Sunday, June 11 Ken Cole, Ray Gremillion, Dale Ketelsen, and Wayne Schmidt inducted into Louisiana Chapter Over Two-hndred and twenty-five wrestling fans witnessed the induction of Ken Cole, Ray Gremillion, Dale Ketelsen, and Wayne Schmidt to the Louisiana Chapter of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame. The fact that the the Louisiana Chapter inducted two members post mortem certainly made this year's ceremony a bittersweet event. This year could have been called founding fathers night. If Br. Melchior Polowy was the father of Louisiana Wrestling, Ken Cole was the father of Cajun Wrestling. A transplant from the north, Cole worked in the trenches to initiate programs and one of the finest tournaments in the state. Ray Gremillion is one of the few men who can state that he won a team state championship as a coach and individual. Gremillion teams at East Jefferson(1966) and Bonnabel (1988) won state Championships. Dale Ketelsen was the first wrestling coach at LSU. As a collegiate wrestler at Iowa State University, he finished second at 157 pounds in the NCAA championships. While at Bel Air High School, six wrestlers won individual State Championships under his tutelage. Wayne Schmidt was the founder of the Greater New Orleans Referee's Association. He guided the association through it's turbulent initial years and became a mentor to almost every referee currently officiating today. Next year's induxtees will include Mike Garvey, Cliff Strider, and Br, Melchior Polowy. Anyone wishihg to make nominations can download the application from the National Wrestling Hall of Fame and forward it to the local or national organization. |
