ORGANIZATION:
The Starling is a beautiful, black bird often found with an alluring sheen of rainbow colors. The name suggests flight and also symbolizes the “stars” of the first nation-wide, academic/volleyball program for girls whose families have limited financial resources. Starlings Volleyball Clubs, USA is a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt national organization which offers locally-based academic and volleyball programs to girls aged 8-18. Operating on a volunteer basis, the program strives to bring together girls from various ethnic backgrounds in rural and inner-city areas of America. Starlings provides girls the opportunity to train and compete at USA Volleyball’s Junior Olympic level, thereby increasing individual as well as team level of play in high schools which increases players’ access to college athletic scholarships. More important than competing in Junior Olympic Volleyball, the program strives to offer one-on-one tutoring/mentoring and assists all participants to prepare for college entrance or other post-secondary options. Additional educational components address topics of particular importance to young women, including women’s health and nutrition, career exploration, communication and negotiation skills, and critical thinking skills.
