October 17, 2009 -- Minor's Division-Town Park, Merrick, NY

On the north field, a tense 0-0 thriller through 5 innings between the Yankees and the Reds in the tightly contested Minors 7 year old division went the Yankees way in the sixth when Matt Pelcher evaded a tag at home on Brandon Borrelli's bases-loaded infield single. Borrelli's clutch hit was followed by Eric Porfido's game breaking grand slam, producing a 5-0 final.

Ben Kovel, Logan Koester, and Matt Pelcher combined for the shut out. The teams meet again for the rubber game of their series in the opening round of the playoffs.

The Pirates won the division with an equally tense 7-6 walk off win over the Blue Jays in their final regular season game at Town Park South. The Pirates face a rematch with Blue Jays in the opening round of the playoffs.

The winners are set to meet in the World Series on Halloween.

October 11, 2009 - Yankees host Mets AL DIVISION.

.

In what turned out to be the final game of the season, the American League Yankees hosted the Mets.  The Mets were out for revenge for their opening day loss to their cross-town rivals.  This was going to be a hard fought, nail biter.  Both teams were fighting for bragging rights and locking up third place in the division standings.
.
The Yankees sent out their flame throwing southpaw Ace, Brandon Rothstein.  Rothstein throws peas and has a virtually unhittable change up.
.
The hard hitting Mets scored one in the top of the first when Cooper Slavin got a one out single.  He was driven in two batters later when clean-up batter Jason Gerand blasted a clutch RBI double.  Rothstein limited the damage to just one.
.
The Mets sent out Old Reliable John Timony, whose fastball clocks in at about 65 and this is complimented by a circle change that fools batters right out of their cleats. In the first, Timony struck out two giving up only a hard hit single by Big Poppy, William Alexander.
.
Rothstein set down the Mets in order in the second throwing only eight pitches and striking out two doing so!!! The Yankees quickly took an early lead in the second when Austin Young started a rally with a one out single.  He was advanced to second when Thomas Kilada followed with another single. Andrew Hernandez then followed with an RBI single driving in Young from second. William Kilada showed a great eye by walking on a very close pitch, loading the bases.  Anthony Molinari gave the Yankees a 2-1 lead with a sacrifice fly to left.  It could have been more but Matthew Rappaport made a great catch in leftfield. 2-1 Yankees after 2.
.
The Mets AJ Taldi lead off the third with a walk and was advanced to third when the lead-off batter Vincent Maltese roped a single up the middle. After a fielder's choice, a walk and stolen base, the Mets had tied the game, and had second and third with two outs.  This brought up clean-up batter Jason Gerand who doubled his first time up.  The Yankees wanted no part of Gerand so they intentionally walked him.  What the Yankees failed to do is look in the Mets on-deck circle where The Babe, Andrew Greenberg was looming.  Greenberg took offense to the walk and promptly answered with a two-RBI single down the right field line.  It was Greenberg's best revenge.  The Mets were not done, they got another run when Matthew Rappaport showed that he not only can flash the leather, he can use the stick.  He drove in the Mets fourth run of the inning by stroking a single up the middle.
.
Vincent Maltese, the Mets middle reliever held the Yankees scoreless in the third, striking out one and giving up only a two-out single to William Kilada who then stole second.  He was, however, cut down attempting a delayed steal of third. Unbelievable heads-up play by the Mets backstop, Jordan Gerand.  5-2 Mets after 3.
.
The Mets Ryan Jacoby started of the top of the fourth with a rope single to the outfield.  However, he was stranded at first when Yankees middle reliever Kevin Yohe buckled down and retired the next three Mets in order, including two strikeouts.
.
The Yankees started to mount a comeback when Andrew Hernandez got his second of his three hits on the day.  He moved to second when William Kilada got a clutch two out single.  This brought up Yankees lead off batter Anthony Molinari who got his second RBI of the day blasting a single to the outfield scoring Hernandez. 5-3 Mets after 4.
.
The Mets busted the game open in the fifth when Cooper Slavin opened up with a walk. Slavin promptly stole second. Timony pushed Slavin to third with a single. Jason Gerand earned his reputation by belting an RBI single scoring Slavin.  The Mets then executed a double steal giving them second and third with nobody out.  The Babe, Andrew Greenberg got his third RBI of the day hitting a sacrifice fly to deep left field scoring Timony.  Gerand came around to score as the relentless Mets got another RBI double by Matthew Rappaport.
.
Vincent Maltese got the Yanks to go scoreless in the fifth, striking out one and giving up only a hard hit smash single by Big Poppy William Alexander, his second hit of the day. 8-3 Mets after 5.
.
The Mets AJ Taldi lead off the top of the sixth with a rope single to the outfield.  Taldi showed his blazing speed swiping second and third.  However, he was left stranded there when Yankees closer Austin Young held the Mets hitless the rest of the way, not allowing a run.
.
The Mets brought in their closer Cooper Slavin in the sixth.  Slavin slammed the door on the Yankees allowing no runs on just one base hit, giving the Mets at 8-3 victory.

