Panthers Excel at Novi Jaguar Invitational

The MESA Panthers found themselves in the finals once again in another great tournament showing last weekend. The Panthers started strong and won a highly competitive game against the Michigan Hawks Red team 2-1 for their first game. Game number two was against the Ann Arbor Avalanche. The Panthers prevailed 3-0 against this familiar foe; a team they were victorious against in the MSYSA Friendlies last fall. In game number three the Panthers matched off with the only other remaining undefeated team in the division, 9th ranked, WAZA Royal. The Panthers played some of their best soccer in a 2-0 win that propelled them to the finals. In the finals, the Panthers met up once again with the Michigan Hawks. With the rain coming down and a stiff wind, the Hawks were able to capitalize on a wind aided corner kick that was bent into the goal. The Panthers then struck in the second half, scoring with a great shot, beating the keeper. Time ran out with the score tied 1-1. An overtime ensued without either team able to put one in the net.

A shootout followed the overtime. The Hawks were able to capitalize in the shootout giving them a 4-3 advantage over the Panthers. Parents and coaches from both teams said it was a great game in which it was a shame that either team had to lose. It was a great defensive effort where the Panthers had two shutouts and only gave up two goals throughout the entire tournament in regulation and overtime.

The MESA Panthers had a great run in the 2008 Louisville Cup in Kentucky. The tournament consisted of teams that are ranked among the best in their states. The Panthers defeated the seventh ranked Noblesville and the twelfth ranked Fishers which were both from Indiana. The panthers then played another great opponent in Javanon, the second ranked team in Kentucky. The game was a hard fought match that ended in a draw. The Panthers advanced to the finals where they fell to a familiar foe in the Indy Burn, the second ranked team out of Indianapolis.
"We beat each other in Indiana and it was a dogfight. Today was their day," said coach Mark Burke. "I can’t say enough about our girls. It was the most challenging tournament yet. They competed against great teams and won. We just fell short of winning the cup."

Two Ranked Teams Square off in Soccer Thriller!!
The Little Panthers faced off against the Grand Rapids Crew this past weekend at the March CMU Soccerfest. The Grand Rapids Crew brought in an impressive team currently ranked 4th in the state of Michigan. It was a hard fought battle where the Crew was able to build up a 2-0 half time lead. The Panthers made it 2-1 shortly after half when the Panthers were able to capitalize with a goal after a tripping call. The Crew stormed right back making the score 3-1. The Panthers then took control, scoring 3 straight unanswered goals making the score 4-3 Panthers. The Panthers were 37 seconds away from the win when the Crew was able to put the equalizer in the net securing them a 4-4 tie. It was a very exciting game where the Panthers played hard and nearly won despite playing with a decimated squad due to illness and injury. Many of the players had to step up and play tough in key positions they are not accustomed to.
The little panthers, who are currently ranked 10th, got a taste of what it was like to meet up against another ranked foe. The little Panthers had a successful tournament with additional victories coming over CA United Black 6-0 and Alliance FC 7-0.

Little Panthers Make Finals at Fishers Halloween Soccer Classic

Allison Takes Shot vs. Evansville

The little Panthers had a very successful weekend under some unfavorable circumstances at the Fishers Halloween Classic in Fishers Indiana.

The Little Panthers won their first Three games to advance to the finals. Their first victory was against Livonia United from Michigan and were victorious by a score of 3-0. Their second game was against Carmel United Premier and they came out on top 2 - 0. The third game which earned them a trip to the finals was against Evansville Elite. Evansville gave them a tough battle and the winner would go to the finals. The Little Panthers tied up the score after a 1 - 0 and 2 - 1 Evansville lead. The Little Panthers then they put the game away scoring a late goal making the final score Little Panthers 3 Evansville 2

The field conditions were horrible with ankle twisting clumps of grass and uneven ground that  made it impossible for even the simplest ground pass to lay flat on the ground. This took away much of the possession stlye of play that they are so accustomed to. The 30 mile an hour wind did not help either.

They met the winner of the other bracket, The Fishers Lightning in the finals. They dominated play and took a 2 - 0 lead with only five minutes left in the game. The opposing team came back to score a late goal, then was credited for a controversial goal as time ran out that was said to have never crossed the line.

Overtime was played to a scoreless match and a shootout ensued. with a 2 -2 deadlock. They gave it a valiant effort, but lost in the shootout 4 goals to 3. The team was disappointed, but they did get nice runner-up trophies to take home.
