MANSFIELD, CT (June 15, 2010) - It took one extra inning to finally settle the Major League Championship as top seeded Hawthorne Tree Care defeated No. 2 seed The Burns Real Estate Group, 3-2, in an instant-classic Tuesday night in front of a large enthusiastic crowd that gathered at Southeast Field A.

Hawthorne Tree Care’s Anthony Stigler and The Burns Real Estate Group’s Marcus Fry locked horns in a classic pitching duel keeping the game scoreless through the first two innings. Fry worked 4 2/3 innings striking out 10 while Stigler struck out four over three innings.

One knew it would be a tight game when in the top of the first inning, with the score 0-0 and only one out, Hawthorne Tree’s Jake Lefevre fielded a routine ball at second base and made the heads up play to throw home instead of first base to find speedy Matt Trudeau trying to put his team up early.  Catcher Zach Ziemba tagged him home at the plate and the instant-classic had begun.

The Burns Real Estate Group later jumped on the scoreboard first pushing across two runs in the third. Hawthorne Tree Care countered with a run in the bottom of the inning on an Anthony Stigler single.

Trailing 2-1 in the bottom of the fifth, Hawthorne Tree Care rallied with two outs as Alex Kravchuk singled and moved to second on a passed ball. After issuing a walk to Jacob Lefevre, Fry faced Stigler in a power matchup. Fry worked two strikes on Stigler before he stroked his second single of the night to right field scoring Kravchuk to tie the game.

Kevin Sheehan took over for Fry and worked out of a tense jam in the bottom of the sixth as right-fielder Jack Krecidlo of the Burns Real Estate Group sent the game to extra innings with a dramatic two-out catch as Hawthorne Tree Care left the bases loaded.

Hard throwing Luke Hawthorne of Hawthorne Tree Care worked three scoreless innings in relief of Stigler while Burns Real Estate’s Kevin Sheehan was steady in relief of Fry keeping Hawthorne Tree at bay until Ziemba’s game winning walk-off hit to center in the bottom of the seventh.

Hawthorne Tree Care, managed by Dan Pinion, finishes the season undefeated at 14-0 while The Burns Real Estate Group, managed by John Vampatella, finishes at 11-3.