Oct 4, 2009  AL Division GAME

Mother Nature once again wreaked havoc on the perpetual pond of Old Mill School and if it wasn't for the hard work of the managers and the Mets' third base coach, the game between the Rays and Mets never would have been played.  However, the game went off without a hitch.

As the fans were filling the stands, The Rays sent out their ace right hander Booby Stokel.  Bobby is a flame thrower with an excellent change-up.  He was greeted by Vincent Maltese, the Mets leadoff batter who promptly roped a triple to start off the game.  Shortly thereafter, Maltese was driven in by a hard hit single by John Timony.  Timony advanced to third as Andrew Greenberg blasted a double.  The Mets literally stole a run when they executed a double steal of third and home.  So, the Mets took a 2-0 lead into the bottom of the first.
.
The hard hitting Rays came back to score two to tie it in the bottom of the first when Bobby Stokel lead off with a hard hit single.  Joseph Wisniewski walked giving the Rays first and second with one out.  This brought up Jared Gott who showed why he was their clean-up hitter because he roped a bases clearing double scoring two.  Tie ball game 2-2 after one.
.
The Mets hitters came with their bats today as Justin Orenstein started off the second with a single.  He was moved to second with another rope by Jordan Gerand. Then, with two on and two outs, Ryan Jacoby came up and got a huge clutch basehit scoring Orenstein from second.  After Gerand and Jacoby stole third and second, Vincent Maltese got his second consecutive basehit driving in Gerand from third.
.
John Timony struck out all three in the bottom of the second maintaining the Mets 4-2 lead after 2.
.
The Mets tacked on another run in the top of the third when John Timony got his second hit of the day.  He promptly stole second and third and was driven in by the Mets Matthew Rappaport who laced a single to the outfield.  In the bottom of the third, the never say die Rays mounted a comeback when Oscar Matos lead off with a walk and stole second base. Matos was driven in when Bobby Stokel blasted his second hit in as many at bats.  Then Bobby showed his blazing speed by stealing second.  After a couple of walks to Chris Capozzi and Joseph Wisniewski, the Rays had the bases juiced for Kyle Tucker who was up for the task and got a two out RBI single scoring Stokel.  Mets hurler Vincent Maltese limited the damage by striking out the next two Rays.
.
The Mets went quietly in the fourth with some economical pitching by Chris Capozzi inducing one strikeout and two groundballs to the human vacuum cleaner at shortstop, Bobby Stokel.  In the bottom of the fourth the Rays tied it up as Stokel was hit by a pitch with two outs, stole second and stole third and stole home. Very exciting! 5-5 after 4.
The Mets were not done.  They started to bust the game wide open in the top of the fifth when Vincent Maltese got his third single in as many attempts. After stealing second and third, he came around to score as John Timony belted a hard hit single, matching Maltese's three for three.  Timony was driven in as Mets cleanup hitter Jason Gerand blasted a clutch two-out triple.  This was followed up by a clutch RBI single by Andrew Greenberg.  The Mets took an 8-5 lead to the bottom of the fifth.  Jason Gerand showed that he could do more than hit when he struck out all three Rays he faced in the bottom of the fifth.  8-5 after 5.
.
The Mets tacked on an insurance run in the top of the sixth when Jordan Gerand roped a single to the outfield.  He was moved to second when AJ Taldi showed great discipline at the plate walking.  This brought up hard hitting Ryan Jacoby who belted his second hit of the day, an RBI double scoring Gerand from second.  The Mets closer Cooper Slavin shut down the Rays in the bottom of the sixth, striking out two giving the Mets a 9-5 victory.

Highlights Sept 22- Sept 30, 2009

Sat. Sept 26th:

.At the halfway point of the fall season, the AL Pirates were hosting the Mets who were right behind them in the standings.  So the winner of this game will take sole possession of third place with first place on their mind.

