring of 2009,” said coach Mark Burke.
Burke noted that team has played seven of the top teams in the state holding a 4-0-3 record in those games. The Panthers are closing in on 100 tournament wins, just five shy at 95.
“These girls seem to play their best when we play the best,” Burke said. “We are the youngest team with seven girls playing up a year. We are very technical and play smart, but it’s our passion and determination that’s our greatest attribute. You can’t win on talent alone.”
Burke noted Ryan Ford, his assistant and Bob Crowe, the team manager as being instrumental in creating the competitive environment that teaches and challenges the girls.
The team plays indoors at the Ultimate Soccer Complex in Pontiac and trains in Grand Blanc. A goalkeeper and field players are on the short list for the offseason, so anyone interested can contact Burke at 810-240-8922. To keep tabs on the team visit www.MESAPanthers.com.

Little Panthers finish undefeated in state cup soccer competition
The MESA Little Panthers U-12 girls competed in the 2007 preliminary this fall in Saginaw and Farmington Hills. The tournament had many of the top U-12 teams throughout the state.
The Little Panthers won their division and finished with a record of 4-0. They defeated the Genesee Stars, 4-2, and Carpathia of Sterling Heights, 7-0. They then played WAZA East of Rochester.
Goalkeeper Alayna Hilgendorf made a great save with two minutes to preserve a 2-1 victory.
Alyssa Burke scored both goals in the match and the game winner with 10 minutes remaining.
For their final game, they defeated Ann Arbor United, 4-1.
The Panthers, along with the Michigan Gators, Novi Jaguars, and the Alliance Soccer Club of Grand Rapids, were bracket winners and went undefeated in the tournament.
"We are proud to finish among the top, that’s for sure," said coach Mark Burke. "The girls preformed remarkably well on a big stage. The amazing thing about these girls is their willingness to compete at the highest level. We have six girls that are playing up a year and that’s a very tall task. They fight right through it."
Rangers win division title
The spring 2007 season wasn’t a great time to be a player with the MESA Rangers 96 soccer team.
While the 94 boys were winning out-of-state tournaments, and the 95 boys were earning their first league title, MESA’s youngest Rangers team were on the wrong end of a losing season.
Six months later, however, the picture looks a whole lot better. With 11 victories from 12 games, the boys have captured the MMYSL Under-12 Boys White Division championship for the fall season.
Head coach Marshall Paterson said, "We added two new players to the roster and they made a big impact. In addition, our starting goalkeeper Daniel (Wykes) came into the season ready to show everyone that his confidence and courage were back to normal after having broken his wrist last winter."
The boys have already moved on to their indoor season where they hope to sharpen their skills ahead of next spring. Life won’t get any easier, however, as the team’s coaching staff intend to petition the league for a move up to the Red Division, where they can expect to face some of the strongest teams in the area.
MESA Youth selected for Olympic development program
BY MONICA DUFOUR
Staff Writer, The Davison Index
Richfield Township resident Christy Burke loves playing soccer so much she’s hoping to play someday on the Olympic team.
Sunday, Jan. 28, she found out she made the cut for the Olympic Development Program sponsored by the Michigan State Youth Soccer Association.
About 120 girls competed throughout the state of Michigan for the program, Burke was one of about 18 girls who out performed the rest.
"It feels great," she said with a big smile. "It’s a great opportunity to become a better player I’m looking forward to the competition, and meeting players from other states."
The program is a training camp which will take place at the University of Illinois scheduled for Friday, July 13- Monday, July 16.
Christy Burke will play against players on the Michigan Olympic team the first day, then will train with the team for another two.
She’s been playing soccer since she was four years old. "I love it. It’s magical."
Christy Burke plays bottom sweeper, stopper and central midfeild. Her favorite position is stopper. She likes being able to create plays and help defense.
Having a good coach, who happens to be her dad, has been very helpful to her over the years she’s played as a Pink Panther for the Michigan Elite Soccer Association youth traveling team.
"I like it," she said about her father, Mark Burke, being her coach. "It’s a little more of a challenge, because you bring the game home with you and discuss it.I think it makes you a better player."
Having a genuine passion for the sport has also been helpful. She’s also very competitive. "When you love a sport so much, you can really thrive."
She didn’t get selected for the Olympic program for her passion of the sport alone.
"You have to train every week. Every week you want to be better; eventually you excel.
"You have to set a goal, with every step, you get closer to actually achieving it," she said.
"This year will be a training year for Christy," said Mark Burke. "They’re training with girls from 15 different Midwestern states."
Next year, if she’s makes the ODP team’s final roster she’ll make the Michigan Olympic team, which gets her one step closer to her goal.
"I’m proud of her no matter how far she goes," Mark Burke said with a smile. "I just want to make sure at the end of the day she’s happy."
Soccer isn’t just a sport shared between Christy and her dad. Her younger sister, Alyssa, and older brother, Brandon also play the sport.
"It’s fun. I always have someone to play with," she said. "Besides we get to play soccer in the house."
Christy Burke’s drive and determination doesn’t just work on the soccer field, the seventh grader, is taking honors courses.
Math is her favorite subject. Right now, she’s working on ninth grade algebra.
When she’s not training, or cracking a book, she enjoys spending time with her friends going to the mall and going to movies.
"I love comedy and scary movies. ‘Chick flicks,’" crack me up sometimes.
"She loves to shop." her dad added with a chuckle.
Christy also is a member of Holy Family Catholic Church, and volunteers for vacation Bible school.
Mark Burke said Christy has had a couple of sponsors to help her with the costs of the training program. Italia Gardens of Davison and Renewal By Andersen of Detroit. They’re still a few hundred dollars away from their goal, he said. Both father and daughter are grateful for the sponsors.
Burke is also grateful for all of the moral support from the Davison community including her teachers and parents from her team.
For those interested in sponsoring Christy Burke, call 240-8922.
The MESA Pink Panthers celebrate their first place finish at the Midland Invitational, May 12-13. They won two games and tied one to make it to Sunday’s championship game, in which they defeated the CSSC Shadows ’93 in a sudden death overtime on a corner kick by Alexis Nichols, winning 1-0. The team includes (back row) Madison Kobylik, Alexis Nichols, Brittney Groulx, Kelsey Britton, Lauren Hilgendorf, Morgan Clark, Taylor Brannon, Sara Riley, Heather Nicol, (middle) Ashtyn Brannon, Megan Riley, Emily Eaton, Laurah Farah, (front) Nicole Zbiciak and Katy Walker, (not pictured) Christy Burke and Lindsey Weisler. Coaches Neal Kobylik and Brian Riley said they were proud of the teams’ performance.