.
The Mets quickly jumped out to a 3 - 0 lead in the first when Cooper Slavin walked with one out, John Timony advanced him to second with a single roped up the middle.  This brought up clean-up hitter Jason Gerand.  Jason promptly cleared the bases blasting a two run triple to deep left center field.  Shortly thereafter, he scored as the hits just kept on coming when AJ Taldi smashed a double to almost the same spot.
.
As the Mets took the field, they sent out "Old Reliable" John Timony who sat down the Pirates in order for the first two innings.  So the Mets went into the top of the third with a 3 - 0 lead.  This was not enough for the solid hitting Mets.  Cooper Slavin started the top of the frame by belting a lead off triple.  He came in to score when John Timony got his second single in two at bats.  Timony then showed his speed by stealing second, third and home giving the Mets a 5 - 0 lead.  Matthew Rappaport started another rally by lacing a single to the outfield.  He stole second and came around to score when Jordan Gerand hit a screaming line drive single for an RBI.  The Mets took a 6 - 0 lead into the third.
.
John Timony displayed his golden arm by shutting out the Pirates through three innings giving up one hit, a hard hit single by Ben Vitale.  Timony struck out 6 or the 9 batters he faced, not allowing a ball to be hit out of the infield.
.
The Mets tacked on a run in the top of the 4th when Justin Orenstein lead off the inning with a single.  He moved to second when Cooper Slavin surprised everybody by laying down a beautiful bunt.  The Mets didn't need anymore hits because Orenstein proceeded to steal third and home giving the Mets a 7-0 lead.
.
The Pirates were not fighting for third place because they were going to just lay down.  In the bottom of the fourth they started to chip away.  Kyle Pilotti lead off with a walk and he went to second as Austin Weiner ripped a single to the outfield.  This gave the Pirates first and second with nobody out. The speed of the Pirates helped them "steal" two runs as Pilotti and Weiner stole third and home cutting the Met lead to 7-2.  Jason Gerand limited the damage by striking out two in the frame.
.
After the Mets went down quietly in the top of the 5th, the Pirates came out strong in the bottom half.  Ben Vitale got his second hit of the game leading off the inning with another single.  He then stole second base bringing up Jared Horowitz who showed a great eye by walking.  They both advanced by stealing second and third.  Kevin Connolly drove in a run with a hard hit fielder's choice cutting the lead to 7-4.  It could have been more, but first baseman Jason Gerand squashed the Pirates threat by getting an unassisted double play to end the fifth robbing a sure RBI hit by Noah Wekselblatt.
.
The Mets put the game away by tacking on three more in the top of the sixth.  Justin Orenstein got his second hit of the day with a lead off single.  He advanced to second when John Timony got his third hit of the game, another hard hit single.  Jason Gerand got on via Catcher's Interference.  Matthew Rappaport got another RBI by blasting a single for another Met multiple hit game.
.
The Mets closer Cooper Slavin got the Pirates to go down quietly in the sixth allowing only a hard hit single by Paul Christopher.  Final score 10 - 4.  This gave the Mets their second win in their last three games.
.
Pitching stars for the Pirates were Paul Christopher, Austin Weiner and Kyle Pilotti.  Pitching stars for the Mets were John Timony, Jason Gerand and Cooper Slavin.  Defensive star for the Mets was Jordan Gerand when he caught all six innings.

TUESDAY SEPTEMBER 22  AL METS HOST CARDINALS
It was a clean, crisp night in September on Birch 7 where the American League Mets hosted the Cardinals.  The Cards were known for their power pitchers and power bats and the Mets were known to be solid pitchers and pesky little hitters.  The Mets sent out their Ace John Timony who is never far off the plate with his blazing fastball.  He got into a little trouble in the first when Frankie Bruno led off the game with a single and came around to score on a bomb of a double by Robert Backus.  Timony was helped out when Jordan Gerand made an unbelievable running catch in rightfield to rob Jake Gallitto of an RBI hit.  Timony limited the damage to one run.
.
.In the bottom of the first, those Mets bats came alive when the Mets sent 11 men to the plate scoring 5 runs highlighted by an RBI double by John Timony and an RBI single by Justin Orenstein.  The Mets aggressiveness on the bases was instrumental in their first inning outburst.
.
The Mets scored 2 more in the bottom of the second when John Timony got his second RBI double and he eventually came around to score after stealing third and home.
.

.
The pitching stars for the Cards were Robert Backus, Robert Oliver, Frankie Bruno and Jake Gallitto.
The Mets were able to come away with a 9-1 victory for their second win in their last three games.

FALL 2009 HIGHLIGHTS Sept 9th thru Sept 20th 2009

Sunday, Sept 13th:

It was a cool and breezy Sunday afternoon.  The rain made it's way out, however, it left its mark on the fields.  A special thanks to a MNMLL director and his son working the fields early Sunday for making Lakeside 6 as playable as it was.

.

The winless American Division Mets were looking for their first win in three tries.  They sent their Ace John Timony out to face the offensive powerhouse Dodgers.  Timony was brilliant holding the Dodgers to two hits and two runs in three innings while throwing a very efficient 38 pitches.  John struck out five.  The two hits were back to back triples swatted in almost the same spot, deep into right center field by Nicholas Saladino and Max Goodman.
.
The Mets, not to be outdone scored two runs in the first showing amazing discipline at the plate.  The table setters AJ Taldi and Cooper Slavin came around to score.  Call up James Demirakos scored the third run for the Mets after he showed great patience walking to open up the second inning.  The Mets hurler John Timony helped his own cause by walking, stealing second, third and home giving the Mets a 4-2 lead going into the third.
.
After Timony struck out the side in the top of the frame, Merrick's own version of Babe Ruth, Andrew Greenberg blasted a leadoff double down the right field line.  He came around to score on an RBI single by Matthew Rappaport giving the Mets a 5-2 lead after three.  It could have been more but Eric Saladino robbed James Demirakos' screaming line drive to the hot corner.
.
The Dodgers wouldn't be held down for long they scored a run in the top of the fourth after Anthony Santagata lead off with a walk and proceeded to steal second, third and home closing the lead to 5-3.  The Mets started a rally in the bottom of the fourth only to be thwarted by an outstanding play by Matthew Advocate gunning down a Met runner at second.
.
The Dodgers inched closer in the top of the fifth when Matthew Garber blasted a line drive single to left to lead off the fifth .  He came around to score after some very aggressive base running.  The Mets went quietly in the fifth.
So going into the sixth the Dodgers were down by one.  Hunter Scheinkopf ended up scoring the tying run after he was issued a one out walk, was singled over by Jack Pugliano and doubled in by the Big Bopper Nick Vicino.  The Dodger fans were on their feet screaming.  They fought all the way back from a three run deficit to tie it in the sixth.
However, the Mets were not going to go down without a fight.  Ryan Jacoby led off the bottom of the sixth being hit by a pitch.  He was moved into scoring position when James Demirakos was issued a walk.  AJ Taldi inched everybody closer when he was issued a free pass loading the bases for Cooper Slavin.  Cooper worked out his fourth walk of the day forcing in game winning run!!!
.
It was a hard fought game by both sides.  The pitching stars for the Dodgers were Nick Vicino, Jack Pugliano and Nicholas Saladino.  The strong arms for the Mets were John Timony, Jason Gerand and Cooper Slavin.

SEPT 9, 2009:

What a night for baseball.  The International Division Twins faced off against the Cubs in a hard fought pitchers duel.  Vincent Wilson pitched the first two innings for the Twins striking out 6 but Alex Rogers was up to the task striking out 3 over three innings.  During the first two innings both teams had outstanding fielding led by Steven Scheel and Michael O’Brien of the Twins and Jordan Paladino of the Cubs.  The bats for both teams then came alive in the third and fourth innings where all of the runs were scored.  The Cubs had key hits by Alex Rogers, Ben Cohen, Dylan Moehringer, and a bases clearing triple by Dylan Wolfson in the top of the third to go ahead 4 to 1.  In the bottom of the third the Twins tied the score with solid hits by Zachary Duren, Cameron Scaduto, Kyle Munson, Matt Levine, Justin Garofalo, and Louis Goldstein.  With darkness approaching the Cubs got up in the top of the fifth and were shut down by the pitching of Matthew Levine who struck out 5 in two innings.  In the bottom of the fifth the Twins had a man on third with two outs and Matt Levine coming to the plate.  The Cubs manager, playing the odds, intentionally walked Matt Levine to get to the next batter James Demirakos.  On his 9th birthday, James Demirakos came through with a two out 2 RBI double to win the game for the Twins.  Great game played by both teams.

PLAYOFF AND WORLD SERIES HIGHLIGHTS SPRING 2009

AA World Series:

.

Wednesday afternoon June 17, was the MNMLL AA World Series game on the Town Park North field. It was a great game that lasted 7 innings. Well played by both teams, it was a shame someone had to lose. It pitted the regular season, second place Pirates, vs the fourth place, Yankees.

After player introductions, and good luck handshake between the teams, the starting pitcher for the Pirates, Josh Kaplan, took the mound.  After fielding a comebacker to the mound, for the first out, the Yankee offense took off. The next four batters got on base, highlighted by William Alexander, smoking an opposite field double down the right field line to drive in two runs. One more hit gave the Yankees a 3-0 lead after the top of the first.

Kevin Yohe, starting for the Yankees, put the first two runners on base. But then pitched brilliantly, shutting down the next three Pirate batters in order.  Kaplan settled down the next two innings, pitching well, giving up no more runs, to keep his team in the game. Kevin Yohe too, pitched well over the next two innings, and when both starting pitchers left after three innings, the score was still 3-0.

In the top of the fourth, the Pirates brought in Mike Kavanaugh as their next pitcher. In his first inning of work, he retired three tough Yankee batters in order. For the Yankees, their ace pitcher Anthony Molinari came in. The Pirates bats came alive, as they scored 3 runs, tying up the game after four complete innings.  Mike Kavanaugh kept rolling along, facing only six batters over the next two innings. Molinari settled down, going through the Pirate lineup quickly as well. After six well played innings the score was tied at 3-3. Both teams would be going into their first extra inning game of the year.  Jason Gerand came in to pitch for the Pirates, and after giving up a one out walk to Christian Vignola, retired the next two batters.

In the bottom of the 7th, Ben Carmichael led off with an infield single, and advanced to second on an overthrow of first base. Then Logan Strobing, the Pirates number nine hitter came to the plate. After Ben stole third base,  Logan  lined a single down the left field line, past a drawn in infield, to drive in Carmichael to end the game, and give the Pirates 4-3 win and the Championship.   Great plays along the way for the Pirates, such as two catches of third tip strikes by catcher Jordan Gerand, and a leaping grab of a line drive by first baseman Jordan Kappel helped the Pirates secure the victory. The Pirates showed a “never say die” attitude, winning all three playoff games in their last at bat. What a way to end a great and fun season. Congrats to all.

Wednesday, June 17th, 2009 Farm World Series:

The Farm Division's Dodgers and Red Sox met in the World Series at Birch 7 on Wednesday, June 17th. The game pitted two highly talented teams which will surely be remembered as a classic. In the first two innings, the Dodgers Matt Pelcher and the Red Sox Josh Trook took the mound and struck out six batters each. Pelcher showed his toughness after being drilled in the back during a first inning at bat and overcoming the pain to pitch a solid second. In the third inning, Logan Koester took the hill for the Dodgers and made the first of his two game saving plays. On a single by Matt Liotta, the Red Sox attempted to score their baserunner from first base. Koester took the throw on a perfectly executed relay from John Carroll and tagged out the runner before he could reach home. In the fourth, the Red Sox's Josh Trook led off the inning with a triple. The next Red Sox batter, hit a comebacker to the mound which Koester fielded and alertly tagged out the runner attempting to score, negating the Red Sox rally. In the bottom of the fourth, Koester delivered a one out single. Two batters later, Brenden Rosario was hit by a pitch, giving the Dodgers two baserunners with two outs. Josh Rodriguez stepped up to the plate, and on an 0-2 fastball roped a double into right field scoring Koester. The trail runner was tagged out at homeplate. The score was now 1-0. This was all of the run support that the Dodgers would need, because their closer, John "Mo" Carroll was ready to shut the door. John turned up the heat and struck out all six batters that he faced, securing the World Series championship for the Dodgers. This was truly a battle. The Dodgers would like to congratulate the Red Sox on a great season.

Saturday, June 13th, 2009:

It was a hard fought game at Birch 8 where the A Division Yankees squared off against the Phillies.  In the top of the first the Yankees managed to get two men on base with timely hits by Matthew Travis and Vincent Wilson but pitcher Marco Travaligone closed the door not allowing any runs.  In the bottom of the first inning the Phillies scored one run led by a key hit by JC Pitti.  Marco Travaligone then came to the plate and crushed a line drive to center field which was a sure hit if not for the great catch by call-up Matthew Pelcher.  Nicholas Whiteman was able to pitch out of a bases loaded jam only giving up one run.  The game remained 1-0 until the bottom of the second when the Phillies again rallied with key hits by call-ups Ben Kovel and James Kennedy which began another Phillies rally.  A timely triple by Marco Travaligone scored 2 runs which put the Phillies on top 3-0.  The Yankee bats came alive in the third inning scoring 8 runs beginning with keen eyes by Danny Stewart and Steven Scheel followed by hits by James Hampton and call-ups Matt Pelcher, Dylan Radtke, and Matt Liotta.  The never say die Phillies added 1 run in the third and 2 runs in the fourth making the game 8-6.  In the top of the fifth inning Matt Levine shut the door on the Yankees.  Then in the bottom of the fifth inning the Phillies again rallied scoring 2 runs to tie the game at 8 off a bases clearing triple by Matt Levine.  Going into the top of the sixth tied 8-8 the Yankees started a rally with base hits by James Molinaro and Vinny Wilson and a sacrifice by Matthew Travis followed by a triple by Nicholas Whiteman scoring 2 runs to put the Yankees on top 10-8.  In the bottom of the sixth inning Vincent Wilson sealed the Yankees victory with three strikeouts.  There were no Louis Castillo’s on either team today.  Great game played by both teams.

Thursday, May 14
Highlights May 11 thru May 31, 2009

Saturday, May 30th:

The AAA Reds beat the Yankees 15-8.  Winning pitcher Alec Deane tossed 3
1/3 innings, facing 17 batters without yielding a single walk.  Robert
Backus and Mark Cerenzia each threw 2/3 of an inning, and Dylan
Hawxhurst recorded the final out.  But the story of the day was the
offense, led by Daniel Arkow, who was 4-for-4 with 2 runs scored and 3
RBIs, and Backus, who cracked 2 doubles and drove in 4 runs. Deane and
Mikey Multer each scored 3 runs, while Cerenzia and Eric Rooney scored 2
runs each.  Koner Drexler and Dylan Hawxhurst each reached twice and
scored a run, and each of them made a big catch in CF to help keep the
Yanks in check. Underlying their success was the patience of the Reds'
hitters, who worked out 13 walks to go with their 8 hits and make up for
being outhit by the Yankees.
The Yankees' offense was led by Justin Katz, Mickey Cianfrone (2B),
Stephen Dobre and Steven Molinaro (2B, 3B), who each reached twice,
Joseph Condello (2B), who reached 3 times, and Dylan Hughes, who had a
double and a sac fly.
===============================================================================

Thursday, May 28th:

On a damp night, through a fairly steady drizzle, the AAA Reds outlasted the Rangers 6-5 despite being outhit 8-2. Mud filled the players cleats and good pitchers found it difficult to spot their pitches due to the wet baseballs. But the Reds gutted it out behind the pitching of Alec Deane (2 IP, 1 ER, 3K) and the game's top star -- winning pitcher Brandon Byrns -- who pitched 3 innings, striking out 7 while holding off a potent Rangers line-up. Offensively, the Reds were led by Daniel Arkow, whose 2-run smash single plated the Reds' first 2 runs. Arkow later walked and scored the Reds' third run. Michael Falco reached 3 times and did a great job behind the plate framing pitches and holding on to a foul tip to strike out the Rangers' #5 hitter to help quell a Ranger rally. Eric Rooney laid down a masterpiece of a bunt that unfortunately went foul by inches, but he managed to work out a walk that ignited the game winning rally and he scored the tying run. Deane scored 2 runs, including the game winner.

Most of the big hits, however, came off the bats of the Rangers. Despite the heavy baseball, Ryan Livingston hit a booming triple and Jimmy Haran crushed a huge RBI double. Josh Levine singled twice and scored 2 runs as did Jack Roberts. Zach Sodano had an RBI single and struck out the only batter he faced on 4 pitches.

 ========================================================================

Thursday, May 21nd:

The AAA Reds beat a tough Mets team 8-3 with good pitching, timely hitting, and solid defense. Robert Backus (1 2/3 IP, 0 H, 2 BB, 0 ER, 4 K), Alec Deane (2 2/3 IP, 0 H, 1 BB, 1 ER, 4 K, W), and Michael Falco (1 2/3 IP, 1 H, 2 BB, 1 ER, 2 K) combined to hold a potent Mets lineup in check. The Reds' hitting was led by Daniel Arkow (2-for-3, 3 RBIs). Deane and Backus each had 2 hits and scored 2 runs. Brandon Byrns started the go-ahead rally and scored a run. Falco had 2 hits and was robbed of an extra-base hit by the Mets' Shane Sanders, who ran down the ball in deep left center.

Sunday, May 17th:.

The AAA Reds beat the Dodgers 13-3 with a 9-hit attack and solid pitching from Robert Backus (2 1/3 IP, 0 H, 0 ER, 7 K) and Alec Deane (2 2/3 IP, 2 H, 1 ER, 4 K), in spite of some great Dodger defense. The Big Red Machine's potent offense was led by Dylan Hawxhurst, who smashed two doubles and stole home, Backus, who had 3 hits, scored 3 runs, and drove in 2, James Whiteman, who scored 3 runs and drove in 3, and Daniel Arkow, who drove in 2 and scored once. Hawxhurst could have had even more when he hit a monster shot that was pulled in by the Dodgers' Nick Saladino. Mikey Multer provided the spark for the Reds, opening their attack with a sharp single and scoring 2 runs. Michael Falco scored twice and did a great job behind the plate handling the pitchers, and Deane hit a shot to RF but was robbed of an extra-base hit by a great catch by the Dodgers' Kenny Petter.

Eric Rooney smashed a line shot that was snared by the Dodgers' SS Sean Negron. Other Dodger defensive highlights included catcher Elijah Maduro cutting down a runner trying to steal home, Jared Gott snaring a liner off the bat of Multer, and Negron doubling off a runner following his great play.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Farm Cubs defeated the Yankees in a rain soaked thriller that came down to the last inning.  For the Cubs, Jake Edwards had a double and an RBI and Sean Rosenholtz pitched two fantastic innings.  Peter Sarantakos chipped in with two hits and an RBI.  In the last inning the Yanks loaded the bases for Ben Kovel who lined a double up the middle.  One run scored before Sean Rosenholtz made a great throw from centerfield to Harris Joslin to make the put out at the plate to end the game.  Very exciting ending!!!  Great effort by all the kids considering the weather and that both clubs were shorthanded.

Josh Small pitched a hitless inning, and Anthony Cafiso added a scoreless

inning.

Opening Week Highlights- Spring 2009

Opening Week Highlights- Spring 2009

April 7th:

On another cold, blustery April evening, the A division Reds and Phillies faced off in what is destined to be a classic. Phillies ace Matt Levine and Reds starter Alex Rogers kept the game scoreless through the first two innings. The Reds played small ball to cobble together a two-run lead in the third, which they held through the fifth inning, when they tacked on two more. Reds pitcher Matthew Kaufman kept the Phils off the board through the fourth. The red-hot Phillies tacked on two runs in the fifth before closer Jack Latham sealed the Reds’ 4-2 win. The game was called after five complete innings due to imminent darkness. The Phillies demonstrated awesome fielding and big hits by Lou Goldstein, Matt Levine, Jay Pitti, Jack Goldstein, Colby Gargiulo and Michael Pokorny with two RBI. The Reds big hitters included Matt Kaufman, Jack Latham, Ben Cohen, Jason Frank and Jordan Paladino.

 .

April 4th:

In Girls Majors, the Cubs defeated the Dodgers 5-4. The Dodgers jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead in the 1st on a 3 run HR to RF by Lauren (LT) Trimarco. The Cubs scored a run in the 2nd as Jessica Wasser singled w/the bases loaded. Sami Mauser pitched into & out of trouble all day while striking out 8. The Dodgers went up 4-1 in the 3rd on back to back doubles by Lauren Segal & LT. The Cubs rallied to tie the score in the 3rd with 3 straight hits by Sami Mauser, Kelly Rasulo & Julia Iacono. Emily Sena drove in the 4th run. Kelly Rasulo's 2nd double of the game in the 4th, drove in the go ahead run. Cora Travaglione started for the Dodgers & struck out 6 in 3 innings. Segal & LT had 2 hits each & Lexi Rivelli was on base twice for the Dodgers. Mauser, Rasulo, Sena, Lauren Grama & Lauren Azmon each reached base twice for the Cubs.

 .

The weather was more like football or hockey weather rather than baseball weather.  With whipping winds the A division Reds met up against the Yankees at Lakeside 5.  Despite the cold, windy weather both teams came ready to play.  The Reds played excellent defense and got great hits, especially off the bat of Alex Rogers who hit a line shot to left center field.  If not for the outstanding catch by Jim Jim Hannon who then doubled the runner off of second base it would have been an easy triple for Alex.  The     Yankee bats were hot with key hits by Andre Wagner, Matthew Travis, Nicholas Whiteman, James Molinaro, and Jim Jim Hannon beating out three infield hits.  Steven Scheel and James Hampton both had fielder’s choices helping to keep the Yankees rally going.  For the second game in a row the Yankees got excellent pitching from Nicholas Whiteman, Danny Stewart, Matthew Travis, Vincent Wilson, and Patrick Kraemer.  Great game by both teams braving the elements. .

.

April 2nd:

It was a damp and dreary night for the Rays VS Yankees A Division season opener. Both teams came ready to play.  The Yankees got stellar pitching from Vincent Wilson, Danny Stewart, Nicholas Whiteman, and Patrick Kraemer holding the Rays scoreless until the top of the fifth inning.  With the bases loaded, two outs, and the Rays threatening to score James Turco popped the ball foul on the third baseline.  The Yankees catcher Steven “Jorge” Scheel made a diving catch falling face down in the dirt and managed to hold onto the ball stopping the Rays rally.  Great defensive plays by Yankees James Hampton, Patrick Kraemer, and Matthew Travis helped the keep the Rays in check.  Keen eyes at bat by James Molinaro and Andre Wagner helped to start the Yankees rally.  Special thanks to call up John Carroll who helped us out with great defensive plays in the field.

April 1st:

 .

On a cold and drizzly season opener at Lakeside 6, the Farm division Dodgers defeated the Mets 4-0. Even though the weather was not ideal, both teams were eager to start the season. The Dodger pitchers combined for 15 strikeouts, Matt Pelcher (6), Logan Koester (6), John Carroll (3); over five innings and did not allow a hit. Offensively, Matt Pelcher had two hits and John Carroll, Logan Koester (1 RBI), Sam Vitale, Josh Rodriguez (2 RBI’s), Brenden Rosario & Eric Porfido (1RBI) each had one hit. The Mets pitchers, Andrew Crowley, Dante DiMarco and Dylan Radtke held the Dodgers scoreless until the fourth inning, when the Dodgers scored all four of their runs. Good luck to both teams for the remainder of the 2009 Spring season.

 .

After a well pitched game by both clubs on a damp dreary season opener,  the Farm Division Cubs won  a nail-biter over the Red Sox 4-3.  Harris Joslin and Jake Edwards pitched two strong innings a piece to lead the Cubs.  Harris Joslin also had a hit and the  game winning RBI.  Jack Koch made a great play at shortstop to get the lead runner at second killing a 3rd inning two out Red Sox rally. Sean Rosenholtz, Peter Sarantakos, Andrew Razza and Giacomo Lacorte all scored runs for the Cubs. In the top of the sixth,  the Red Sox fought back from a 3-0 deficit to tie the game on a three run home run by Joshua Trook before the Cubs pulled it out in the bottom of the inning on a Harris Joslin bases loaded walk.  Good game by both teams.

2008 INTERNATIONAL LEAGUE WORLD SERIES - METS HOST THE A'S
Well it all came down to this.  The rain finally stopped, the wind finally died down.  Two teams coming off stunning, yet vastly different victories the day before.  The Mets handily beat the Yankees 18 -3.  While the A's came back from an 8-2 deficit in the 5th inning by scoring 9 runs overtaking the #1 seed Dodgers, winning 11-8.
.
It was a beautiful, sunny day, at what was a surprisingly dry, well-manicured field at Town Park South for the 2008 FALL INTERNATIONAL LEAGUE WORLD SERIES.    The crowd came pouring in.  Some were carrying yellow and green balloons while others adorned blue and orange.  Friends and family came, some from as far away as New Jersey.  It was standing room only to watch these two well-trained teams go head to head.
.
The Mets manager Lenny Kaplan along with his two coaches, Frank Bruno and Joe Maltese were prepared to host the A's lead by Manager Dave Slavin and his two coaches Glenn Greenberg and Anthony Vicino.  You could cut the tension with a knife.  The fans were screaming.  The players were nervous.  However, this is what they play the entire season for.  They play for a chance to be called World Series Champion.
.
The Mets sent out their ace Frankie Bruno to face the top of the A's order.  Vincent Cacciatore started the inning by blasting a hard single.  He was moved to second when Justin Orenstein belted a line drive base hit of his own.  The first run of the World Series scored when Cooper Slavin singled to right scoring Cacciatore.  Justin Orenstein promptly stole third on the next pitch.  Then, the Big Bopper Nick Vicino came through in the clutch again, ripping a two run triple, scoring Orenstein and Slavin.  The A's scored the fourth run of the inning when Shon Kehati roped a single to center, scoring Vicino.
.
The Mets showed why they were the second seed in the league by coming right back scoring a run in the bottom half of the frame.  Frankie Bruno started the rally by roping a double.  Jason Gerand and Vincent Maltese walked showing great discipline at the plate, loading the bases.  Anthony Luchs was then hit by a pitch forcing in Bruno.
.
The Mets pitching stepped it up holding the A's scoreless for the next five frames.  Josh Kaplan, Vincent Maltese and Ian Kranis were virtually unhittable the rest of the way allowing just one hit to the A's Frankie Karp.
However, the Mets zeroes were matched by the A's hurlers Nick Vicino, Shon Kehati and Cooper Slavin.   Of note, was a sparkling defensive gem by Gabe Eckstein in the third inning when he made a running catch in right centerfield preventing at least one run.
.
It was the bottom of the last inning when the powerhouse Mets' bats started to come alive.  Josh Kaplan started the bottom of the sixth inning with a single to left.  Ian Kranis moved him to second with a solid base hit.  Cooper Slavin made a sparkling defensive play on a pop up between home and third for the first out of the inning.  Jason Gerand cut the A's lead in half to 4-2 scoring Kaplan from second on a frozen rope single.  The next batter struck out.  This made it first and third and two outs with the winning run at the plate.  This brought up hard hitting Anthony Luchs who crushed a ball to left center field.  It dropped in but there was A's left centerfielder Vincent Cacciatore who sprinted in, short hopped the ball and fired a strike to second baseman Justin Orenstein who stretched as far as he could while keeping his foot on the base for the final out of the World Series!  It was an incredible ending to an amazing game.

Saturday, October 18 - Athletics host Rays
.
There was a chill in the air, talk of Halloween and Presidential elections and that can only mean one thing - PLAYOFF BASEBALL!!!  It was a brisk but beautiful Saturday afternoon at Chatterton where the third place A's hosted the fourth place Rays in the quarter finals of the International League.
.
The A's sent out their ace, left-hander Nick Vicino and the Rays countered with their ace southpaw Brandon Rothstein.  Nick shut down the powerful Rays offense in the first two innings.  The A's jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead in the first when Justin Orenstein and Cooper Slavin walked and they both came around to score on a hard hit double by the Big Bopper, Nick Vicino.  In the second, The A's Frankie Karp started a rally by walking and he came around to score on one of the hardest hit doubles of the year by Kevin Connolly.  Kevin came around to score two batters later when Vincent Cacciatore blasted an RBI double.  In the third, the A's widened the lead to 6-0 showing excellent discipline at the plate.
.
However, as expected the hard hitting Rays came back with a vengeance.  Brandon Rothstein started the 4th inning by belting a solo homerun, making it 6-1.  The Rays cut the lead to 6-3 when Raphael Palladino, Kyle Pilotti, Austin Weiner and Kevin Sala strung together four solid base hits.  Those Rays simply would not go down without a fight.
.
The A's, not to be outdone, came back in the bottom of the fourth and put the game out of reach for good.  Jesse Eplan, Timothy Joyce and Vincent Cacciatore started the rally by walking.  Cooper Slavin kept the line moving with a hard hit infield RBI single.  This brought up, "The Babe".   Andrew Greenberg, in front of his parents and grandparents, blasted a long grand slam homerun.  It was an A-Bomb by A-Green!!!!  Gabe Eckstein added to the hit parade with a smashing base hit of his own.  The game ended the next inning when Kevin Connolly smashed an RBI triple scoring Shon Kehati from first.
.
The pitching stars for the Rays were Brandon Rothstein, Raphael Palladino, Austin Weiner, Noah Tepper and Kevin Sala.  The hurlers for the A's were Nick Vicino, Shon Kehati and Gabe Eckstein.  Of note, Shon Kehati threw just 37 pitches in three scoreless innings.
.
It was a hard fought game by both sides.  The A's now face the Dodgers to see who makes it to the World Series.
